Retained tissue after MVA

I had an MVA a few weeks ago and just found out it needs to be repeated as there was tissue left behind. Has this happened to anyone else and did the tissue come away the second time?

I think my body is just dysfunctional when it comes to pregnancy. I’m now in the tiny minority who have recurrent miscarriages, missed miscarriages and where surgical management doesn’t work. And it was an IVF pregnancy to start with.

I've had two MVAs (multiple losses). Some tissue was left behind both times. The consultant said my uterus was slightly oddly shaped and they did not want to be too forceful. Both times I started cramping about a week after the procedure (a few hours for 3-4 days in a row) followed by significant bleeding. I then passed the remaining tissue. First time it was about 1.5 cm, second time about 4-5 mm. It was painful, never given birth, but I thought this is what contractions must feel like. Could hardly move. First time they didn't tell me though and it got me by (very unpleasant) surprise. They pre-warned me the second time. Was given antibiotics to prevent infection and the scans after I passed the tissue were clear. Still kept spotting/having brown and yellow discharge for another 4-5 weeks until my period arrived. Do you know how much is still there? If it's small they may suggest to wait it out, or try medical management. Have you been given antibiotics considering it has been a while?

hi, i was the same, had MVA in July didnt bleed afterwards then almost 2 weeks later started to bleed but was passing clots the size of ping pong balls (could actually feel them coming out) went to A&E got told it could be an infection, then went back to early pregnancy and got an internal scan and they told me my womb was full of clots or tissue, ended up in A&E that night in absolute agony and ended up getting alot of tissue removed from neck of my cervix, my body had started miscarriage and thankfully dealt with the tissue itself. Almost 9 weeks after the baby died I am now finally clear of tissue and getting a negative test. Couldn't believe they could leave a womb full of tissue after an MVA and got told there isnt a guarantee and its only really been used since covid

@S10130928, this sounds horrific. I would call this medical negligence, there is no excuse. A little bit tissue left behind can easily happen and is normal, but in your case the person doing the procedure must have had no idea what they were doing. MVA hasn't been around since Covid, it has been around for a while. They're offering it now due to Covid as it does not require general anesthetic. Though in my personal opinion, all women should be offered the option of sedation. I'm glad you're ok now. I haven't tested just yet, will be 3 weeks after the procedure in a couple of days' time, and it's been a week since the retained tissue passed. I guess it will take a few more weeks to get a negative test.

@Wireless77 thanks for your reply, they said there is about 3cm left behind and recommend repeating the MVA as it doesn’t appear to be coming away naturally. Having the procedure on Friday.

@S10130928 that does sound horrific, you should definitely complain. I plan to complain about the 3cm piece they left in me.

@Wireless77 don't see the point the hospital im in said they have only started using it since March, noticing alot more posts on here now compared to when I looked before mine, just going to try and put it all behind me and try move forward. I found i got a negative about a week after my womb was empty so fingers crossed next time I take a test its a positive
