MVA

Hi, I had an MVA yesterday and I'm just a bit confused about bleeding. The nurse told me i would bleed for 7-10 days but since I've had it done I've been lightly spotting and that's it. Obviously I'm aware it could get worse (!) but just wondered if anyone has any experiences of this? Also, I wasn't advised about when I could resume TTC....how long did you wait?

TIA Smile

Hi @RJ44, afraid I have no advice as also had my MVA yesterday but wanted to say that I too have had hardly any bleeding and haven’t had any cramps or anything either. I’m choosing to believe it just means they’ve done a good job but also aware it could get worse!

In terms of TTC I wasn’t told anything but have read that you should wait two weeks or so (and definitely after the bleeding has stopped) before having sex but then you can TTC as soon as you like, though it’s recommended you wait until you’ve had a period just for dating.

Hope you’re doing ok! Xx

Ladies i had an MVA 3 weeks ago and had barely any bleeding afterwards. I had bleeding only on wiping after going to the toilet that lasted 10days. A small consolation in the grand scheme of have a MC i suppose. Had the odd minor cramping too. It was definitely the right choice for me. Mentally allowed me to 'move on' as my body was not suffering. 3 weeks on ive had a neg PT test and just waiting for period. Hope you both continue with mininal bleeding. Oh and sorry for your losses but try and keep positive x

@Chopsuey1 That’s really reassuring, thank you. I’m so sorry for your loss but wish you the best of luck in moving forward xx

I’ve had two MVAs in the last few years. After each I bled a fair bit for the first half an hour, then only very light bleeding for the next few days really.

Hi hope you dont mind but can you tell me how you found this procedure, i have one tues and im so nervous. Although I've been talked through it and it seems really straightforward im struggling with anxiety. It the pain im most scared about.

SkyBlue20 · 10/05/2020 12:34

Hi @shelly0910, so sorry you are going through all of this. I was SO worried before my MVA, I really didn’t want it, but I can honestly tell you that my experience was good - the pain was nowhere near what I was imagining and it was over so quickly. Obviously it can vary from person to person but I found focusing on breathing in the gas and air with the deepest breaths possible and talking to the nurse really helped.
For me, the most painful part was when they open the cervix but it was honestly manageable. The injections in to your cervix, well I didn’t notice the first couple then the last one there was a bit of a sting but again, over super quickly and not as bad as I thought it would be.
The whole thing was over in 10mins, I had a cup of tea and a chocolate muffin five minutes after that and was discharged around an hour later.
Having been so terrified beforehand, it was nowhere near what I expected and I would definitely choose it again should I ever need to (hopefully not!)
Let me know if you have any specific questions, I’m happy to answer as many as I can - know there isn’t too much info out there as was searching for it myself last week.
Xxx

Shelly0910 · 10/05/2020 12:43

Thanks for your reply. There definitely seems theres not much info on it and what I have read has filled me with dread. They have said they don't offer g&a but I do have a strong pain killer before so hopefully that's all I need. Its just the unknown and having to go on my own. Im know I'll be fine I just need to relax a little more x

Hi @Shelly0910 I've had an MVA recently too. The procedure itself was ok - the nurses were so lovely and really try to keep your mind off what is going on. Like @SkyBlue20 I couldn't feel the first few injunctions but the last one stung a bit. The procedure hurt me a little more than I expected but I was tensing the entire time and I think that's probably why. Once they took the speculum out again it was instant relief! I then had period pain kinda pain for an hour or so and that was it. I bled a bit on the day and then I've had very mild spotting (like, once a day) since and I'm just over a week from the procedure.
I'm so sorry you're going through this, it's so tough especially when you have to go alone, but the nurses do try their best to keep you at ease.

I had an MVA 4 weeks ago now. My experience was slightly different in that I had no injections into the cervix. I only had instillagel (anaesthetic gel) squeezed into the cervix. The Doctor explained to me that that the injections can be quite uncomfortable and often not needed (i'm only telling you this in case the injection is not offered and you dont panic). Honestly, the procedure was absolutely fine. I was so scared and I dont tolerate pain well at all but this was bearable. It felt like little pinched to your pelvis internally. The gas and air was more of a distraction than actually needed I think...
A song started playing on the radio when the dr started and I remember when it had finished the song was still playing. Home after an hour and having dinner.
Minimal bleeding for 10days after (just when wipe, not really on pads), and minimal cramping. Allowed me to 'move on' psychologically as body had dealt with it if you understand what I mean.
I'm sorry your going through this. But a month down the line and I'm ready to ttc again and not scarred form my experience x

Shelly0910 · 10/05/2020 14:00

Thanks, ive read the more anxious you are the more pain you feel but its easier said then done i need to remember its quick and i can go home quite soon after. I've met two nurses who will be with me and they are lovely, although one has told me i won't feel any pain but can't help thinking that I will X

Shelly0910 · 10/05/2020 14:07

Thanks thats really reassuring. I know I'll be having injections which don't both me tbh i deal with pain quite well (i think) had 2 homebirths unaided so I really hope this will be a walk in the park. Its just the unknown and putting yourself in quite a vulnerable position. Ive also been told that gentleness is key and my consultant is lovely and gentle I just want it over and ive had to wiat a week which has been far to much time to read into the worst things. Xx

Shelly0910 · 10/05/2020 14:08

I also know i won't be offered gas and air but having strong pain killers before so hopefully that takes any edge off it x

SkyBlue20 · 10/05/2020 15:11

I agree with @Chopsuey1 that I think the gas and air was more of a distraction that anything else. I got given two paracetamol and one codeine beforehand (they usually give two codeine but I got really sick when they gave me two at my medical management - which failed hence the MVA - so I only had one) and tbh my doctor got delayed so it ended up being three hours after I had them that I had the MVA and I was worried they’d be wearing off but like I say, absolutely fine. Glad you have good nurses - I had a lovely one who chatted to me and let me squeeze her hand and she was invaluable. I’ve also heard it’s not as bad if you’ve had natural births before so that’s in your favour ☺️
I had cramps immediately afterwards which were uncomfortable but only lasted about 15mins and then I’ve hardly bled since and haven’t had any pain (it’s been nine days now since I had it).

Good luck, you’ll be absolutely fine xxx

Chopsuey1 · 10/05/2020 15:35

Oh youll be fine if you have had 2 previous births. I've had 2 children before so didnt find it too uncomfortable. I think having a small cervix may be why some woman find it more painful. Its probably wrong for the nurse to say it's not painful but definitely not as bad as you think.

Shelly0910 · 10/05/2020 22:56

Thanks for you msg means a lot i keep thinking the worse of it all bloody anxiety 😢 nurse was probably just trying to calm me down and reassure me. She was lovely took me into the treatment room to show me so I knew what to expect on the day. X

Bubble77bee · 11/05/2020 20:08

My MVAs were both manageable in terms of pain. I've since given birth, and the MVAs were a walk in the park in comparison! I didn't have gas and air for the MVA - just took paracetamol and ibuprofen beforehand. I think my first one took about 20mins, and the second one took 10 mins. The dilation of the cervix was a bit painful, and they also warned me that I would feel cramps when the procedure was almost over, which I did. Hope it goes ok for you. I don't have any other miscarriage procedures to compare it to, but for me I was glad to know that I wouldn't be waiting to miscarry naturally at home, and also glad to avoid a general anaesthetic.

SkyBlue20 · 11/05/2020 22:31

Good luck tomorrow @Shelly0910, please do let us know how it goes. Will be thinking of you 💕
