Foul smelling lady garden department after miscarriage. You are going to tell me to go and see the doc, aren't you...

Was going to namechange, but as is the MN tradition involving smelly fanny threads, would probably out myself by mistake anyway....

I miscarried around 12th January, I wasn't very far on in the pregnancy - 6 weeks at most.

Anyway, I bled for almost a week and noticed today that there is a terrible stench down below. I have suffered from nasty bouts of thrush before, but this is an entirely different smell. There is no discharge, and I haven't noticed any pain.

Does it sound like some sort of infection following the miscarriage? I have just finished a week long course of erythromycin for a really awful ear infection, and I would have thought that would have cleared an infection down below.

Any thoughts? Other than get thee to the doctor....

get thee to the doctor, really. You DO need to be checked out.

gomez · 22/01/2008 20:28

Ah Maw I am sorry. But, presuming you haven't been using tampons and left one in, then get yea to the doctor my dear. May require a specific anti-bi.

Once again I am sorry.

kindersurprise · 22/01/2008 20:28

Sorry to hear about your m/c

Get to a doctor. (you knew I was going to say that)

It could be a womb infection which will need antibiotics to clear up.

Did you have a scan after your m/c?

Moomin · 22/01/2008 20:28

So sorry to hear about your miscarriage.

and, yes, you must go to the doc's, see if you have an infection or something. (But you knew you'd be told to do that didn't you?!)

Hope it goes ok.

Yes I'm afraid it does. Get thee to the miscarriage unit and get a scan. Sorry about the mc mawbroon

cece · 22/01/2008 20:32

I am taking Ab for an infection (after mc)and they are stronger than erythromycin, so yes go see your doc.

expatinscotland · 22/01/2008 20:32

I'm very sorry about your loss, mawbroon.

Please see a doctor.

Yes, you really do need to see one!

mawbroon · 22/01/2008 21:01

Yes, seems unanimous! Will go to the doc tomorrow. Or do you think it would be better to call the pregnancy support unit?

OP posts:
expatinscotland · 22/01/2008 21:02

i'd give them a call becuase it's probably a good idea to have a scan, too, to make sure all the products of conception have been expelled.

i'm sorry you're going through this.

mawbroon · 22/01/2008 21:06

OK, will call them in the morning. I did have a scan at the time, but I had only been bleeding a couple of days, so I guess it would have looked different to how it does now.

Anybody know what I would be likely to get anti-biotics wise? I would need to check if it was ok as still breastfeeding 2yo ds.

OP posts:
expatinscotland · 22/01/2008 21:09

i got something after my D&C, but i don't remember what it was.

got thrush, though.

bumping to see if someone knows.

expatinscotland · 22/01/2008 21:17

anyone know what antibiotics are commonly given after M/C?

whomovedmychocolate · 22/01/2008 21:20

I think flagyl is used commonly - that's okay when bfing. I know you can have some because I did after my mc but if you have gotten to the smelly stage you may need IV antibiotics so you'll be admitted for 24 hours.

mawbroon · 22/01/2008 21:22

Oh yuk to thrush expat. Pretty sure this isn't thrush though.

They told me at the pregnancy support unit to use pads for the bleeding, and I used my mooncup. I asked the nurse if it would be ok and she said she didn't see why not. Hope that's not why I've got this damned infection....

OP posts:
mawbroon · 22/01/2008 21:23

Oh no, do you think so whomovedmychocolate?

Hope not

OP posts:
expatinscotland · 22/01/2008 21:24

No, I got the thrush after the ab's.

whomovedmychocolate · 22/01/2008 21:26

Mawbroon it's not so bad - you get a private room if you are breastfeeding, you get to take your baby and they do the scan and everything while you are there. Better 24 hours treatment and monitoring than recurrent trips to an apathetic outpatient dept IME.

mawbroon · 22/01/2008 21:26

Right, yes, I believe thrush is common after a/bs expat. Mind you I have just completed a week long course of a/bs for ear infection, but I am pretty sure it's not thrush.

OP posts:
expatinscotland · 22/01/2008 21:28

in Edinburgh you're handled on the GYN unit, not the maternity area.

mawbroon · 22/01/2008 21:28

LOL, yes, my 2yo baby! Well, still, I hope it's not as bad as to come to that....

OP posts:
whomovedmychocolate · 22/01/2008 21:31

I was also admitted to gynae. TBH it was pretty awful - I had a side room but I was in there with a baby and all the other women on the wards had had hysterectomies or abortions that day

mawbroon · 22/01/2008 21:31

expat - yes, ward 210 I think it is. I was seen there on a Saturday evening when the bleeding got heavy, and then the pregnancy support unit did my scan and bloods etc the next day. I was glad that I didn't have to see pregnant women and newborns

OP posts:
expatinscotland · 22/01/2008 21:34

I'm glad you didn't, either.

I had two threatened miscarriages there with the girls and was handled on the GYN unit - very well, I might add.

I developed a bad D&V bug in my second trimester with DD2 and was again put in a private room in the GYN area on a drip to get rehydrated.

Hope you get things sorted either at your GP or the pregnancy unit tomorrow.

Are you in pain? Hope not.

No, the thrush was nothing like what you describe.

Again, sorry for your loss

mawbroon · 22/01/2008 21:37

How old was your baby at the time whomoved?

I couldn't fault the treatment I was given both on the gynae ward and in the pregnancy support unit. The staff were really nice but still professional I thought. A good balance.
