3rd miscarriage

Hi all, went for an early scan today should have been 8+3 and unfortunately I’ve had another missed miscarriage at 7+3. I had a missed miscarriage in February at exactly the same date. I’ve also had a chemical pregnancy in April. I’m hoping I get referred for tests now. Does anyone have any advice? I’m going to ring me EPU tomorrow to see what the process is now. Has anyone had a D&C how was it? I passed the pregnancy naturally last time and found it really traumatic. Has anyone else had 3 miscarriages and then had tests? What were you tested for? Did you go on to have any successful pregnancies? Thank you in advance xx

Hi @Sophj19 I’m really sorry for your losses Sad. It’s such a painful thing to go through, I really hope you can get some testing done and hopefully receive some answers/advice.

I don’t have experience of recurrent mc myself but just wanted to write as I don’t like reading and not replying. I have found a lot of comfort in sharing with other ladies who have gone through similar experiences. I had a mmc 3 weeks ago and was given the options of medical management, wait to mc naturally or an MVA procedure which is done under local anaesthetic. The d and c was not being done at my local hospital at that time due to covid. If mva is an option for you it is definitely something to consider and I can share more details with you if needed.

Hopefully more ladies will comment who can offer advice on recurrent mc and the d and c procedure. Wishing you all the best and hoping all goes smoothly for you in whatever option you decide on xxx

I am sorry for your loss. I am also undergoing by third missed miscarriage now and try to do it naturally. I had d&c for my first miscarriage and found that I am very weak afterwards, the surgery didn’t clean everything and I had remains came out naturally two months later. It took me almost a year to conceive again. My second miscarriage happened naturally and I found my body and emotional heal much quicker, I conceived again after one cycle. I guess is really down to personal experience and preference, but we prefer to go to natural route again this time. The waiting is difficult. I am hesitate to use medic as the chance for the need of surgery could be higher then natural.

I'm so sorry about your loss.
I had a D&C on Friday after my twins stopped growing at just under 10 weeks. This was my 3rd MC. My doctor recommended a d&c this time.

The d&c was fine and I'm glad not to have had to go through the pain of a natural MC again. I found the procedure ok and have only had minimal spotting since and no pain, just the odd cramp. I was very tired afterwards but felt fine the next day.

The 'remains' of my pregnancy have been sent off for genetic testing to see if they can find a cause and I have been referred to the recurrent miscarriage clinic. I have been told that if I get pregnant again before I get an appointment I should start aspirin 75mgs and get an early appointment at the EPU so I can be started on progesterone.

I hope your d&c goes as well as it can. Look after yourself x

I’m so sorry for your losses, thank you to all of you that have replied. I’ve got my first appointment with the EPU Tomorrow and then have to wait a week for another appointment and scan before they’ll consider treatment. At the moment I’ve had no bleeding at all so am thinking I will need it and am torn between tablets and a d&c. I have to go to my appointment alone tomorrow although my mum will be waiting in my car for me outside. Feel lost and empty and just want this to be over with ASAP xxx

That's awful that you have to wait so long.
My husband wasn't allowed to any of my appointments except for my D&c. I really needed him with me ☹️ but the hospital staff refused and just put me in a room on my own when I got emotional.
It's so hard at the moment.
I really hope that they speed up your appointments. The waiting is so stressful.

Sending you a big hug for tomorrow X x

Just wanting to wish you luck OP in your appointment, hopefully you can find comfort in the nurses, in my experience they are all very kind and explain things clearly to you, and will make sure you are feeling alright at all times - doing these things alone is rubbish but I promise you it'll be alright Thanks

Northernsoul90 · 01/07/2020 14:22

Wishing you luck OP for your appointment Flowers. Hope all goes well. xxx

Hi all thank you very much for your support. So today I had my NHS scan to confirm at it turns out the heart stopped beating at 8 weeks and 1 day. Which for some reason made me feel a bit better knowing it wasn’t exactly the same date as last time. The private scan must have measured me wrong. So now I’ve got to wait until next Wednesday for another scan to see if I need treatment. Still feeling pregnant though so think I probably will. If the tissue can be tested then I’m going for a d&c. If not I’m going to have the medical management at home.
@Quail15 it’s so difficult isn’t it, it’s hard enough going through a miscarriage but to be on your own in the scan and appointments makes it feel much worse. I am sorry for your loss x
@GingerCalico thank you, the nurses were lovely and very understanding x
@Northernsoul90 thank you xx

The nurse told me that a recurrent miscarriage clinic is opening in a hospital not to far from me (it’s shocking how few we have in Wales) and that I have to wait two weeks(not sure why, I forgot to ask but maybe it isn’t open yet) and then my go can refer me. I feel very positive about this xx

I didn't want to read and run but I know how you are feeling.

