Not allowed to go home after misoprostol?

Has anyone else been told they must stay in as a day patient and potentially overnight when they get misoprostol for a MMC? From reading online, it seems common to be allowed home. I really pushed to be at home for it, in fact I was sobbing at the thought of being 'made' to stay in and having medical staff examining me and what comes out, but they were absolutely adamant that is the policy in my health board. There was no room for discussion at all, despite my obvious distress. It felt like I was just annoying them by questioning it to be totally honest.

It ended up being a moot point because it happened at home before my appointment. But why is this a policy? I was 12 weeks but the pregnancy had stopped growing at 7. Is it just because I was 12 weeks, even though the pregnancy wasn't 12 weeks?

Anyone able to shed any light? It's really playing on my mind.

In September I took Mifepristone on a Friday in EPU and then miscarried on the Sunday about 5-6am at home. I was then at my inpatient appointment on gynae ward to take Misoprostol. They want to see that you've passed everything and the gynecologists checked that with internal ultrasound scans and by looking at any additional clots and blood that had passed in a bedpan. I was home by mid-afternoon, but if it hadn't worked I would have had to stay to have surgical management. I was 10wks, but development stopped about 7wks.

I was given a prescription for Misoprostol to buy and take it at home, never a suggestion of being kept in, haven't known anyone that has had that. They arrange follow up scans to make sure everything is passed, didn't have to stay in for that.

I wonder why it's different for different people? I'm going to have to follow this up with my GP perhaps. Maybe there are factors that affect whether you are allowed it at home, like age, how many weeks etc.

Sorry for your loss. Even though baby wasn’t 12wk, your placenta etc could have kept developing so could have led to heavy blood loss. Other factors include if you’ve previously had a C-section. Hope you’re ok x

The placenta would make sense, thanks for replying. I'm very glad it happened by itself in the end. Sorry to everyone else who has gone through this too.

I was 11 weeks after growth had stopped at 6.5 weeks and after 2 csections so that doesn't really make any sense either.

Oh that is strange then. I'm even more curious now. Like I say, there was no room for discussion and they were really quite blunt. When I said I didn't know if I could face being in hospital, they said I wouldn't get the tablets unless I came in.

I think I'm going to call my GP and ask about this.

That's odd. I was allowed mine at home and that was that. No follow up appointments or scans at all 🤷🏻‍♀️
