Miscarriage experiences - natural, medical or surgery?

Found out yesterday that I had a missed miscarriage. I was 11 weeks but they said it wasn’t measuring past 6 weeks.

I started bleeding on Wednesday, small blobby clots which turned into long stringy clots, but no actual “tissue” as far as I think. The bleeding is on and off, and only when I go to the toilet (nothing in between). No pain or cramping really yet.

I have a 7 month old and I’m scared that the pain and bleeding is going to hit me like a tonne of bricks when I’m home alone with him. For this reason I’m considering medical or surgical treatment so I can plan for someone to look after him while it is done. I couldn’t bear for me to be at home and not be able to look after him because I’m in agony or stuck on the toilet.

if you have experience of either, please let me know. I’m also very keen to get this over and done with - the grief is enough without having to wait for it all to come out:

Thank you

My post birth miscarriage was 100 times easier than my pre birth one. And at a later gestation. I hope for you it will be the same, and as it's already started I wouldn't go for any management.

Although you could get the tablets to speed it up. Was literally an hour or so of proper bleeding for me when it started properly (2nd time)

Hi OP, I started to have a natural miscarriage at 2am this morning after 2 days of spotting but it has been a very unpleasant experience. I should be 12 weeks pregnant but my baby died at 6, had my first scan at 11 weeks pregnant and my EPU wanted to leave 2 weeks inbetween scans to confirm it was a missed miscarriage (supposed to go back on 18th) so I didn’t really have a choice. I had all intentions of choosing surgical management if I had the choice. I ended up bleeding so much that I can’t stand up without almost passing out so now I’m in hospital, and will probably have surgical management if there is any retained tissue. It hasn’t been painful at all for me, this must vary from person to person, but it’s been an awful experience having it naturally

So sorry for your loss. I had a very similar Corrie mcr at 11 weeks but turned out baby only measured 8 and like yours, mine was missed and only when I had the bleeding did I find out.

So my bleeding started on a Thursday midday and confirmation of mc hours later and I had booked a procedure for the Tuesday. Unfortunately nature took its course the next afternoon (luckily after I had got home from work) but it was very intense and there was about 3 hours I was in tremendous pain and was not prepared for the physical aspect either. My husband was around thankfully so tended to the children but if you are on your on the next few days I would consider a procedure. Having said that I know many have had issues even with that so sometimes natural is better.

Either way it is a harrowing experience so be mentally prepared for what's to come and know that better days will come again. I'm 35 weeks pregnant right now writing this so speak from experience.

Sending lots of love X

Hi, I sadly had a MMC confirmed last week at 9+5. I didn’t have any bleeding so went to EPU this morning and opted to try the medical management first. I’m back at home and waiting for it to kick in feeling very nervous. The MMC was confirmed by my fertility clinic but they didn’t give me any information on what would happen next. The EPU were so kind and amazing today so that definitely helped! Wishing you all the best wishes and I am happy to share more detail if want it.

Hey @Buttons86 - sad to see us both here. :(

Mine ended up progressing naturally over the weekend so no need for surgery. It was painful but quick xxxx

sending you lots of love xxx

@LMM91x hope you are looking after yourself and taking the time you need to recover. I don’t think anyone can prepare you for it xx

LMM91x · 16/01/2023 14:42

Same to you @Buttons86 really hope things go as smooth as they can xxx

Hi everyone, thank you for all your heartfelt replies. I really appreciate each and every single one of them.

I had my surgical procedure yesterday and so far, I have absolutely no regrets. I have no pain whatsoever and I know it is all done now so I can move on properly and grieve the loss.

If anyone is in a similar boat, from my experience, I feel this was the best decision for me. The procedure was done under general anaesthetic so I have no recollection of what happened, I woke up feeling very calm, and I’m not in pain.

Lots of love to anyone else going through this x

@amyandezra Glad to hear you’re happy with your decision. Thanks for the update.

As others have said I chose an ERCP as I wanted it to be over as soon as possible. One word of warning though - that does not mean you stop feeling pregnant immediately! I was still testing positive 3 weeks after and had associated nausea, sore boobs etc. I really wasn’t prepared for that!
