Waiting to miscarry naturally

I have been bleeding (lightly) for 3 weeks, blighted ovum has been diagnosed. I decided to let nature take its course and wait to miscarry naturally, but 3 weeks on, I'm begining to wonder how much longer this will take. A second scan today showed that the sac is still intact. I'm told most women miscarry within a month ... anyone got any experience of this?

So sorry to hear this sad news.

No experience of this but could not let your post go unanswered

Thanks BALR (in what way???), that's really kind. Also posted under the "pregnancy' subject header, and have had lots of helpful replies. Thanks again for your kind words.

Sorry to hear this, hope things have progressed for you.

I have had this twice, last year I was diagnosed with a blighted ovum / empty sac when I started bleeding at 8 weeks and completed the miscarriage naturally within 5 days. Currently I waiting to miscarry naturally after a scan at 8 weeks showed an empty sac again, I started bleeding at 9 weeks and thought I had finished 3 days later but infortunately have continued to bleed lightly - more scans have shown retained products and so I am having a d+c on wednesday, unless nature has taken its course by then. I will have been bleeding for 2 weeks by then.
I'm not sure what is the right thing to do but the hospital told me it could take up to 6 weeks to complete naturally and I want to get back to normal wrt my other children and also work. Not sure if these are good reasons for surgical intervention though?

Take care

it took one of my friend 5 weeks to miscarry as she wanted to miscarry naturally. It was a vvveerryyy slow miscarriage. Ended up having D&C on the 5th week.

so sorry to hear youre going thru this. Thinking of you

so sorry jm. I had this twice, first pregnancy, then in between dd1 and 2. It's a horrid term, 'blighted ovum', I thought, didn't help me feel great about things! I this yr first pregnancy or do you have children already?

santaslittlepeatbogelf · 03/12/2007 10:13

sorry, Is this ...

and I had d&cs for both, but understand you wanting it to happen w/out the anaesthetic and surgery

tsom and slpbe, so sorry to hear you guys have gone/are going through this twice, how awful. I have still not miscarried naturally and it has been more than a month now. I have eventually decided to go for a D&C (am booked in for tomorrow) as I don't want this hanging over me much longer, especially as I have my DS's 1st bday next week. And even if I waited it out, I might still have to end up having a D&C, like your friend, biglips.

Good luck on Wed, tsom - your reasons for going for a D&C are completely sound. And thanks to all for your posts.

I had some bleeding for about a week after 1st m/c then waited another month to see if product would be expelled it wasn't so had d/c - in some ways wish I'd just taken the decision to go for op after couple of weeks (when it was perfectly obvious I wasnt going to expel the rest) as going for repeated scans etc just prolonged the agony. So you've definitely done the right thing -good luck tomorrow xx
