Migraines and miscarriages

Hi all,

Just wanting some advice and thoughts. I'm currently going through my second miscarriage. We are completely broken as we have been TTC #1 for a long time. This was an early one and the one before was ectopic. I know you need to have 3 before they investigate but I just wanted to ask if anyone has had any experience with migraine and miscarriages?

I have suffered from them for years and each time I have started to miscarry I have been really unwell with a migraine. Has anyone had this? I know I might be clutching at straws and some times we just dont know why these things happen but I just wanted to ask in case?

Thanks x

So sorry about your mc's.

I've never heard of a link before but I suffer migraines and have had several miscarriages.

I usually suffer more during pregnancy with all the hormones etc. Not sure if migraines could cause the miscarriage though. But I'm not a doctor.

I would mention it to your GP next time you see them.

Really sorry to hear about your miscarriage...I've just been diagnosed with an ectopic and very much like you have also had a miscarriage. After the birth of my daughter in 2017 my migraines got progressively worse, I was having 3-4 severe attacks a week. My doctor always said it was due to my hormone levels fluctuating and that it would take time for them to settle.

I may be wrong but I reckon your hormone levels will probably be something to do with it. Sending love xx

I had period related migraines which usually stop while I’m pregnant. During my second pregnancy, which ended in an MMC, I had a really weird migraine at work. Got the aura and dizziness but no pain, once the aura went I was fine again. I didn’t think a great deal of it at the time but looking back I always think it would have been around the time that the baby died.

Hi,

I'm sorry for your losses. It's very hard. I don't know of any proven link, but to my knowledge:

  • there's a link between migraine with aura and stroke risk (via blood clotting disorders). This is why you shouldn't take the combined pill if you suffer migraines with aura.
  • there's a link between blood clotting issues and miscarriage

I personally had two MMC prior to a successful pregnancy. I did see a private doctor who recommended I start the following treatment

  • baby aspirin daily
  • thyroxine (I had an under active thyroid)
  • high dose folate

I'm pretty sure the thyroxine was the main factor in making a successful pregnancy in my situation, but I still take baby aspirin daily now and haven't had a migraine since I started.

All the best x

So sorry about your loss and the pain you're going through 😞

As others have said, it's to do with the fluctuation in hormones which can cause migraines, just like during/before period.

@Harrysfeet if you don't mind me asking, do you know the reason to your last msc? I had a late miscarriage in November, and am wondering if its something to worry about hence I ask..

Thanks for your replies everyone Star I might look into aspirin

I'm sorry for your MCs Sad

@Harrysfeet yes I had loads of testing too and recently found out I had an ecoli infection, which must've happened after my waters went at 19 weeks. And yes, everything came back normal for me too. They normally test mothers for clotting after.

We reached out to Incompetent Cervix group on Facebook which is run by Ciarda who put me in touch with a consultant. He went through everything and the possible causes. It's sad to say my local team did not. Although I had lovely midwife support.

Maybe you can reach out to that group and get someone to talk over? It definitely helps to put your worries aside for the future.

Hugs x

So I had a migraine on Friday night at 5pm and started bleeding that night. (My scan on Monday said no heartbeat) I’ve mentioned it at the epu but they just said it’s just a coincidence. It’s frustrating that they shrugged it off when to me it seems an obvious link, even if it’s just a way of my body telling me there’s something wrong it frustrates me that it just gets ignored.
