Tests that were useful for recurrent early pregnancy losses

Hi,

I had an early pregnancy loss at week 5, in Feb and in May. I am looking for advice on tests that would be useful to do. I am sure doctors will help me out, but I am worried I'll miss an important test. Could anyone recommend a list of tests? So far, we have a detailed scan, semen analysis, thyroid/prolactin tests booked, but I'm yet to meet my main gynecologist who in sure will recommend recurrent miscarriage profile (so a whole bunch of tests). Anything else that I should do? I saw here lots of people talking about progesterone and aspirin, how do you come to know that is what you need?

Many thanks

I should mention that I already have 2 year old. Not sure if I got unlucky or something else with the losses this year. I just don't want to try again without doing some investigations first.

What age are you? I did extensive testing after 3 miscarriages and came away with nothing. But mine were later on. My OB said he wouldn't test if they were all chemicals as that's usually just bad luck with the sperm and embryo mixing and dividing.

I got tested after 2 early losses, and was diagnosed with anti phospholipid syndrome. Next pregnancy I injected blood thinners daily, low dose aspirin and progesterone til 12 weeks, and was successful.

But I also know friends who had 2 m/c, no tests, and also went on to have successful pregnancies, so it may be nothing.

Good luck though

I had an appointment yesterday after 2 early miscarriages. I had a scan back in April when I miscarried and the Consultant went through my scans with me (womb, ovaries etc). All appeared normal. She also did a ream of blood tests and will ring me next week with results. I got a prescription for progesterone to take as soon as I fall pregnant again (if I do). I will then be brought in at 6 weeks for a scan and bloods etc. The results of my blood tests from yesterday will decide whether or not I will be given aspirin. There's absolutely no guarantees but I told her to throw the kitchen sink at me as I'd rather try it all even if it is just down to pure luck.

Thank you so much for the replies.

I had my appointment today and have thyroid/prolactin/blood clot tests booked as well as pelvic exam and semen analysis.

Really wasn't comfortable with the consultant today. He seemed rushed and just didn't pay a lot of attention or dismissive. When I mentioned progesterone, he said he would only advise to take from week 12 or maybe 8?! He said why sustain or prolong a pregnancy that wasn't meant to be (chromosomal etc.) So confusing. He also advised aspirin, but after tests. It's all so confusing, I might get a different consultant

I'm 36. I had my son at 34, no issues. I'm hoping it is just bad luck, but obviously want to avoid another loss and do my best.

TTC is not a fun time

Sorry your consultant didn't make you at ease. There is a risk with progesterone that you would end up prolonging a pregnancy that isn't viable (e.g. chromosomal issue) - this is why my consultant has advised a scan at 6 weeks, 9 weeks and 12 weeks.

Progesterone wouldn't be recommended before a scan to be sure it isn't ectopic as well as reasons mentioned above.

Aspirin thins the blood so can help if the problem is related to thick or "sticky" blood. Obviously you wouldn't know that without having some tests around it.

These clever people can forget to bother explaining why, so frustrating for you as the patient. Best of luck x

After a late miscarriage at 21 weeks and another at 7 weeks I went to The Recurrent Miscarriage Clinic, who prescribed me Progesterone and aspirin from the start of pregnancy - up to 28 & 37 weeks. It was found that I had antinuclear antibodies after my late miscarriage and now 23 weeks pregnant with twins. Good luck xx

Ah so progesterone is usually from week 6?

Not having great sleep with the toddler, so I'm also getting easily lost 😀

I think I'll skip this cycle for TTC until I figure out what the issue might be. I have all my tests next week and will hopefully find out the week after.

I have started acupuncture today as well, absolutely exhausted, it had a big effect on me, my whole body feels heavy even though probably less than 10 needles were used.

I'm taking now coq10, acai, maca, well woman and folic acid. The acupuncturist said dhea and omega 3 are also good. And folic acid 800 mg
