17hr flight, potential to miscarry

I have a blighted ovum - sac measuring 5 weeks. I'll be 9.5 weeks by the time my flight leaves and 11.5 weeks when I return.

The sac seems to have completely stopped growing. I'm due to travel in a week so not enough time to arrange a D&C.

What's a miscarriage like this likely to be like? Would it be just a bit worse than a period because the sac only measures 5 weeks? In which case, surely would be fine to miscarry naturally on the plane, should it happen?

Sonographer said she wouldn't recommend it as it's a very long flight, but I'll lose so much money if I rearrange because the cost of flights has massively gone up.

Any advice would be much appreciated!

Treatment costs. Sorry.

HarrietteNightingale · 03/03/2022 00:23

Soaked through pads into mins.

Blood clots the size of livers

Had to bin the sofa and mattresses
Rushed to hospital, needed blood transfusions etc

Exactly my experience. And I was the same as you regards weeks pregnant when this happened. I wouldn't risk the flight Thanks

eurochick · 03/03/2022 03:37

I had a mmc at a similar gestation. Like others I had a lot of pain and spent a couple of days between laying in bed and sitting on the toilet. Once I had passed the sac it was just like a heavy period and I actually flew long haul for work on the Sunday after passing the sac on Thursday. I was tired but that was doable. I would like to have been on the plane Wednesday or Thursday.

My miscarriages one at 5 weeks one at 6 weeks

It was just like a period , if I hadn't been tracking ovulation and done early pregnancy tests I wouldn't have know it was a miscarriage at all

However mine occurred on there own so I imagine that's different for missed miscarriages

Sorry for your loss

Don't travel. If you lose the baby, you will never forget it, just not worth the risk. It will always be a 'what if' . You will be so anxious on those flights
Can you get a voucher for your flight (Covid still rife) for another time?

HoppingPavlova · 03/03/2022 06:21

Sorry you are going through this. But would you rather lose you baby or your money?

Guessing even with the broad rage of posts on Mumsnet, this will still win the Grand Dickhead of 2022 award by the time December rolls around. Well done. Maybe actually read the OP, and if you still don’t get it some comprehension classes?

Christ on a bike. You have a rival!

Read the OP folks - she has unfortunately already lost the baby. It must be hurtful enough without people being complete dicks on the internetHmm.

What a terrible post to not read properly. She already lost the baby ffs how insensitive. God knows op probably wants the distraction of a trip to visit family.

Sorry you're going through this op, no experience but sending Flowers

Is there an option to pay for private treatment before you go? Maybe cheaper than rearranging

ittakes2 · 03/03/2022 06:38

I am sorry for your lose - I think a lot of people don't understand what a blighted ovum is.
Are you sure you can't get a private D&C before you fly? might be cheaper than losing the flight at 17hrs.

thefamous5 · 03/03/2022 06:39

I'm so sorry you're even having to contemplate this.

For balance, I had a blighted ovum pregnancy a few years ago. I had very light spotting for two or three days and then the day I passed the sac, I had tummy cramps (like early labour) for about an hour, went to the loo and had a couple of gushes where the sac passed, then about another half an hour or so of cramping and bleeding like a heavy period , and then it was nothing worse than spotting.

I hope you're ok

Mistressiggi · 03/03/2022 06:48

Are you sure there isn't enough time for a d&c? It is worth asking at the least, if there was a cancellation you might be brought in quickly.
Sorry for your loss OP.

Ginandplatonic · 03/03/2022 06:50

That sounds like a horrible situation OP, I’m so sorry. One thing to consider is where you are going and whether there is reciprocal health care. Given your MMC is pre-existing I doubt travel insurance would cover you should you need medical treatment while there.

How incredibly rude and insensitive, coming onto a post on such a sensitive topic and then choosing not to even take the time to read it properly before responding.
koalalala · 03/03/2022 09:02

You absolutely should not travel. You may need emergency care if blood loss is bad. I.e transfusions etc. obviously that's absolute worst case scenario and you might be fine but you can't risk it.

I'm so sorry you're in this situation. Awful.

Covidwoes · 03/03/2022 09:12

@Yellowdott I got on a flight to Europe two
days after a D&C. Not nice, but better than the alternative.

MangoLipstick · 03/03/2022 09:28

I’m sorry for your loss op.

I had a mmc at 12 weeks. Wee baby had stopped growing at about 6 weeks.
For me, the pain was nothing like labour pain or even close to bad period pain, it felt more like a stitch. Even the midwife couldn’t understand my lack of pain. I had a significant amount of blood loss and clots though, that soaked through pads in seconds and through my trousers /car seat on the way to the hospital. I would not want to be on a plane if that happens. Even though I knew what was happening, it was still traumatic and I just wanted to curl up in bed.

Yellowdott · 03/03/2022 09:49

Thank you for sharing all your experiences and I'm so sorry for your losses. This thread has made me feel a lot less alone and has been incredibly helpful emotionally, so thank you so much Flowers

I've decided to postpone travel by a month and just forget about the lost money as even if the risk of something extreme happening is low, i don't want to risk it. And also I'd be so stressed thinking 'what if it starts and I can't cope with the pain etc being so far from home'.

I have to have another scan to properly confirm the miscarriage on Tuesday since for some reason even though there's no hope those are the rules. Maybe they can do the D&C the next day and then I could travel, but to be honest, probably it's better to postpone and allow myself time to process all this.

Thanks again everyone!

I was offered a next day surgical management twice, can you ask when they can fit you in? They can also offer pills for you to take at home. Could you do this option and take the pills once you are out there with family? I passed a miscarriage at 8wks, and it was painful, but I only had paracetamol, so it may have been better with something stronger, can they offer you better pain relief? The pain only lasted a few hours for me, but was quite intense, with contraction like feelings.

Clymene · 03/03/2022 10:42

I think that's a good idea OP. My experience was like many of the others - excruciating pain for a couple of days and I wasn't able to go far from a loo.

They had booked me in for a second scan but I started to miscarry before that happened. If you miscarry naturally, you'll have to have a scan to check everything has come away.

I'm so sorry and hope your rearranged trip is lovely Thanks

Frazzled2207 · 03/03/2022 17:09

Pleased to hear.

I really wouldn’t want to travel in these circs even if things do progress this week. I’ve had bad periods on planes and that was bad enough.

Wishing you all the best
