gynaecological tests after miscarriage

Does anyone know where I can have a gynaecological checkup?? My GP is useless- I had a miscarriage last year, & 'things' don't look quite right 'down below'. After my miscarriage I was told that my GP would check me, but he didn't. I changed doctor, but he is useless too. I feel at the end of my tether, cos they refuse to check me physically and I'm getting really worried. They won't refer me to a gynaecologist, so I'll willing to pay privately. Bupa does something called a 'Wellwoman' assessment but this includes a pelvic examination & lots of unrelated tests that I don't need for £220. I was wondering if anyone knew of something similar & appropriate. Thnak you.

can you ask for a referral to a gyne at your local hospital from your GP? Some gps will be incredibly helpful after m/c, others less so (like yours unfortunately)
good luck

If you tell your GP you're willing to pay privately, (I think) they will give you the referral to a gynae with a private practice.

Are you due a smear? Surely they can't be refusing to simply give you a physical? How odd.

Following my M/c the walls of my uterus stuck together. I knew that I was ovulating (have ovulation pain) and I had all the changes in mucus etc, I also had very, very bad period pain each month but no bleed. In the end I went to my gp who tried to fob me off saing it was just me being stressed. I reasoned with him and he agreed that it could be uterine adhesions. He finaly agreed to refer me, but in the end the waiting lists were too long anyway so we paid. I was proved right and in the end I got the treatment I needed (also private as the waiting lists were so long) and I now have two wonderful children.

Push to get a referal to a gynaecologist, pay if you have to and discuss you worries with him/her. It will help you no end to put your mind at rest/get treatment started.

Hugs and good luck

thank you for all ur suggestions, I will ask my GP to refer me to someone private because when it comes to health money is no problem. I kinda get scared & worry that I will never be able to have chidlren. I've noticed that eveyone on these message boards is very honest & shares their (embarassing!) problems with full support...well the reason I want a gyno check up is for two reasons:

  • when I have my periods, as well as blood there is something that I can only describe as red jelly, I have never had this before, only after the miscarriage
  • everything used to be 'neat and tidy' down there, but now it looks like my 'insides' are outside as there is what i can only describe as skin and flesh hanging out...gross I know, but true....

does anyone know what either of these two problems might be??

does ur pratice not do a well woman clinic with the nurse? might be worth a try with her.

By red jelly, do you mean clots? Are they dark red? If so, that's pretty normal. Some women pass clots with every period. I don't know why this would change though.

I don't really understand what you mean by skin and flesh hanging out, I'm afraid. Women normally have two sets of labia, or lips, and there are a wide range of "normal" ways for these to look. If you mean something is hanging out of your vagina, that's a bit more alarming.

A nurse doing a well woman clinic might be the best place to start, as jingleballs suggests.

I don't think I look the same as I did pre-children.......! That's when I've been brave enough to have a look!

I am not sure where are u from but in St Thomas's - London (just by the Hs of Parl.)they do 24h gyno emergency - anything from miscarriage to unusual bleading, pains, etc. I went to Emergency when having a little tiny spotting - 11 weeks pregnant. They did scan despite thinking nothing was wrong. It was a incomplete misc. to their surprise and then they followed up with some more scans and test after my miscarriage. Very sympathetic and kind. I went back 2 months later when pregnant second time, I think I had just "anxiety pains" and they did a scan immediately, only 5w pregnant. They then were doing bloodtests every week to see hormone level rising - to reassure me.Unfortunately you may have to wait 1-3h to be seen, as they will take urgent cases firts, but that only made me feel better. Hope that helps. Try your hospital or any hospital nearby with similar facility.
