Blighted Ovum

Hi All

I went for an early scan yesterday - thought I was 7+5 but found out I've got a Blighted Ovum 💔

Went to EPAS today and they confirmed and gave me my options - to be honest I'm numb I don't know what to think.

Has anyone went down the natural route and just let nature proceed with the miscarriage?!

I don't know if I can actually go back into the hospital for the medical route (pills) - I'm heartbroken 😭💔 xx

@Lynne425 hi lovely. I didn’t want to read and run.

I had a natural mc at nearly 9 weeks. No previous symptoms I just started bleeding and went to hospital. As a result I didn’t require any medical management. I was told to go home and return 48 hours later for a scan to check if any tissue was left; I’d pretty much passed everything.

I’ve read in forums about ladies waiting for their miscarriage to happen. It is absolutely your choice. I’m not sure if I could wait for it to happen. I’m lucky that nature had already taken its course and I much preferred to be at home. My cycle returned to normal around 4 weeks after the bleeding stopped.

If you do decide to waiting be at home, make sure you ask for pain killers. I was prescribed codeine. I had quite bad pains and so if you have this on hand, it will be easier for you. I don’t have any experience on medical procedures sorry so I can’t comment.

All I can say is that I absolutely feel your heartache, and it’s completely normal to feel the way you do. This will be a difficult time for you but there are lots of women on these forums - they helped me so much! Take care of yourself xx

Thank you for your reply @Summersun001 I really appreciate it.

If I hadn't went for the private scan I would still be none the wiser and probably miscarried before my 12 week scan.

I am just soo unsure about the whole thing at the minute - my head saying one thing and my heart saying the other!

I think the whole extended lockdown announcement today (I'm from Scotland) had also mushed my mind which isn't helping!

I just need to sit down and think it all through again xx

@FoxtrotSkarloey

Sorry to hear of your loss! 💔 it's just numbing to be honest!

My scan showed a sac which measured 9 weeks but had no yolk or fetal pole within so looks like my egg was reabsorbed

I've booked in to get pills put in place next week if it doesn't happen naturally before hand!

To be honest I just want to curl up with my DS who will be 2 this weekend and forget it all even happened! He's bringing a smile to my face through all this and gives the best hugs - it's as if he knows it's helping 💙 xx

I had the same - diagnosed in a private scan at 9 weeks, I then had to have 2 NHS scans a week apart to confirm as they of course want to be really sure before treating you. I went for the surgical route as my main priority was getting my cycles back so I could TTC again as quickly as possible. But of course lots of people want a bit of a pause so they can process it. In the end my period didn't come for 8 weeks anyway so I'm not sure what difference it made... the surgical management was also quite uncomfortable as I had to have local anaesthetic, not general, but natural can also of course be painful with cramps etc. Just read about the options, think about what is best for you. One benefit of surgical is it tends to be the most efficient so you are less likely to need a procedure later to remove retained products - but of course it's not guaranteed with any method.

So so sorry to hear u are going through this,

I also had a blighted ovum, I had a very traumatic experience with it, and I really don't want to scare u and please rem all miscarriages are different, no one ever has the same experience,

I booked a private 10 week scan on the 23rd dec so could tell family on xmass, was told they couldn't see baby, referred to hosp 29th confirmed blighted ovum, told go home wait a week and if it doesnt happen naturally to come back, started bleeding on the 1st Jan, and bled until the 19th Jan, ended up in a&e and back at the EPU, the pain was so bad it felt like labour pains, the amount of blood loss was scary, because of covid on the day I went to a&e I was told to wait 3 hours to be seen, I soaked through my jeans and a towel beneath me, it all was so draining and seemed to just take so so long, I wish I had of been able to get medical management, I also felt the same that I wouldn't have knew until 12 week scan, I still had all the symptoms of pregnancy, it is devastating, all I can say is take it easy, be good to urself, have painkillers on hand and take as much time as u need to go through the whole process, sending hugs xo

Hi all

I had a very early scan on Friday due to pain and they found on empty gestational sac. They told me it might just be too early to see anything yet and I may have my dates wrong (I had calculated I was 6 weeks). Or they said it could be a blighted ovum. The nurse said "it could go either way" at my next scan in 2 weeks time but then went on to give me a number to call if I start bleeding and the miscarriage association website details which has made me think they are less unsure then they are implying.

Now in a horrible wait. I just wondered for those who have experienced it, did you get blood tests to confirm the loss? Also did your pregnancy symptoms continue to progress despite the loss? Or did they stay the same or disappear? My morning sickness is now kicking in which is new. It's giving me some hope but equally I know my hcg levels are still probably high even if it is a miscarriage

Am feeling very confused and upset.

Mummyto1crazy1 · 07/02/2021 10:38

I was also told that I might have my dates wrong but I was 10 weeks along, so with u only being 6 weeks then it is possible it's just too early to tell, the waiting game is horrible tho, I know how ur feeling, rem u are not alone, if u need to reach out make sure u do, I found out at 10 weeks I had an empty sac which stopped growing at 6 weeks, I still had all the symptoms of pregnancy up until about week 9, got it confirmed as a blighted ovum at 11 weeks, and it took to almost 12 weeks for the bleeding to start, the bleeding lasted 19 days and I think I've only just ovulated so know waiting on my first period since October, I really hope ur experience is not like mine and that u are just not far along yet and everything works out well, just letting u know how it worked out for me, xo

Hi @Lynne425

I had a blighted ovum in my first pregnancy. I started bleeding when I was 10 and a half weeks and had a scan with the EPU which confirmed blighted ovum. They outlined my options and as I didn’t know what to do I went home to think about it. I then started bleeding very heavily at home that day and chunks were coming out of me. I ended up in hospital overnight to have a medically managed miscarriage and then had to wait 2 cycles to ttc as my uterus wouldn’t have supported another pregnancy so quickly. I found the whole thing very traumatic and would have a D&C if I have a MMC again. I got pregnancy 2 cycles after ttc again and now have an 18 month old x

Lynne425 · 07/02/2021 18:58

Hey @Jangirl03

Thanks for sharing 💕 I would have went surgery method but they basically said it's unlikely unless I try the medical management route first due to COVID that they could offer it.
So booked in on Thursday for medical management so hopefully that will work 🤞🏻 and planning on having a quiet weekend curler in front of the TV to get me through it xx
