Hi all,

For anyone else in this situation of having had a healthy pregnancy followed my miscarriages- how are you feeling? Have you gone for further tests/changed your lifestyle/anything else? Waiting to hear back from the doctor on Tuesday about next steps.

How many miscarriages have you had? How old are you now? Are you with the same person you had the first pregnancy with? There are so many variable unfortunately.

tulipsunday · 06/01/2023 18:37

Two miscarriages in a row (both in first trimester). I am 34. Just was wondering really as looking into some of the additional tests you can go for at private clinics and just don't know whether it is likely or not that there is an underlying issue (have read about blood clotting issues etc.) if I have had a successful pregnancy before with no complications.

Hoping the doctor will run some basic tests to check iron and thyroid. Will be asking them next week.

It’s very tough. Even if you do find underlying issues and take the medication it’s still not guaranteed as I well know! I got all my tests on the NHS and they were very good.

tulipsunday · 06/01/2023 21:18

@Trymein Yes that's the thing isn't it - no guarantees which makes it tough. Sorry it hasn't worked for you 🥲 Just weighing up I guess whether to just get a basic blood test from the GP and hope third time lucky or spend some money investigating further if there is an issue.

@tulipsunday I'm in a similar position, I've had two MMCs following a healthy pregnancy which resulted in my DC. The doctors have said it is down to bad luck but I don't feel I can chance it again so my GP has agreed to run thyroid. anaemia and Vit D tests and I've also booked an appointment with a private clinic. I also plan on taking low dose aspirin next time I get pregnant and seeing if I can get a private prescription for progesterone.

tulipsunday · 07/01/2023 09:16

Thanks @tttc2022 that is useful. Hoping my GP will agree to the same basic blood tests. Guess I then have to decide if I want further ones.

The progesterone issue is confusing me a bit - the EPU said they would only give it if any bleeding. The Tommy's midwife recommended that I have it as I had some internal bleeding (subchorionic haematoma) which could be linked to progesterone. Bit confusing! May get a progesterone test this month and see.

I was in the exact same boat, OP, paid for some blood tests online as I felt I couldn’t chance it again and it turning out to be a simple fix. Tested all my vitamin levels, thyroid, some autoimmune disorders as far as I remember. Everything was fine and I had another healthy pregnancy on the third go!

pizzawinecake · 07/01/2023 10:02

Has your OH been tested? There is a lot of focus on the female after the basic standard male tests.

My OH's standard sperm test was fine but after 2 miscarriages my acupuncturist suggested a dna fragmentation test and we found the issue (it's pretty common). We ended up doing ivf (currently 13 wks) but knowing the problem meant we could tailor it

pizzawinecake · 07/01/2023 10:04

To be clear the dna frag test was for him. For me she also suggested doing a vaginal microbiome test to make sure there were no underlying infections etc

tulipsunday · 07/01/2023 14:36

Thank you that's very helpful @pizzawinecake no we haven't had any tests done as of yet. Congratulations on your pregnancy xx

pizzawinecake · 07/01/2023 14:40

No worries. Seriously though remember it's 50% the man's dna too. I found there is often the presumption it's the woman who has the issue (I guess there is more stuff that could go wrong) so make sure you it's both of you doing tests etc now. Good luck x

Yes very true. Thank you.

I have had three miscarriages this year after three normal pregnancies in the twenties and thirties lm 42 now I lost one at 20 weeks then 7 now this one at 10 weeks it’s soul destroying. Hoping they run tests after l pass this wee baby but they say it Jst sometimes happens but l keep good health and fall quickly it’s awful the not knowing Wots causing this. 😢

TheBirdintheCave · 07/01/2023 23:40

I'm on two mmc now after having a baby with no issues in 2020.

As I'm 36 I don't have time to wait weeks for a GP appointment so I've ordered a thyroid and vitamin levels blood test online just in case it shows anything obvious before we start trying again. We're also going down the IVF pathway on the 30th of Jan so will get more testing done via them and (hopefully) a treatment plan.

I've got lots of progesterone left from my last miscarriage so will take that if we're lucky enough to get pregnant when I next ovulate and I might start baby aspirin too though I'm on the fence about that as I heard it can affect implantation :/

Doremi1689 · 07/01/2023 23:42

Same position. I had a healthy pregnancy with my 3 year old, although 2x weeks before I got pregnant I had a chemical.
we started trying for baby no 2 in May this year, and fell pregnant instantly both times, but miscarried at 10 weeks both times. I had basic blood tests from my gp, vitamin D, thyroid, folic acid, progesterone… all was fine except my vitamin D was slightly low so I now take supplements daily, and progesterone was low but most likely because I got tested a week or 2 after I miscarried. currently on the wait list for the recurrent miscarriage specialist. The doctor said I shouldn’t wait to be seen, and said if I become pregnant again they will prescribe me progesterone pessaries and I will also take baby asprin . It’s so horrible what we’re going through, I hope it works out for you

Doremi1689 · 07/01/2023 23:44

I meant to say “the doctor said we shouldn’t stop trying while on the wait list’

Anoushka1986 · 08/01/2023 00:02

I had a healthy pregnancy in 2020. I then had two miscarriages in 2022. GP did basic tests which showed nothing significant. They said it was likely due to my age but I sometimes think they just say that when they don't know what else it could be . Or maybe it's true. I'm 36.

Im currently 20 weeks pregnant. The main changes I made after the miscarriages were increasing my vitamin D. Aim for optimal levels of 100 rather than just an acceptable level. Also I was previously ovulating on day 19 with a 28 day cycle. My naturopath was concerned that this didn't allow enough time for progesterone to build (short luteal phase). I started taking chaste tree (vitex) and within about two months I started to ovulate on day 14 for a 28 day cycle.

Not sure if it was luck or these changes. Good luck x

TheBirdintheCave · 08/01/2023 08:48

@Anoushka1986 What vitamin d supplement did you start taking?

PoinsettiaPosturing · 08/01/2023 09:18

I had 2 miscarriages, 2 successful pregnancies, 2 MMC, the second of which was genetically tested and was incompatible with life, now successfully pregnant and in 2nd trimester

tulipsunday · 08/01/2023 12:05

Thank you for sharing your experiences. Sorry so many of us have been in this boat.

@TheBirdintheCave the brand I used was an Australian brand so probably not that helpful to you. It was called Bio D by Eagle Clinical. It was more expensive than typical vitamin d and it was recommended by my naturopath over the brand I had been using because it's better absorbed. Definitely noticed a huge difference compared to the previous brand.
