Miscarriage/pregnancy loss

4 miscarriages - what next? Please give me some hope!

Hi everyone,
I wanted to reach out to the community as I have had 4 miscarriages in a row and I am losing hope. All of my tests have come back normal and the NHS are saying we just need to keep trying. It's heartbreaking.

I had a private 3D ultrasound and they found I have a subseptate uterus. However, I've been told it isn't bad enough to consider surgery as they don't believe it will make any difference as it is not a full septate.

I am awaiting an appointment at St Mary's Hospital as they will do additional tests that other NHS hospitals don't offer. I'm not sure if they do the NK cell testing there, or if the only NHS hospital is in Coventry? Should I ask for a referral there too?

I feel like I've reached a dead end. It cannot just be 'bad luck' surely, something must be going on? My miscarriages are always around 5 weeks. I had an early scan booked with the Early Pregnancy Unit but I didn't make it that far.

Any advice is welcomed, thank you! :)

Hello @Scampi13

I was in a similar situation to you, 3 miscarriages and every test imaginable all came back absolutely fine. All my pregnancies ended around 5/6 weeks but only got picked up at my 12 week scan.
Have you had your AMH tested? It measures your egg count.
I did end up having ivf in the end because my egg count came back too high which meant the quality of some of my eggs were too low. I did miscarry my first ivf pregnancy but on the second go I took blood thinner injections and low dose aspirin and I really think that made all the difference. Around 5/6 weeks the placenta forms so the thinner your blood the better I believe!
A doctor can prescribe blood thinners for you after 3 miscarriages - I would definitely give it a try.
Good Luck!! X

Sorry you're having to deal with this. I know a few women who have had progesterone prescribed as they had losses like yours and it helps them. Could you speak to your doctor about this?

Hi lovely. I am in the same position as you. Still trying for our first and just had my 4th MC. The Coventry clinic is a private section of the NHS as such. They are researching implantation issues. I have just self referred there, they offer tests quite a bit cheaper than private clinics in London. The consultation and biopsy is just under £1k. Try giving them a call, they were so helpful ☺️ 024 7696 7528.

By now you should have been referred to your local recurrent miscarriage unit and been offered all the blood clotting/lupus tests etc and genetic testing from you and your partner to see if you're carriers. Also thyroid health, general bloods etc.

It's so hard to know where to turn next, as I am in the same position. I was on progesterone only for my last pregnancy, that didn't make a difference. My 3rd was a chromosome issue so if it was the same again sadly nothing will stop that. I'm just struggling with the Russian roulette of pregnancy.
Sending hugs xx

I had the same comments re my eggs at a scan a few months ago and have now just had my third MC. Did you do ivf privately?

@Scampi13 your situation sounds very similar to mine. I’ve been pregnant four times since June. The first one was a chemical and the last 3 ended around 5 weeks. I just found out I’m having the 4th one. I’ve had done tests done privately at st Mary’s and was put on aspirin and heparin this time but evidently it has not made a difference😔

Hey, I hope everything worked out for you. Can I ask how long your septum was? I’ve had 2 miscarriages and just found out I have a subseptate uterus too, it’s 1.3cm long. Given that it’s only small, the specialist can’t tell me whether it’s definitely the cause of my miscarriages so I’m not sure whether to have surgery

Hello! I don’t know the size of my septum, but last week I had a hysteroscopy and uterine septum removal + biopsy and coil fitted for 6 weeks.

The doctor strongly recommended the hysteroscopy to see what was going on and remove the septum. He did warn me they sometimes perform the procedure and find the scans are wrong and there’s no septum present, however I did have one and he removed it. To aid healing I’ve had to have a coil fitted for 6 weeks to reduce the chance of scarring. Then we can start trying again.

It was done under general anaesthetic and very efficient. Recovery has actually been a lot more painful than I expected, and I’m really bloated and swollen. Although I haven’t bled very much - just spotting every now and again. I felt like I had hit a brick wall and this was my only option left. The doctor said success rates are very good after uterine septum removal. Fingers crossed it works and this time next year we have a little bundle of joy! 🤞

My advice is do the hysteroscopy - if they find no septum you’ve lost nothing and the surgeon will just take a biopsy instead. If they find a septum they can remove it. It will give you peace of mind and is another thing to tick off the list to help narrow down an underlying cause. If I was taken seriously I would have had the surgery a few years ago. But multiple doctors just fobbed me off saying it wasn’t an issue and to keep trying. Until my 4th miscarriage and I asked my GP to refer me to a new hospital and saw a different doctor who had a completely different opinion - which was so refreshing and a relief that finally someone could offer some hope instead of the usual response ‘your bloods are normal and there’s nothing more we can do, just keep trying’ etc.

Anyway, I hope my message is somewhat helpful and good luck! 😊
