MVA experience 2023

I wanted to share my experience of an MVA I had today as it gave me some comfort reading people's experiences before I went for the procedure.

I've previously had two chemicals, and with this pregnancy I got to my 7 week scan to find out the baby had stopped growing at 6 weeks. I waited 2 more weeks just to be entirely sure and to see if I miscarried naturally.

At 9 weeks I opted for the MVA over d&c as I had read it is less evasive, it was quicker to get booked for the MVA at my local hospital.

2 days before the procedure, they took my bloods.

On the day of the procedure, I had to have x2 tablets orally 1 hr prior to procedure and 1 pessary inserted into my rectum. I was spotting blood by the time I got to the hospital for my procedure.

I was taken into the surgery room about 40 mins late, but the nurses and consultant were really nice. The consultant initially did a ultrasound scan to check everything, then she inserted something into my cervix which I found really uncomfortable and painful and kept tensing up. Took deep breaths to calm down and eventually she was able to apply local anaesthetic to numb the area, at this point I became quite emotional. I had kept it in as I had already knew 2 weeks before that there was no hope and thought I had accepted it but the pain, discomfort and the overwhelming feeling, I ended up crying and sobbing for the rest of the procedure.

They offered me gas and air which I've never had before, and it really really helped. I was out of it for the rest of the procedure, everything was fuzzy and slow mo and then within what felt like minutes it was over.

She did one last ultra sound to check she got everything out, she said it looked fine. I didn't feel too much pain once I got dressed just sore down there. 30 minutes later after checking my BP I was allowed to leave.

I've been spotting since I got home but seems to be subsiding.

All the best to anyone that has to go through any of the options for a miscarriage

Hi,
I’m so sorry you had to go through all of that. It really is so tough. I had an MVA too in February this year. It was my first pregnancy and we found out at an 11 week private scan that our baby had died at 9 weeks. I cried pretty much the whole day we found out. Then got admitted to hospital the following day where they tried medical management twice but that didn’t work so I had to have the MVA. I found the physical recovery from the MVA not too bad, bled lightly for 2-3 weeks. The emotional recovery is taking me a bit longer. Hope you are feeling as ok as you can be today & have a good support network around you. Try to be kind to yourself. It helped me feel less alone reading others’ stories on Mumsnet too. X

Thank you so much and for your kind words, I hope you are healing, I am just trying to move on now and try again once my cycle restarts, so difficult waiting :(

I can relate to the impatience of wanting your cycle to return. A week can feel like forever. Hopefully yours will come back soon. Take care. X

Hi there, I had the MVA about 10 days ago and it was really unpleasant for me and had a lot of bleeding after. The bleeding began to taper off and turn to brown blood and then today its started up again with fresh blood. Hoping it's normal and dies down again quickly. I too want my cycle to get back to normal and try again. This is my 2nd MMC in a row, had a MC in Sept last year where I had medical management which was equally rubbish!

@M301990 @BexKate @Nelly245 sorry to jump on this thread. I had a MVA this afternoon after a month of no luck miscarrying naturally or medically. I just wanted to ask has anybody managed to conceive again or how long did it take to get your periods back? X

Hi

I'm sorry to hear you are going through this :(

My story doesn't get any better, after my MVA, we immediately tried and the 2 cycles after this, both times I fell pregnant. First was a chemical. The one after has turned out to be an ectopic :( still waiting for my levels to go down as the levels are so low and going down I am letting it happen naturally. (Being monitored weekly)

So technically I haven't had a proper period in between since my mva only miscarriage bleeds.

But I ovulated less than 2 weeks after my MVA. I do wish I waited for 1 period in order to allow my body to reset which is what I am going to do now once this ectopic is over.

But please do what feels best for you as I've heard other people have successful pregnancies after their miscarriages.

Really sore you're going through this. I had a period about 5 weeks after the MVA - so that will have been beginning of May. I then fell pregnant in July but had a chemical and have just found out I am pregnant again at 4 weeks so no idea if it'll work out for me yet!

@M301990 , so sorry to hear about your chemical and ectopic! When did you find out it was ectopic?

moosey89 · 24/08/2023 17:49

@Rolo08 I got my period 4 1/2 weeks after surgery, I didn't ovulate before then as I was tracking to see if I did (got a negative test 3 weeks after surgery). This is now my first proper cycle since so hoping it doesn't take too long to get pregnant again but I'd be surprised if it was this cycle, I'm just not that lucky!x

Congratulations on your pregnancy, praying its a sticky one!

So I first tested positive for this ectopic pregnancy on 5th July (about 11dpo)

I started bleeding on 17th July, they scanned me and said they could see fluid but that's it.

Fast forward to 3 weeks later, I'm stil testing strong positive , they did bloods 48 hours apart and it rose from like 200 to 210 instead of going down

They scanned me 1 week later (this was about 5 days ago) and the consultant confirmed its an ectopic but itz very small, they did bloods and saw hcg has gone down to 100 so said we would wait another week to see what bloods are. If it's gone down again then I have to wait for it naturally to go , if it goes up or stays the same then they will offer me the injection

@Rolo08 sorry to hear you’ve gone through this experience too. Hope you are doing ok today.
Hopefully I can give you some optimism as I’m writing this I’m currently 14 weeks pregnant.
I also had a chemical pregnancy after the MVA, seems like it might be a common thing? We tried again before I’d had a period and on reflection that was a mistake.
Sorry for your ectopic and chemical @M301990 . Hope you get some happy news soon. And same for you and sorry for your loss @moosey89. Congratulations on your pregnancy @Nelly245 .

Congratulations! Hope all goes well, did you do anything differently this time?
