Miscarriage operation - how long to recover

Hi all
I had a miscarriage sadly - it's been going on for 4 weeks of natural bleeding and I found out about it on 31st July but now I have been advised to have the operation as there is 2.5cm of retained tissues.
It's booked in for next week and I’m nervous about it all including the general anaesthetic. Does anyone have any experience? Thank you

Also I wanted to ask how long to get back to work etc? I have a busy week at work with various meetings including one the day after the operation that as I was meant to travel for 3 hours for... and it's making me more nervous as don't know if I will be up to it physically and maybe emotionally 😢

Sorry to hear about your miscarriage, it’s really hard to go through.
When I had the surgical management for my missed miscarriage (which I’m pretty sure is the same operation as the one you’ll have) I was signed off for a week by the hospital. I definitely needed that time to recover properly even though physically I was up and about an hour or so after to operation. I think when they were doing the op they must have bumped my bladder because I felt like I’d got bad cystitis for several days after but regularly taking paracetamol and ibuprofen helped as well as having a hot water bottle (even though it was hot weather at the time!).
I went back to work after the week off but ended up having to take more time off due to my emotional health.
I was really nervous about the operation and the general anaesthetic but everyone was so lovely to me and it was absolutely fine. I was just panicking that I wasn’t falling asleep and the next time I was aware it was all over.
The short answer is don’t feel worried about the operation as it’s over really quickly but I’d recommend you take some time afterwards to take care of yourself.

Sorry to read this.

I had mine on a Friday and was back in work on Monday.

I had a mmc, but it took two weeks to get the operation so I was mentally and physically ready to go back then. I wouldn’t rush it but I wouldn’t just stay at home either.

physically - you will be fine quickly, depends how long you need. I felt it helped to get back to it.

I had one on Wednesday under GA on the emergency list so wasn't out of surgery til til 5 30pm. Discharged from hospital the next day, early afternoon. I would not have been up for a 3 hour travel, let alone being able to focus in a meeting.

On the plus side though didn't need any pain relief after the op.

Very best of luck.

Thank you very much all - the operation seemed to be okay. I was so anxious before hand but it was okay when it was all over. I am drowsy now but will rest tomorrow and today and see how I feel then. I appreciate your kind replies Flowers

And they gave me extra anaesthetic and something to make me calm (I don't know what but I do feel calm) to help with my anxiousness. The staff were all very kind and caring too x

Glad it went smoothly. Give yourself time to recover from the anaesthetic!
