Recurrent miscarriage - HSG

Hi, I've had 2 missed miscarriages and 2 chemical pregnancies in the past 3 years. I've been to an NHS miscarriage clinic as well as to a private clinic specialising in recurrent miscarriage (CRP clinic; which I've been going to for the past year and a half for treatment). We were about to give up, but while on a trip to South Africa, decided to see another specialist here. They suggested an HSG x-ray, which has shown that I have a misshapen uterus and they believe this has caused my miscarriages. I wasn't ever offered this test, by any of the doctors I've seen.
PLEASE, if you're struggling with this issue, ask your doctor for this procedure. It will help them to see if there is anything structurally wrong, whether there is scarring and will flush your fallopian tubes (if needed). I wish I'd known to ask, so I'm hoping to spread the word. It might not give you the answers you're looking for, but I feel like, if you've suffered from multiple miscarriages, you should at least be offered this as part of the investigations.
I've added the image from my HSG - my 'weird' uterus in on the right and a normal one is one the left.
Anyway, i just wanted to spread awareness. If you have any questions, I'll do my best to answer them, but if you think it might help to give you answers, speak to your doctor about getting it scheduled

Hi @michileo I've just come across your post, thanks so much for sharing. So sorry to read what you've been through and tbh honest very similar to me, I've had a missed miscarriage then a miscarriage and then two chemicals all in 12 months. I'm worried that maybe my first miscarriage caused scarring on my womb, I had to have an MVA. Like you, no doctor has suggested I have a HSG but thinking I should get one privately to see.
Has there been any suggestion of where you go from here? Any other treatment to try?
Wishing you all the best!

Hi @Annie808,
thanks for getting in touch! I’m so sorry to hear that you’ve also struggled. I found the MVA really difficult, so I’m also sorry you went through that.
After my HSG, a surgery was recommended to fix the shape issue I had (which we did). It was under general anaesthetic, but a quick procedure. The doctor I saw did say that there could have been potential scarring caused by my MVA, which was mainly what they were looking for with me, so it’s probably worth checking out. I think it’s an expensive test though.
I should add that I’m currently 11 weeks pregnant - the furthest along I’ve ever been, so I’m pretty sure the surgery was a success 🙂

@michileo thanks for your quick reply! Oh wow that’s amazing congrats with the pregnancy so far!
if you don’t mind me asking did you carry on the CRP for this pregnancy? I just started wihh the CRP before this last chemical, very focused on immunes but not sure if necessary if that isn’t really the problem! I’ve had various ultrasound scans before and never been told of a problem with my uterus but I guess ultrasounds can only see so much. I will look at getting a HSG as a starting point!x

michileo · 09/03/2023 13:56

@Annie808, I stopped going to the CRP clinic in May/June last year. I wasn’t sure that immune system issues were really my problem either. It seems like everyone who goes there has the same outcome/issue so I admit I’m skeptical, but that doesn’t mean that it doesn’t work really well for loads of women.
and obviously, the HSG might not reveal anything, but it’s definitely worth trying.
Good luck! I really hope you find answers and that you have a successful pregnancy soon and if you’d like to keep in touch, I’d love to know how it goes x

@michileo yeh I know what you mean, I’m def a bit more unsure after having a chemical under the immune treatment. Will probs gives it a few more months then decide, while in tandem having hsg.
thanks so much for all information! And will let you know how it goes, and hope you continue with a successful and smooth pregnancy! :)

hey! what was the name of your uterine anomaly? arcuate?

DoctorMartin · 12/05/2023 21:03

I had an HSG after three mc - I never got the results but I was pregnant with DD2 within three weeks. It's not a pleasant procedure but do have it if you're offered!

michileo · 12/05/2023 21:22

@Sunflower1235 he doc told me I had a t-shaped uterus, and the surgery notes mention ‘lateral walls / indentation’, but that doesn’t seem like an official name for it, so I’m not sure. Sorry!