I had an early scan a few weeks ago and saw a heartbeat, I relaxed a little! Yesterday I had my 12 week scan to find the sac completely empty?!

No bleeding, no cramping, no warning!

Pregnancy symptoms strong as ever!!

I'm back at the hospital for another scan tomorrow and need to decide on option that is right for me. This is my second miscarriage this year unfortunately, last baby was lost 5-6weeks.

My options appear to be naturally, the tablet form or the manual vacuum under local anaesthetic.

The D&C under a general is not an option at the moment due to Covid.

Keen to hear more on the MV procedure.

Sorry your going through this xx

@LynzP85 I’m so sorry for your loss. I have to decide too- I rang the EPU to clarify today and basically if I haven’t passed the pregnancy after my next scan Wednesday I can wait for it to happen, I could have medication to make it happen stay in hospital for 30mins then come home or have a d&c. She said they are trying to avoid d&cs because of Covid. Because it’s my 3rd they might be able to send it away for testing. If they can and I decide on the tablets then I’ll have to stay in hospital while I pass the pregnancy alone. I really don’t want to do that so think if they will do testing I’ll have a d&c but if they won’t be able to test then I really don’t know what to do- in quite worried the tablets won’t work xxxx

Hi @LynzP85 I’m so sorry for your loss and that you are having to make this decision ❤️.

I was in the same situation as you in that I couldn’t have the d and c due to covid but I went ahead and had the mva procedure done. I will post my experience of it below to give you an idea, it was definitely the best option for me and I don’t regret it at all. xxx

Northernsoul90 · 02/07/2020 20:42

I had a private scan at 8 weeks that showed I had a blighted ovum which was a massive shock as I was extremely sick and felt very pregnant with no mc symptoms. After going to the EPU and having the mc confirmed I decided to go for the MVA and I am really glad I did. I was still throwing up right up until the procedure was done and this subsided almost immediately after which was one of the main reasons I wanted the mva as I couldn’t handle feeling pregnant when I knew I had lost the baby. The nurses were wonderful - really supportive and kind as was the consultant who did the procedure. I was given some painkillers (paracetamol and ibuprofen) and pessaries to loosen my cervix before the mva. I was then taken for the procedure about an hour later. In the room my legs were in stirrups and gel was inserted around my cervix followed by an injection into the cervix (not all women need the injection as the gel is sufficient) which was the local anaesthetic. The injection stung a little but nothing too bad. I’m not going to sugar coat and say that the procedure didn’t hurt because for me it did, but the pain was manageable and it didn’t last long! I found the suction to be the worst part as it was quite painful for me, I had gas and air throughout which the consultant and the nurse encouraged me to have. Every woman is different though and will experience different levels of discomfort, some women will have hardly any pain at all. I was told I could ask to stop at any point for a break but I just tried to get through it in one go as I wanted it over with. All in all the whole thing didn’t last longer than 15 minutes from inserting the speculum to getting dressed afterwards. I felt a little light headed and faint after I was sat up but this quickly subsided. Within an hour I could go home - the nurses will just want to make sure you have had a wee before you go. I was allowed my husband in for the procedure so he could hold my hand and reassure me. There was also a nurse, the consultant and a junior doctor in the room. Once I was home I had quite bad period type pains for 2 days (needed cocodamol) which eased off to mild pain over the next few days. I really didn't have much bleeding after other than red blood for the first 2 days which turned into dark brown/black spotting and small clots. The bleeding stopped completely after 2 weeks. All my pregnancy symptoms went almost immediately which as I said I wanted as I was finding it distressing still being unable to eat and throwing up etc. I am glad I chose this option as I didn’t want to wait to miscarry as I was told this was unlikely to happen naturally for me and I knew that whatever option I chose I could still need the mva anyway. I hope that this has given you some insight/reassurance. If you’ve got any questions at all please ask xxx

Northernsoul90 · 02/07/2020 20:47

@Sophj19 it’s such a hard decision trying to do what is best. If I was you I would be inclined to go for the d and c because I found that I just wanted it over with so that I could move on. I was worried I would take the tablets and they either wouldn’t work or the mc would take a long time. It is a very personal decision though with pros and cons to each. I don’t have any experience of the d and c procedure myself so can’t comment specifically on that but I think that is what I would do. Whatever decision you make I hope that you are okay and you are being looked after at home xxx

LynzP85 · 02/07/2020 21:07

The D&C isnt available during Covid at my hospital unfortunately which is why they are now offering MVA.
I’ve started to get some brown spotting so I’m wondering if things are slowing starting to happen.

Will see how things go after my scan tomorrow and I’ll decide over the weekend I think.

Thanks is for the above info. Very helpful.
