MMC after IVF and Cyclogest

I had a scan at 7 weeks which showed my baby had stopped growing at 6 weeks and had no heartbeat. Had a repeat scan on Monday which confirmed it so I’m now in that horrible stage of waiting for a miscarriage to happen.

I really wanted to take the surgery option as I just wanted it all over with as quickly as possible but was advised that the fertility clinic don’t like this as there’s up to an 18% chance of leaving scar tissue. As much as I want to do it anyway, we have enough issues without adding another.

I’ve had no bleeding at all and think this is because the cyclogest has been holding everything back. So I’ve stopped taking it and now waiting it out at home for nature to take its course.

I just wondered if anyone has been in a similar position and how long it took for the bleeding to start once you stopped taking the progesterone? I can’t find many similar stories and I’m finding it really tough not knowing when it will happen.

I’m sorry to everyone else who finds themselves here.

Sorry you're going through this, it's so awful. My first MC (ivf) was discovered at 9 weeks, it had stopped growing at 7ish weeks. I waited nearly a week after the scan and stopping progesterone, nothing happened so had the medical management (the pills, I was also advised not to have the surgery for the scarring possibilities). I bled on the day I had the pills. My 2nd MC (also ivf, so cruel) was earlier, I think at the 7 week scan it showed it wasn't viable, I think I started bleeding 3/4 days after stopping the progesterone. I hope it happens quickly for you, it's awful waiting for it to happen.

Thank you so much for replying and I’m so sorry to hear what you’ve been through. It’s just heartbreaking especially when you’re already feeling you’ve fought a battle before the pregnancy even began.

That’s good to know, I was planning to wait a week before I go back to them for the medication. I’ve been doing so much searching online and all the stories about the contractions and pain from the pessaries have really worried me.

I'm sorry this is happening ❤️ I have had 3 missed miscarriages, my first two passed naturally around 9 weeks. My most recent loss I was taking cyclogest to support the pregnancy but had a large bleed at 6+1, my scan a few days later showed I was on track for my dates no heartbeat 💔 I stopped the cyclogest that day and by 9+1 I still hadn't bled anymore or showed any signs of going naturally, so I booked in for medical management. Physically it was actually more manageable than my 2 natural losses where I did have contractions to pass the pregnancy but I didn't have that with the pessaries. I'd read some horrible experiences for medical management and they weren't offering surgical under general anesthetic. None of the options are one choices we want to make, sending love x

Oh @VenusStarr I’m so sorry for what you’ve been through. There’s nothing worse than those awful scans.

That’s really reassured me hearing about your experience with the pessaries thank you. There’s still no sign so looking like I might be heading down that route too.

Hi, I had an IVF MMC picked up at 10 weeks with ‘fetal demise’ estimated at 7.
Took medical management option at 12 weeks because similarly I am wary of adhesions. It failed first dose (just a tiny bleed) and I thought worked second dose, but no luck. I think the aspirin and cyclogest worked too well for me - bits of placenta still clinging on. Now going for ERPC surgery at 16 weeks.
The misoprostol process was bearable - I did ask for some codeine, but only needed a couple. Sitting on the gym ball helped with the pain. I passed most of my miscarriage tissue and blood into a bowl in the loo to monitor how it was going - without this it’s quite hard to tell. It seemed to be have gone ok, sac, clots, placenta tissue etc. and my hCg was daily dropping but still positive, and spotting after 3 weeks. EPAU were a bit too relaxed about it (‘Check again at the end of the week’) so I went for a private scan with my clinic. Wish I had pushed for a scan sooner. Do trust yourself if you feel something is wrong.
I now go into the surgery thinking ‘I tried’ so if there are complications, I won’t feel such regret. The misoprostol is a gamble. But so long as you are vigilant for blood loss and later infection, they will let you try a more conservative option first. But you have to be pretty comfortable with the bodily experience and the not knowing if it worked.

Hi, I had a very similar situation, I was 7+4 but no heartbeat and was told to stop the medication (cyclogest pessaries, lubion (also a progesterone) injections and also the oestrodial that I was taking. I stopped all of those on the Thursday and miscarried on the Saturday. I've got a scan tomorrow (which was booked before as I had had some spotting in the pregnancy) so really hope they will check everything has passed as other than some heavy bleeding and manageable pain on the Saturday the bleeding has not been very heavy and I wonder if there is some tissue left, especially as my pregnancy test is still very positive. I hope all goes well for you.
