Surgical miscarriage management advice please

I am having surgery under general anesthetic tomorrow after finding out that baby's heartbeat stopped at 6.5 weeks.
I am feeling a bit anxious about being put to sleep (I had 2 surgery before and the waking up bit was the worse) so I thiugh that maybe taking my sister with me might make me feel less anxious. I am not sure if you are allowed to take someone with you?
My husband said he can come with me but If I am on the ward full of other ladies ,he may feel a bit odd.

Did anyone go in for the surgery alone or is it better to take someone with you ? Do I need to take any change of clothes or sanitary pads with me ? I haven't been told more that to come at 7.30 and to fast from midnight today.

Please could someone give me helpful advice on how to make the sad experience a bit more bearable?
Thank you

@Pregnantandvworried So sorry for your loss.

I had ERPC two weeks ago. I also went in at 7:30am. I’m guessing each trust works differently but I wasn’t allowed anyone to go in with me. My husband took me to the EPU, then he just left and went to the canteen. I never asked if he could sit in the room while I waited though. Also it was my first time having general anaesthetic so I was nervous.

I turned up at 7:30am, then at 8ish I took two misprosol. A nurse took my blood (to confirm my blood type). Took my blood pressure, oxygen level and temperature. Then I was waiting for about an hour, in that time the anaesthetist talked to me confirming details and for me to ask questions. Then the doctor also visited and I had to check paperwork, sign, dob etc. Got changed into the hospital gown at 9am and then 9:15ish someone from the theatre collected me. It was a 5 min walk through corridors, I’m glad I took slippers to walk in. I then entered the room where they give you the general anaesthetic. They asked me to confirm my signature, name etc and what I was there for. Then talked me through what they were doing. I remember talking to them and then the next thing I knew I was waking up in the recovery room and someone said it was all done. I found it fine, just like I had forgotten how I got from A to B and strangely felt tired. They waited a short period (maybe 20mins) to check on me, take my blood pressure and I think they gave me a painkiller/paracetamol. Then took me back to the EPU on the bed. That was around 11am by that point. I took another 20-30minutes just sitting there and having a cup of tea. Then I got dressed. Then 20 minutes later my husband picked me up.

I took slippers and I was glad I did. The nurse also asked if I had a dressing gown but I didn’t know I needed one, so she got me a second hospital gown to put on. That was fine in the end.

I took a few always pads, however I found there were also some provided in the toilet and they were the large thick pads so I put one on to feel more secure with the disposable underwear.

It was my first time as a day patient or really a patient at all. I found the visit was fine, I was nervous about the general anaesthetic but it was a quick process. Everyone I met was friendly and helpful. I hope it goes ok for you tomorrow.

Thank you very much for taking time to reply and sharing your experience and I'm sorry you had to go through this.

I will take my slippers with me , that's a good idea.
I think I will go in on my own. Hopefully I won't spend there all day. X

I had the surgery without GA. I had my partner with me. I would recommend taking someone with you. Anyone that's getting this done will usually have their partners with them. Thinking of you 💐

I had it back in March and had my husband with me while I was waiting in the EPU, then he collected me from the day ward when it was done. Mine went really smoothly and I was glad to know it was "sorted" if that makes sense. Everyone was so kind too.

@Pregnantandvworried hi Op, good luck for the op ✨️ I wasn't allowed to bring in my DH which I wasn't warned in advance about which is a shame. Apparently if he had done a covid test at the hospital the day before, he may have been allowed. The op itself is completely fine - I just felt cold afterwards so they gave me this lovely heated blanket. I was sad when they took it away so I could be wheeled back into the ward! My two tips - bring a book or something to keep you entertained and secondly you may need to wait a few hours till you are taken to theatre. I was waiting till 4:30pm for my op (there were some emergencies which were prioritised before me). Hope all goes well xxxxx

Thank you everyone . I wish we didn't have to go through this :(

I am on the ward now , waiting for my turn to go to theatre. Unfortunately my husband can only come during visiting hours.

Good luck @Pregnantandvworried , honestly the worst bit is the wait, so once that is over with you will be relieved in a sense. Thoughts are with you xx

Just and update.
I got taken to the theatre at 12 pm,woke up at 1.45 pm and wheeled to the EPU ward at 2.30 pm.
The Doctor said the surgery went well and the tissue was sent to the histopathology for testing but I won't really find out the results unless something very abnormal.

I felt OK after the surgery and got home about 8pm. Just resting in bed as my back and legs are aching a lot and I feel super tired.
