No embryo at 7 weeks?

Hello,

I went for an internal scan today and the gestational sac is 16.3 mm, but no embryo was seen. I had a check last week, and the sac has grown since then.

I'm definitely over the 7 week mark, as the last time I DTD was more than 5 weeks ago, and my cycle is regular, and pregnancy test was positive slightly early.

Has anyone else had this and it had a positive outcome?

I've had no nausea or morning sickness or anything.

Hi lovely, I'm so sorry that you're going through this. I exactly the same thing in my last pregnancy and was diagnosed with a blighted ovum. If your dates are correct then you should definitely see an embryo by now, what has your EPAU said? Happy to chat if you need someone to talk to and sending love x

@clhsgirl Thanks for your reply, I'm sorry you've gone through this too.

I live in Japan, so there's no EPAU - I've not been told much tbh, just to go back in a couple of weeks for another scan.

I've looked up about it, and my own diagnosis is also blighted ovum. How long for you before the bleeding started? I want it all over tbh so I can move on, and having some empty sac growing and delaying everything..... It's not great is it 😔

I was in progesterone and passed the sac 4 days after the scan/stopping medication. I am going through another miscarriage now though (with small embryo) and it's been a week since I came off meds and still haven't had any cramping or clots. Having gone through this a second time, I would recommend having some intervention if you're not on progesterone as for me, I am finding it very hard to move on whilst still carrying the pregnancy. It's horrible and it sucks that we have to go through this.

I should also add that my experience is based off transvaginal scans, it might be different if you've had a transabdominal ultrasound, sorry :(

@clhsgirl

I am so sorry you're going through another miscarriage :( I hope you get your rainbow baby.

Yeah mine was transvaginal too both - bizarrely the first doctor said he saw a yolk sac, while the second one didn't

I'm not taking any medication as this is my first time trying for a child and am not assumed to have any fertility issues

There's been no absolutely bleeding, the reason I became worried was I didn't experience any nausea or vomiting, and particularly for women over 35, that is indicative of a miscarriage - which looks like it is.

I'm feeling a little better, thanks to your replies. :)

@ringsaglitter I’m curious , Why is no nausea or vomiting at over 35 indicative of a miscarriage ??

I was 35 with my daughter very little nausea and felt fine and no vomiting second pregnancy this at 38 mmc at 8wks , felt terrible , awful nausea . Hoping to conceive again and don’t know if should be happy if i feel sick or not

@JJM13

Haha, good question. While it's true that many women (20 to 30%) of women get no morning sickness / nausea, it is proven to be indicative of a healthy pregnancy - particularly with advanced age.

By age 35, women without nausea have a 5 fold increased risk of miscarrying.

I've seen a lot of "I had no morning sickness but not probs" on mumsnet - I'm one of the sad results.

Every pregnancy and mother are different, it's related but not definitive. I've read a lot of stories of women desperate to feel sick while going through long, drawn out miscarriages though, it's heartbreaking

Just to let anyone future reader who wants to know - we often search for people going through the same situation - I did miscarry, with bleeding starting around the start of week 8. No embryo was ever seen - so I guess I blighted ovum.
