MMC - what happens if I pass naturally?

Hi there,

I'm likely experiencing a missed miscarriage. I should be 7.5 weeks but my scan showed a very large yolk sac (8.1mm, i.e. non-viable based on medical research), no fetal pole, and no baby.

The doctor said I could be earlier than I thought, I'm measuring 5.5 weeks. But that's impossible. I've registered a positive pregnancy test for 4 weeks now so those dates don't make sense. Plus the very large yolk sac in itself means it's a no-go having consulted medical friends and done my own research.

Anyway, I've been told to come back in 2 weeks to check if there's been any progress. Between now and then I may naturally miscarry, if I don't I'll likely go down the surgical route.

My question is, if I naturally miscarry what are the early signs? Does it suddenly come on at once? Or is it a gradual thing? I guess I'm just nervous about it happening at work, when I'm taking my daughter swimming, when I'm visiting my grandma in her care home, etc. I feel like I need to carry pads in my handbag and prepare for the worst.

Any advice is much appreciated, feeling nervous about what's to come 💗

I'm very sorry to hear this ❤️ I've passed 2 of my MMCs naturally without intervention and between scans. The first I had on / off brown, stringy spotting for a few days, then started contracting on the 4th day. Everything passed in one go and then I had bleeding for a few days after. The second I had no spotting, just suddenly started contracting and passed a large clot. Heavy bleeding, contractions and then passed the sac a few hours later. Both times I was at home and on and off the toilet.

Its hard to carry on as normal, but definitely have pads with you if you need to go out. I found heat helped with the pain. X

Not sure whether it’s right to tell you a worst case scenario but I found out on a Tuesday I’d had a MMC (had had weird discharge and a couple of small streaks of red blood), booked for the surgical removal on the Friday, then on the Wednesday evening I had very sudden, very heavy bleeding and either clots or tissue, was soaking through pads in much less than an hour, so went to A&E with a letter from the GP and got admitted overnight. The doctor removed some tissue manually using a speculum and then the bleeding slowed right down. They gave me the tablet to get everything else out and I was expecting to pass something I didn’t want to see (though baby had stopped growing at 9 weeks so wouldn’t be very big), but there wasn’t really anything else of note, just blood. They scanned me the next morning and decided all was clear. If the bleeding had started while I was out and about it would have been awful but luckily I was at home and able to get to the toilet. I didn’t have any pain or contraction-type feelings at all, which was weird but a big positive if you can call it that! Sending so much love and support, it’s not a nice thing to be going through at all ❤️

Thank you so much for sharing, I really appreciate it. Would rather know what to expect than have the complete unknown sprung upon me. It's my baby's first birthday this week and we've lots of family visiting, I'm almost hoping nothing progresses so I don't put a spanner in the works.
Sorry for your losses too, it's such a difficult time and so important to look after ourselves.
