Tommy's Clinic Referral

Hi everyone,

Sadly I am going through a MMC after having a MC last year and a stillbirth in 2020. It feels a little bit soul destroying, so I have asked my (absolutely amazing) bereavement midwife if I can be referred for testing now as although its not my third MC, it is my third loss. My son had Trisomy 13 so I am awaiting a referral for genetics too (it's not very likely for either of us to have a BT as he had full trisomy but I want it ruled out).
Anyway, the MW said she will speak to the doctor in charge of recurrent mc if they would consider me, but also advised I contact Tommy's as although I'm in NI they may consider me. I spoke to a really lovely lady there yesterday and she said she thinks I have a good case.
Has anyone any experience of that kind of referral, or testing for recurrent loss in general? Researching and seeing what's out there helps myself and DH feel more in control and that's what we need right now.
Sorry for the essay, and thank you if you have read til the end xx

Hello,

I'm also trying to get referred to Tommy's clinic but it's proving a bit tricky to get the referral through from the GP. Fingers crossed it's getting sorted this week but I have no idea what the wait is to see Dr Quenby at Coventry.

So sorry for your losses, it's such a lonely place from my experience and feels like it takes a lot of advocating for yourself to get doors to open.

Love and best wishes for the future.
Ruth

Hi @ANiceBigCupOfTea. I’m also in NI and had my referral for recurrent testing last week with Dr Bryson after a nine month wait. I had bloods done in December following that referral, nothing amiss, and another MMC in May. That was my fifth loss, although I do have DD who was pregnancy 2/6.

The remains of my last loss were sent off for genetic testing and nothing was found there. I was also on progesterone pessaries and low dose aspirin on that last one.

I’m “only” 33 so have basically been told cut down on caffeine and take folic acid (both of which I did after each positive test) whilst TTC and keep trying. If I keep losing them then they would look at more imagining and DNA testing or something, but the consultant felt that anything that came from those things that they could treat would provide only marginal benefits. If I keep losing pregnancies then they would start to chase those marginal gains.

It was a disappointing consultation because there were no answers, but given the lack of clues in my bloods I was expecting that it would go that way.

The consultant was really positive about Tommys though and was raving about the research they’re doing there. I really hope if you do get the referral there’s something they can do for you. I’m now thinking if I lose another I’ll explore going to see Dr Shehata in Epsom who was recommended to me by another NI lady in the same boat.

I’m sorry, it’s so shit isn’t it.

Thank you so much for your replies.
@TheCraicDealer I don't know if you have ever spoken with her but the bereavement midwife at the Royal is amazing and she has spoken to Dr Price there and she has agreed to see me! Which is brilliant. I have an MVA on Thursday for this miscarriage and then I'll speak to her next and hopefully get somewhere. I did speak to someone at Tommy's and they were amazing.
I'm so sorry for your losses too, both of you. Its most definitely shit xx
