3rd miscarriage - what tests should I be asking for?

Hi everyone, just had my 3rd miscarriage and I’m trying to work out next steps. Everything from - How long is the waiting list to recurrent miscarriage clinic on nhs? If there is anywhere I can go to pay for the tests? If so, where? What tests and how often? It’s a minefield. The general fertility MOTs I’ve seen advertised for £400-500 don’t seem to cover the recurrent miscarriage specific tests that Tommys recommend. I’d love to know what other women have done in the same situation, what was helpful? And what wasn’t?

Hi, would also love this information, to make sure I've got myself covered too.

I'm based in Australia so our system is a little different. My GP ran some tests after my second miscarriage, looking into my thyroid function and testing for blood clotting disorders. She also did a swab that came up positive for a type of bacteria that is associated with miscarriage.

I've also read that if you have a family history of celiacs it may be worth testing for this.

Sorry for your losses, hope you are able to get some answers.

First of all I’m really sorry.

You need to see the recurrent miscarriage clinic as they will offer testing as well as putting a plan into place for future pregnancies depending on the results.

Testing usually includes:

  • hormone levels checking
  • thrombophillia screen
-thyroid testing -you should have been offered cytogenetic testing of the fetus on your third miscarriage to look for chromosome abnormalities -ultrasound to look for any uterine or pelvic abnormalities -vaginal swabs

Can also include additional tests depending on your history and other test results like sometimes a laparoscopy, contrast dye ultrasound of the Fallopian tubes, genetic testing for you and your partner.

Going private would prove very expensive. The £400-£500 you’ve seen will be the most basic testing and include no follow on testing. It also likely won’t include a treatment plan to act on the results. Like progesterone, tinzaparin, thyroxine, serial beta HCG, early ultrasound. All of which are potential recommendations to help sustain a pregnancy depending on the findings.

As to the waiting list. It differs in every area so impossible to answer. In my clinic it’s currently an 8 week wait. The tests cannot be completed when pregnant so we do have a lot of women reach the top of the list and have to come off it as they are pregnant so some wait less than that as they then jump up. Other areas could be much longer however.

In interested In this also due to previous MC - and I wondered if they test for autoimmunity also? I heard there may be some connection to this with MC?
Thanks
