MVA experience.

Hello everyone, I’ve had an MVA today and thought I’d share my experience.
3 weeks ago I paid for an early scan as I was getting brownish discharge and some mild cramping. Unfortunately, they found an empty pregnancy sac and I knew straight away it wasn’t going to be a successful pregnancy (I just knew it in my body.)
I then had to ring my GP to get referred to an early pregnancy unit where I had a follow up scan. I turned up had my second scan where the same thing was found but they said my sac wasn’t big enough to call it, so I had to wait another week (probably the worst part of it all, all the waiting!)
So I went along on the following Tuesday where they said the sac still wasn’t very big but they were happy to call it as there was clearly no foetus developing and I was 12 weeks at this point.

I had a conversation with the nurse who went through the options - wait for it happen naturally, medical management or an MVA. I didn’t want the first two as it had been a long drawn out 3 weeks of knowing my baby had died and just having to carry the remaining tissue around while experiencing all the usual pregnant symptoms Sad.

The procedure:
So this morning I went in for the procedure. I was told to change into a gown and they gave me diazepam, a painkiller up the bum (haha sorry!) and they they also inserted medicine into the vagina to help to open the cervix.
I had to wait about an hour and then got called into the room.
They use something to open you up, clean around, inject your cervix with a local anesthetic and then use the instrument to clear everything out. It was so quick and took around 10 minutes in total and was all over.
In terms of pain for me it did really hurt; but having a smear test also really hurt me and I had bleeding after it. I just think my cervix is determined to stay shut. It wasn’t unbearable pain for me it was literally just the muscles stretching which hurt. I couldn’t feel the injection at all and just felt cramping and mild contracting when the tissue was being removed. But it was all over so quickly so that’s a massive plus point.

After I was given toast and tea and monitored for half an hour and then allowed home. I’ve had some painful cramping since and bled like I’m on a really heavy period. Other than that I’m glad it’s all over and hopefully in 2/3weeks I’ll get a negative pregnancy test and know it will all be over.
The nurses were absolutely lovely & made a horrible experience to go through alone a lot less lonely Flowers

Anyone else whose had an MVA - what was your experience post op? How long did your bleeding and cramping last?
I feel like I’m on a really heavy painful period atm and painkillers are doing nothing to help.

Day 2:
Cramps have settled down a lot and go when I take ibuprofen and paracetamol. Bleeding is a lot less heavy too more like a period.
Hopefully it continues to settle over the next few days.

Thought I’d just do a last update,
Yesterday and today have been fine. I feel like I’m just on my period with bleeding and slight cramping.
Just hoping when I re take a pregnancy test it’s negative and I can put this whole ordeal behind me 🤞

I had an MVA 3 weeks ago - beware that the bleeding may stop and start but it's nothing to worry about! I had spotting for a few days then stopped and thought hurrah no pad, then a couple of days later had more bleeding like a light period which lasted a few days. Cramping only lasted a few days too.

My HCG was coming down anyway but it was negative on clearblue after 2 weeks (positive on FRER, but negative blood HCG so FRER must be very sensitive!)

Still have pain now on right side but not to do with the MVA because this pain started before the op.

Hope you are feeling better, you'll soon be fighting fit :) xx

@Aprildaisyx I'm sorry you have had to go through that. Thank you for sharing your experience though, I'm grateful to read about what's going to happen.

I had failed medical management 2.5 weeks ago, and following a scan the hospital have booked me in for an MVA next week. I am a little apprehensive about it so it's reassuring to read your posts.

I do have one Q - will I be ok to work the day after it?

Aprildaisyx · 08/10/2020 18:04

@pingit ah sorry to hear that the medical way didn’t work :( such a shame.
It’s okay - it did hurt at the time but felt okay after.
I had it on the Thursday and went back to work on Monday took me a few days to stop feeling crampy I personally wouldn’t have been able to work the next day but I’m a teacher so would have been on my feet and the cramping was quite painful.
See how you feel though. X

Thanks @Aprildaisyx I have a whole day of meetings (over video call) the next day but I'm hoping as I will be working from home that I'll be ok x
