Tissue being tested after first miscarriage?!

Sadly I suffered a MC and opted for surgical management a few days ago.

Ive read that they do not send tissue off for testing until you’ve had 3 miscarriages, however I was advised they would be sending the tissue off and I would only hear (in writing) if anything was found.

Do these tests ever really result in anything being found and if so how much info is provided?

I have a son who I had by c-section last year and asked the consultant if my MC was caused due to the scar from c-section, she said from the scans it does not look like baby attached to the scar so this has been ruled out but wondering why they are testing after only 1 loss…

Anyone else offer any insight into the testing?

If it's an early miscarriage (under 12 weeks, especially under 8 weeks) it's highly unlikely they would test, they are more common than we realised, if it's a late miscarriage then they will want to know the cause potentially as that is more unusual.

Thank you. Baby was measuring around 8 weeks (should have been 10) but had a heartbeat at 6 weeks.

They advised me twice they would send off for testing but know it’s not the norm.

It may be they are testing for a molar pregnancy. That's what happened after my recent surgical management.

It's a very specific test to rule it out and if it's negative (they are rare) then you just know it wasn't that - it won't tell you any other cause.

You can call the EPU and ask them to explain again - it's normal to have questions. I hope you're doing ok otherwise.

Also to add, I had the same - heartbeat at 7 weeks but sadly it didn't work out. They still tested for partial molar, just in case.

Luckyme30 · 03/10/2021 08:24

@Shortmamashortcycles ahh I see! This could be the case as they just said that I would only hear from them if there was anything to ‘report’.

Thank you, quite frankly the EPU staff have been terrible, I had to fight for surgical management and had to organise it myself pretty much with the ward at my local hospital as EPU wouldn’t facilitate it so it makes it a little more difficult to contact them as they haven’t made any of the arrangements for me.

I’ll just wait and see what I get/if I get anything at all :)

So sorry to hear your experience was similar :( It’s heart breaking!

I guess I knew something wasn’t right as I had a first scan there when I should have been 8 weeks but measured 6-7 weeks, I was sure of my dates as I had a scan when I happened to be ovulating so I knew the dates and just knew they didn’t add up :( also my symptoms were non-existent - I just knew in my heart of hearts!

I hope you’re doing ok x

Hi OP, my embryo was ‘sent off for testing’ after my second IVF MMC (I had a previous natural one but it was 19 years before so they don’t always count it), but the results came back as ‘confirmed products of conception’ so they didn’t do the whole genetic testing I’d been hoping for (and have managed to get for my 3rd IVF MMC), just testing to make sure that the MC was complete, if you see what I mean. That took a couple of weeks. The genetic testing has been 5 weeks so far, don’t know how much longer it will take.

Luckyme30 · 03/10/2021 08:29

@Sunbird24 thank you! I wonder if that’s all that was meant when they said ‘testing’ as I can’t see a reason they would want to test for my first mc. Especially as I have had one successful pregnancy last year.

I’m so sorry for your losses and I do hope you hear re your genetic testing - wishing you all the best x

Good luck! Don't go down a google hole - the miscarriage association website has good and sensible info on partial molar if you want to learn more. I want to emphasise again - they're rare.

My results were back in 2-3 weeks but I had to phone and chase to confirm they were negative so I understand how frustrating it can be.

I'm so sorry you're having to go through this, especially if EPU aren't being helpful. Don't be afraid to be pushy and ask for extra scans and check ups after if you have prolonged spotting or feel things aren't right.

@Shortmamashortcycles thank you I am going to have a look into this now, I just feel I do need some answers, I know it’s unlikely I’ll ever get them, I guess it feels like it would be closure if I did get the answers.

Thank you! Just what I needed to hear to be honest, I absolutely will be pushy especially after the fight I had over choosing the surgical option.
