Can someone explain karyotyping testing for recurrent pregnancy loss ?

Hi , I am 29 and iv had 6 early losses and my consultant thinks it’s chromosomes problems . So I am doing a chromosome testing called karyotyping , which checks my chromosomes .
my question is : is the results come back normal , could the chance be that my losses were not 100% caused by chromosome faults ? I mean like more chance it wasn’t that problem for all of the losses ? I know people can lose pregnancy’s because of chromosome problems but not 6 in a row , I have no other children . I understand that if my results come back abnormal and there is problems then I would think that’s probably my cause for my losses but what if it comes back normal ? Isn’t it a lot to lose 6 in a row at the same time at 6 weeks pregnant , if my results come back normal ? Thanks for reading and advising me xxx

If my results come back normal , would the consultant most likely still blame my losses for chromosomes problems ? Or will he start checking other possible causes instead ?

Chromosome problems can occur in any pregnancy. But with recurrent losses, they need to check if you have a difference in your chromosomes (and your partners) that make a chromosome issue much more likely to occur in a pregnancy. They will be checking to see if either of you have a translocation or other rearrangement in your chromosomes. If you do, you will be referred in for expert genetic advice.

@lisers thank you !! ☺️ But what if my and partners results come back normal ? Could I remove this as possible cause for recurrent losses then ? I just want to narrow it down to as few possible causes as possible 😗

If your karyotypes are both normal the obstetrician should be looking for another reason to explain you recurrent losses. I suggest you also find out if anyone else in your families have had recurrent losses.

Hey, I'm sorry you find yourself in this boat as well.
I will be going through this too due to SB caused by trisomy 13 and 2 miscarriages. What they tend to look for is a translocation which is where a little of one of your chromosomes have detached and joined onto another. My DH and I want to have the test as if we do, we can consider IVF with screening of the embryos before implantation.
I wish you all the very best and hope you get some answers and your rainbow xx

Hi there. I am soon to be going through this with my husband as we have now had 3 recurrent miscarriages. I am just wondering how did you tests/results go?

ShareLove · 27/09/2022 20:42

@Sophiey11 hey , I will get my results this week and I’ll let you know ! ☺️

@ShareLove ah that’s brilliant news. I’m so pleased for you. I’ve had some genetic testing done. It flagged that I’m carrying the MTHFR gene, and I’ve been advised to take aspirin next time I’m pregnant, but nothing too serious.

Hi
I'm so sorry for your losses x
I've been seeing a new doctor, who advised that my husband and I do karyotyping as well as part of a number of investigations he had done. He also suggested a HSG, which I had never heard of before or been offered. The HSG revealed that my uterus is T shaped rather than cone shaped, which he believes has cause my miscarriages. I'm not suggesting that this might be as issue you have, but because I had no idea about this, I'm on a mission to spread the word. My recommendation is to ask for the procedure - it can be used to flush your fallopian tubes, test to see if there is scarring in your uterus as well as to see if there are any structural problems (which btw can't be seen with a normal ultrasound).
Again, know that this might not be an issue for you, but just want to spread the word :)

@michileo hey thank you for your suggestion !I have had 3D scan and been suspected to have bicornuate uterus which looks like a heart shaped instead of normal pear shaped ! It’s very hard for them to difference between the different condition ! Bicornuate can also look like septum uterus , so I am waiting to have a saline scan SIS and hysteroscopy with camera inside to know for sure . I belive that is also my reason for losses . Well maybe not the shape of it but I’ll be doing the SIS saline scan to see maybe there are polyps or fibroids or scarring in the womb which normal 2D scan won’t show you as the uterus is closed . But with saline water scan it openes up like a balloon so they can see clearly if there is any over growths or polyp and if there is then I will get them removed and hopefully the polyps ect will be the cause of my losses which I could fix . X

@michileo have you got any plans for your T shaped uterus? What is your outlook on carrying pregnancy ? Will you be having an operation to fix it or just keep trying ? Xx

@michileo sorry I mean my uterus is arcuate shape , so almost normal shape but has a curve on the top instead of straight line .

Can someone explain karyotyping testing for recurrent pregnancy loss ?

@ShareLove I'm glad to hear you were offered a scan, can I ask if you’re having it privately or with the NHS?
I'm having surgery later today to fix it, actually 🙂 The specialist is doing a Hysteroscope to correct the shape. Unfortunately, because I’m also almost 40, he can’t guarantee that there won’t be issues with egg quality etc. His recommendation is also to do an egg retrieval and fertilisation with genetics testing, but we’ll cross that bridge later - taking it one step at a time!
Do you have a date for your scan yet?

michileo · 04/11/2022 01:27

@ShareLove just adding my scan image below: mine is on the right and a normal uterus is on the left. Mine is also smaller than normal apparently

Hi Op, sorry for your losses. I had recurring losses too and all our tests at the clinic we went to were normal but I continued to lose. Even when we had IVF with a genetically tested embryo I got pregnant but lost it. The IVF clinic just said it was bad luck and to try again.

From my experience many clinics are not very extensive with their investigations for reoccurring losses. I eventually went to see Dr Shehata at the CRP clinic in Epsom and he was very thorough - I had 17 vials of blood(!) taken for various testing including thyroid and conditions involving the immune system. It showed that I had over active natural killer cells that were attacking my pregnancies and he basically told me I had no chance of carrying a pregnancy without being on immunosuppressants. I took the protocol to my IVF consultant and he just said 'there are different schools of thought', I.E. didn't really think it would work but I was insistent that I wanted to try it alongside the IVF. I got pregnant the next IVF cycle and now have a baby boy.

I strongly recommend you explore this avenue, I am so grateful to have found him, just wish it was a little sooner! All the best xx
