I had a missed miscarriage in 2017 then a successfull pregnancy with my ds in 2019. Had another miscarriage in nov 2020 around 4/5weeks got pregnant again in jan 2021 had my dating scan and found baby had no heartbeat at 9 weeks got another scan tomorrow to double check. Can i ask them to refer me to a specialist as this will be my 3rd miscarriage, also will i be able to have d&c rather than wait for it to come out naturally?

Hi,

Sorry to hear you’re experiencing this.

Yes ask for a referral after 3 they don’t need to be consecutive but 2 miscarriages in a row isn’t deemed concerning medically as miscarriages are essentially normal (sadly) - arguably it’s very concerning when you’re the one going through it. Although reassuring that you have had one live baby.

Usually they offer the ‘natural’ route for a couple of weeks and then either medical or surgical as an option. There are risks with both - discuss with your EPU.

Advice is from my own experience of many miscarriages and no children. Services in your local area may differ slightly.

Best wishes Flowers

Sorry to hear this OP.

From my friends who have had similar experiences, my understanding is you need to have had 3 consecutive miscarriages.

So for example a friend of mine had 2 conservative miscarriages, then had DC, then had another 2 consecutive miscarriages and asked for a referral but they told her no. Luckily she got pregnant again and carried to term on the 3rd try (post DC1).

Good luck!

@BlessMeLord

www.tommys.org/our-research/referrals-our-clinics/referrals-our-miscarriage-clinics

The above link is for tommys miscarriage services they are accessible to NHS patients if you are in their area they will accept after 2 miscarriages. Out of area referrals after 3 miscarriages. Criteria can be seen on the link - ask your GP for a referral to them or your local clinic for recurrent miscarriages. Again your miscarriages do NOT need to be consecutive (ie in a row) for a referral therefore under the NICE guidelines (see below*) you meet the criteria for an NHS referral - I’d ask your EPU. Also if you have any known underlying health conditions (ie diabetes, thyroid issues etc) these numbers may not apply.

I found this leaflet really helpful for info re referrals - www.miscarriageassociation.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/Recurrent-Miscarriage.pdf

But remember any referral is at the discretion of the health care professional therefore discuss your concerns with them.

Best of luck for the future Daffodil

@RainbowTime the consultant at the epu suggested i speak to my gp about being referred to a gyno when i mentioned having 3 miscarriages but not in a row. I go into hospital tuesday to have the pill to remove the baby as found no heartbeat in scan again today

@BlessMeLord so sorry to hear that.

Hope everything goes smoothly tomorrow, try not to think or process things too much at this point (easier said than done I know, I’m a serial over thinker LOL). None of it ever makes sense. It’s dreadful but you’re not alone x Sad

Going in for a possible ERPC tomorrow myself as medical management doesn’t seem to have worked for me this time unfortunately.

I had 3 miscarriages last year. I was referred but both the miscarriage unit and gynaecology was closed due to Covid I was told it would be 6 months at least until I would get an appointment. I checked my blood pressure realised it was high and my gp checked my iron levels and they were low so I started on baby aspirin and pharmacy iron supplements. I got pregnant again and chalked the unit who fast tracked me for care and gave me extra hormones. It worked! I'm now 20 weeks pregnant and fingers crossed all ok!

My advice would be try and investigate the simple problems with your gp and keep the maternity unit number as if you do get pregnant again they will give you extra care and scans etc. Thinking of you, it's not easy x

@BlessMeLord I am sort of use to the momentum of it now to be honest. 6 losses, 4 in the last year, one ectopic, 2 missed miscarriages and a multitude of management for them. Still no better off with any answers and no children. It’s totally harrowing but there’s really no help. I try to keep some home when I see people’s stories like @Littlepaws18 but I’m starting to believe that this quite simply is not meant to be. I hope things go well for you @BlessMeLord.
