Recurrent miscarriage - where do I go from here?

The title says it all really, 3 losses in the last 10 months. Currently In that awful limbo period of waiting to pass naturally with provisional surgery booked for next Wednesday. This is my second MMC and the other was a MC.

I feel numb to the core this time, I’m sure the emotions will hit me at some point. But I’m trying to think logically and where to go from here. I know I want a break from trying as the last 9 months have been nothing but heart ache, so I’m going to give my body a break for the next 3-6 months.

My first step was booking a GP appointment, asking for as many blood tests they could complete in house and also asking for a referral to Professor Quenby at the Coventry Clinic.

Just couple of questions for those in similar situations -

  • How long did you have to wait for a referral to a RMC clinic?
  • Have any of you paid privately, if so what happened?
  • What healing tips do you have? It seems every TV programme, every bit of fresh air I’m reminded of the fact I’m not a mother.
  • Are there any forums / ongoing groups to support with this? I’m really struggling to find any up to date threads.
  • Im particular interested in testing of NK cells, I say that because I was already on Clexane for previous clotting problems so that’s ruled out. And I have no evidence to suggest my progesterone levels were/ are low.
  • Has anybody been prescribed steroids and had a successful pregnancy?
  • I have briefly read not going back on to contraception and using condoms, as it could potentially interfere with required testing? Any comments on this?
Thank you for your time - and I really appreciate a response. X

Hi there

so so sorry for what you are going through. I had to log back in so that I can tell you my story and give you hope…as I know that’s what I was looking for when I went through a tough time.
I had an ectopic and two miscarriages after my eldest. Basic blood tests were fine abs the waits to see anyone were long with the NHS. I read about the Coventry protocol and went to a private consultant in Wales who agreed to put me on the meds. I did want to see professor quenby as I have heard amazing things about her but gettting a referral from Wales would have been tricky and I think I would have had to wait a little while for the private tests back then (which would have been the best thing to do but I didn’t feel I could wait at the time).

I took clexane, progesterone, aspirin and 5mg steroids and I then had my little boy six and a half years ago. I then fell pregnant when he was six months old with my youngest daughter and i took the meds again.

I fell pregnant then about 2.5 years ago and the GP that helped me to get the meds with my daughter was on holiday. I was a bit lighter, less stressed, diet was a bit better etc and I thought I might be ok to have a normal pregnancy but sadly I lost that one. I then had my youngest son one year ago (again taking the meds). So for me something in that works …I just don’t know what so the testing and being under an expert would have helped, but I’m so grateful.

I also saw a fertility nutritionist and did some tests etc. I cut out caffeine, down on carbs, increased the vegan protein (I’m vegan), decreased sugar and took supplements. I managed to reverse high testosterone and also got my cycle from 32 days to 28 days bang on with no spotting. It’s the only time I’ve managed to really have a strict diet when I’ve been trying for a baby. Wish I could do that for myself again now…

I also took doxycycline as my private consultant said that was in trials, looking at reduction in miscarriages as some women have endometritis.

so against all the odds I have four beautiful children. I just had to find something that worked for me and despite how fantastic the NHS is I know that the last three wouldn’t have been here without all the extra stuff..:but you may be able to get better referrals than I was able to :)

good luck xxxx

@Lifeafterloss22 I'm so sorry to hear about your losses. I also lost 3 pregnancies in 10 months, the last one being in January. I got put in the RMC list and have still not heard a thing. But I did decide to go private. All tests came back normal apart from I have slight PCOS. I think I healed a bit better having done the tests because it made me fee proactive.

Before my third loss, I alSo had nk cells testing at Coventry and my results were inconclusive as one showed high nk cells and the other low. Professor Brosens has been great and has since tried me on sitagliptin which I'm still taking.

I also read the book It Starts With an Egg and am taking all the vitamins recommended in there. I never got tested for MTHFR so I take methyl folate instead anyway and high dose vitamin D. I have also tried to become more active and lose a few extra pounds. Who knows if any of it will make a difference but it makes me feel better.

I have also been prescribed progesterone for my next pregnancy so all I'm doing now is waiting. No further pregnancies yet but hoping it can be soon 🤞

@Lifeafterloss22 I'm so sorry to hear of your miscarriages. It's hard. I have had 3 consecutive losses recently, all before or around 5 weeks so still quite early but painful nonetheless. I registered with the GP after my 3rd and it's taken 5 months to get my referral appointment (which is next month). I've had a couple of tests which have flagged a few things but nothing (I don't think!) that would have caused the miscarriages. I have decided I will go private for some help as I'm mentally exhausted from it all.

From my extensive research, here's a couple of recommendations: if you have high bmi, consider trying to shift the weight, if over 35 use 200mg ubiquonol (sp?) as this helps egg quality, if you have a crazy cycle maybe try acupuncture, make sure you are taking folic acid (I've never been tested for mthfr but I take folate instead to eliminate that one - it's tres pricey though), eat enough protein and fats, take 10ug vit d, take aspirin / progesterone from 3dpo (you'll need a sympathetic GP for that as it's not usually offered).

Regarding forums, there are a few in Conception boards which are active and you'll find lots of lovely women who have gone through the same thing. Big hugs 💕
