Ovulating after miscarriage w/ PCOS

Hello, all

I'm 8 days past the start of miscarriage bleeding, which began at about 6.5 weeks. My HCG has not declined to zero, as far as I know... it went from 117 on Monday to 112 on Wednesday. I have labs again this coming Monday. What I am wondering is if there's anyone else out there with PCOS who did not ovulate independently before miscarriage, but had a natural cycle after.

We got pregnant with the assistance of Femara. As far as I know, my cycle on Femara was the only time I ovulated in the last 12 months.

I keep hearing & reading that a lot of women are more fertile in the 3 months following a miscarriage.. but I don't know if it's reasonable to hope that this short experience with pregnancy could kickstart a natural cycle for me. I'm also wondering if the 3-month boost in fertility after miscarriage exists for women who need medication to ovulate.

Thanks very much for your thoughts.

Hi rayalah,

First of all I am so sorry for your loss, I unfortunately know exactly how you feel.

I was diagnosed with PCOS after TTC and going for private tests. I was prescribed chlomid to help me ovulate which helped me fall pregnant in March this year, but I unfortunately had a miscarriage at home at around 6 weeks. It took about 6 weeks for my first period, but after that my cycles were consistently 31/32 days when they had been going up to 47 days prior to my pregnancy. The consultant said that the chlomid had 'kick started my cycles'

We didn't try straight away, but when we decided to start trying again 6 months later we fell pregnant on the first cycle (with no medication).

I hit post too early! (this is my first post on mumsnet)

We've been very unlucky and had a missed miscarriage with the 2nd pregnancy, this time at 8.5 weeks. The NHS don't believe the two are connected as they happened at different points of the pregnancy.

Sorry this post is a mixture of positive and negative experiences, but I just wanted to share that you can fall pregnant naturally after MC with PCOS. I'm hopeful that your cycles come back, as I am with mine for TTC again when we're ready.

Thank you for your message. I’m sorry to hear about both of your miscarriages. That’s got to be a punch to the gut. Glad to hear that the Clomid helped kickstart a regular cycle for you! I seem to mostly not ovulate at all without meds, at least from tracking the last year. Here’s hoping the combination of Letrozole/femara and having briefly been pregnant help shift something for me.

Hi Rayalah,

So sorry to hear about your miscarriage. It is a really tough experience. I read your post and am in the exact same situation as you last year - I have PCOS and was able to conceive after 14 months TTC on letrozole but unfortunately had a miscarriage at around 6 weeks. I was curious to hear how everything ended up for you - did your cycles restart naturally or did you need to go back onto letrozole? Really appreciate any advice as trying to keep up hope and see what likely lies ahead for us.

Hope all is well for you :)

Hi EmilyHa,

The update since my original post is that I turned out to have an ectopic pregnancy, rather than a miscarriage. So my experience my mean something or nothing... my hCG only zeroed out on 12/31 (literally New Years Eve). I bled pretty much right when my levels dropped below 5, and bled again 18 days later, but have not ovulated. The thing is, I didn't ovulate before the pregnancy, so a return to normal for me would not include ovulation. I'm still tracking my temps and just started OPK's. It's possible I will ovulate, but I don't have any positives to report (again, though, it's only just been a month since my pregnancy hormones zeroed out).

I did decide to start Inositol this month, and have been taking a 40:1 ratio of Myo to d-chiro Inositol for just over a week. It's such a yo-yo, trying to hold out hope and imagine a positive future, and also holding the possibility that nothing works out the way you hope.

Sending you lots of love and care. I wish my answer held more answers for you!

Raya

Hi Raya,

Thanks so much for your detailed response! Appreciate you taking the time. I’m sorry to hear about your ectopic pregnancy :(, it sounds like a difficult journey and I’m sorry you had to go through that.

I also have not been ovulating naturally so I suspect I will need to go back on letrozole to do so after a month or so waiting after the mc. It’s tough having PCOS and a miscarriage as everything doesn’t work the same way as it does for others, so I guess we just need to wait and see. I’m also taking inositol, I am not sure if it makes a difference but I’m willing to do anything that doesn’t hurt at this stage!

Agreed it’s a difficult journey and I also find it hard trying to stay hopeful when not knowing what to expect. I’m just trying to take each day at a time and hopefully one day we’ll get some positive news! Sending love and hugs :)
