How long until you got a negative pregnancy test?

I’m about 10 days post miscarriage. I did take a test and it’s still positive. I was 13 weeks pregnant when the empty sac was found. How long does it take to go negative? I know they told me to wait three weeks but I dunno. I just want it all over.

Hiii!
So sorry to hear you've been through this.
I was only around 7 weeks when I miscarried at the end of last month. From the very first day of light spotting it took 3 weeks and 1 day for my test to become negative just on a cheap test. My HCG was dropping very slowly though considering it was very low to begin with.

But I have read it depends on how high your hcg was at the time of miscarrying and how many weeks.

Fingers crossed you get your negative soon 🤞🏻 I felt it was a turning point for me (although only yesterday! But I was so relieved it was finally over.)

Sorry for your loss op. Mine was 2 weeks until the test was negative.

fellyjish · 19/04/2020 17:23

I think about 4 weeks for me, I bled for ages (not very heavy but continuous).

Epu's tell you to do a pregnancy test 3 weeks after you miscarry. If that's positive they will usually scan you to check for any retained products - most times there isn't any and it's just takes a little more time for hormones to drop.

onlyreadingneverposting8 · 19/04/2020 17:28

At 10 days post mc you don't need to worry about it being positive still.

anon0704 · 19/04/2020 20:31

Thanks. I wasn't worried at this early stage. I guess part of me was hoping I'd see a negative and know it was over. I'm getting some spotting, but it's mostly finished now.

4 weeks for me.

Frankincense88 · 21/04/2020 08:43

I'm about 14 days post miscarriage now and just tested this morning and it's still positive, albeit very faint. Tempted to give it another week but the EPU said to ring if I was still testing positive 2 weeks after. I really want to avoid going into hospital if I can though. If some of you are saying it took you 3/4 weeks to get a negative test that's more reassuring.

Sophfr17 · 21/04/2020 09:27

Hi, when i had my termination at 14w, it took 11 weeks to get a negative test (got my periods after 13 weeks), simply because hcg level at 14w is very high.
However, after my miscarriges at 6w, hcg level went back to 0 in about 7-10 days.
After my aspiration at 8w, it took 4 weeks to go back to 0. So, it all depends on how far you are in the pregnancy.

anon0704 · 22/04/2020 13:56

They told me to test at 3 weeks. I was 13 weeks when I found out it was an empty sac.

Does anyone know how long it usually takes to get a negative text
when you've have a missed misscriage?

Im curious if hcg levels are likely to take longer to reduce as our body's were unaware?

I had to start the home medical management process over the weekend and like you I think it will help me emotionally once I have a negative test. xxxx

onlyreadingneverposting8 · 22/04/2020 16:32

@mrs04 No - it won't take any longer generally. Even with a mmc the body would eventually realise and expel the failed pregnancy. Indeed it's always an option to wait for this to happen. When I waited for a natural mc it was 5 weeks from finding out to actually miscarrying. Once the sac is passed the mc is officially over and hormones start to return to normal levels.

peperethecat · 23/04/2020 13:30

@mrs04 I don't think there is a correlation between whether it's a missed miscarriage and how long your HCG takes to go down. I'm not even sure it has much to do with how high your HCG was when you miscarried. What I do know is that your body does know you've had a miscarriage and stops producing HCG even if your uterus doesn't get the message and start to bleed.

When I had my natural miscarriage at 6 weeks last summer everything happened spontaneously and my HCG was very low. I got my first beta done a week after the bleeding started when I got back from my holiday and it was only 250, but it took another three weeks or so to get back down to zero.

When I had my missed miscarriage at 7-8 weeks I think my HCG must have been over 100,000 at its peak. I got a beta done a few days after the ultrasound (when the embryo had already stopped developing a week or so beforehand) and it was at 96,000. Nine days later it was already down to 55,000 on the morning I took the misoprostol, even though I'd had no outward symtoms of miscarriage at all and hadn't started bleeding yet. So my body definitely knew the embryo had died even though I didn't start bleeding spontaneously.

peperethecat · 23/04/2020 13:32

Oh and it took about five weeks to go from 96,000 to zero. So not that much longer than it took me to go from 250 to zero the previous time really.

anon0704 · 23/04/2020 14:35

Thanks for the input :-) I'm wondering why they told me three weeks to test? Hmm...

peperethecat · 23/04/2020 14:38

I don't know, maybe they think that's the average time it'll take to get a negative test, or that if someone is still testing very strongly positive three weeks later then they might need some follow up.

I would imagine that if you call them and say it's been three weeks and you're still getting a positive test they'd probably tell you to give it another week or two and then if it's still positive to come in for a scan to check for retained tissue.

CamillaEsther · 24/04/2020 08:59

I tested yesterday 4 weeks after medical management and I was still getting a positive. I found out about the MMC at a 10 week scan and the baby had no heartbeat and measured 7.5 weeks. We had seen a heartbeat at the 7 week scan and all looked positive back then. The EPU asked me to attend for a test and scan yesterday morning. Their test showed a negative result and the scan showed no remaining pregnancy tissue. They concluded that my First Response test was more sensitive than their test and my HCG is likely to be around 20 and should hit zero in a few days. It can be a very long slog for some and at a time when you just want it over with, the days and weeks of emotional upset can take its toll. Please take care of yourself and your partner and allow family and friends to help where possible. Much love to everyone here xx

anon0704 · 29/04/2020 20:53

Three weeks after mc and I got a positive, but it took a bit to appear, almost the whole three minutes of the test, and it was on one of the medical grade ones they use. So, I'm gonna consider it a good sign and keep monitoring.

I finally got a negative test on Monday (3 weeks post MMC) but still no sign of period. Hopefully my body is starting to recover now and things can begin getting back to 'normal'. Thoughts to everyone experiencing this at such a worrying and uncertain time x

tryingtimes20 · 30/04/2020 09:34

@Frankincense88 thank you for sharing, and I'm glad for you everything is moving in the right direction. I'm two weeks post-op as of yesterday and still getting a positive on 10mIU HPT, but it is definitely fading - hopefully next week it will be gone.

From what I have read, I wouldn't expect to see your period until at least 4+ weeks out - the actual MC event (whether this was natural, medicated or surgical) essentially acts as CD1 of the new cycle, but it's not unusual for your first period to be delayed.

Frankincense88 · 30/04/2020 09:39

@tryingtimes20 that's interesting to know, thank you. This hasn't happened to me before (1st MC 1st PG) and there's so much conflicting advice. Before I was bang on every 28days with my cycle - even able to time it to the hour. I've read lots of women have problems with their cycles afterwards too so fingers crossed all is well 🤞🏼

tryingtimes20 · 30/04/2020 09:54

@Frankincense88 so sorry for you, this was my first pregnancy too :( Sending you good luck re. your cycle returning to normal, I'm also hoping the same for myself!

Frankincense88 · 30/04/2020 11:19

@tryingtimes20 you too my lovely 💕 good luck for whenever you decide the time is right to try again xx

Frazzlerock · 30/04/2020 11:29

4 weeks for me (at least one of my MMC) and that was after having surgical management
