retained tissue after erpc

Hoping for some help guidance if possible please.

I gave birth to my little boy at 18 weeks pregnant on the 16th April and had to have a erpc on the 17th due to retained placenta and during the operation they said I had already developed an infection over night. Sunday and Monday bleeding and pain wasn't too much of an issue then Wednesday I started soaking pads again and then this morning I woke up and was in agony so I rang the ward and they got me in for a scan and appointment scan showed retained placenta still but they don't want to do another erpc yet. They have sent me home with dihydrocodeine and some new antibiotics after previous 5 day course. My question is what is the likely hood of this passing in the next week?(they are calling Monday to see how the pain etc is) my cervix is currently closed but my uterus can be clearly felt when doing examination. I'm so scared about getting a bigger infection after having a fever last night but also so scared about having another erpc. I just want to be able to get past my health and focus on grieving for our little boy 😓 has anyone had a similar experience? Sorry for rambling!

Hi, I'm sorry for your loss, it's horrible and being unwell is not what you need right now.
I had retained placenta after giving birth to my first. It was a live birth at 38+2. I had a d&c to remove the placenta at about 8 weeks however they couldn't get it all out and said that they would be risking damaging the lining of my uterus if they scraped at jt (lovely!) So they told me to come back in 2 weeks for another d&c to get anything out that was still there, but told me it could also pass naturally in that time.
By the second d&c there was nothing left and in those two weeks everything had broken down and I'd passed it all with some pretty heavy bleeding. So it's definitely possible.
I did have to have both of the d&c procedures though, both with a general anesthestic.
Sorry if this sounds insensitive posting about a live birth when you're grieving. My second pregnancy I lost very early and had a d&c at 8 weeks for the erpc and my third pregnancy was twins, I had them at 32 weeks and one was stillborn. So I do very much understand that at the moment you need to grieve not be dealing with this.
I wish you all the best x

Thank you for replying! I am booked for another operation Tuesday as there's some remaining that still hasn't passed but I also have a bleed that they are not sure where is coming from, thank you again for your help hoping this operation does the trick xxx

I hope it does. I think that with my second op there was a very small amount that was still there but it wasn't attached anymore so it was easily removed.

Hopefully you're able to get it all sorted out so that you are able to move on from this and you're able to grieve as you need without this hanging over you.
