MVA

I'm currently going through a mmc. Confirmed by scan on Friday- I should be 8 weeks tomorrow but no growth from 5 weeks and no heartbeat. I have opted for MVA which i am getting this week and I am really hoping for some advice.
If you have had it, was it manageable? Should I expect pain or does the local take it away? And for after, should I wear anything specific? What I mean is can I manage in jeans or do I need something more comfy? I'm nervous but I'm also glad that it's all nearly over and I put it behind me.

Hi @ANiceBigCupOfTea- firstly I’m so sorry for your loss and hope that you are doing ok. My situation was a bit different to yours as I had medical management first for my miscarriage and had the MVA afterwards to remove residual tissue so in my case the amount being removed was only around 12mm. Either way I can share my experience in that I found the procedure itself very straight forward. I understand it can be different for everyone but personally I didn’t feel any pain during the procedure thankfully- the toughest part was getting the first injection of anesthetic which was actually fine and after that I was all numb so didn’t feel any pain. I found the experience itself was more of mild discomfort than pain, very manageable for me thankfully overall.

I would recommend wearing looser pants/joggers for after the procedure too just from a comfort point of view. I wasn’t in any pain afterwards but just liked that I had comfy clothes to change into after it was done. Best of luck with it and hope everything goes well for you- take care xx

Thank you so much for your reply- you have really reassured me tbh.
I have a decent pain threshold but I absolutely hate needles so I think that will likely be a bit of a struggle but at least I won't see it.
Did you have gas and air with yours?
I'm really sorry for your loss too.

Sorry to hear about what you're going through and your loss.
I had an MVA in May for my second miscarriage and found it overall as "good" an experience as it could be. I only had local anesthetic, and found the setting up part a bit painful and uncomfortable but so so much calmer and much less painful than the home miscarriage I had in December.
I felt safe and taken care of. I hope you do too.

@ANiceBigCupOfTea I really hate needles also and was dreading that part but it wasn’t as bad as I had imagined it would be, just stung a bit going in but then it was manageable. No, I didn’t get offered gas or air during the procedure- maybe because it was just a small about of tissue they had to remove for me, I’m not sure. Let us know how you get on when you’re feeling up to
it, I do hope it goes well for you.

So I'm home having had a dilapan put in this morning (and omg it's so sore 😭 just really crampy) and I'm in for the MVA at 8.30 tomorrow.
So glad it will all be over soon

Thank you all so much for your replies. You really helped reassure me in the days before.
Just in case anyone finds themselves on this thread needing answers, I'm glad I went with this option. I had gas and air and was given pain relief to take before I left for the hospital. Some parts of it were genuinely painful, but the gas and air really helped. It was all over in about 10 minutes and then all had to do was sit for about an hour (I'd recommend you bring someone, even if you don't want them with you during the procedure so you have someone after), have some toast and something to drink, and check to make sure there wasn't too much bleeding. I'm now on my way home to watch some shamelessly rubbish TV (thinking maybe MAFS- judge away) and allow myself to recover.
And if you're finding yourself on this thread for advice, I'm so sorry for your loss.

@ANiceBigCupOfTea I’m glad to hear that you are able to start putting this behind you and can begin to really heal. I’m very sorry to hear that you were in pain but glad it was over quickly and that you are on the way home to relax and recover- I watched so much trashy tv and ate all the chocolate after my mva so delighted to hear you’re doing the same, it’s the best medicine after something like that! Wishing you all the best going forward from here, take care x

Hi ladies. I have recently just had an MVA. When did everybody get their periods back? And if you don't mind me asking, did you manage to conceive again? My OPK's are so low so just feeling disheartened atm x

SummerSkies1 · 06/09/2023 08:28

Hi @Rolo08 - sorry to hear you’re in a similar situation at the moment. I got my periods back ok. I had the MVA on the 19th of July and my next period was the 20th August and continued to be regular after that. Thankfully conceived again and currently 33 weeks pregnant. Wishing you all the best xx

Rolo08 · 06/09/2023 09:37

@SummerSkies1 oh that's lovely, congratulations! How many cycles did it take you to conceive? My OPK's are all over the place so feeling really disheartened atm x

SummerSkies1 · 06/09/2023 17:34

Thanks @Rolo08! It did take a few cycles but was pregnant again by February, time felt like it was going so slow in between cycles which was tough. Some people get pregnant straight away, so you just don’t know. Think my first positive opk was around the 6th/7th of august after the MVA so almost 3 weeks later xx
