Prolonged physical recovery following miscarriage surgery

We found out at our 12 week scan that our baby stopped developing at 6 weeks. As there had been no sign of miscarrying naturally we opted for surgery. This was in the beginning of Oct. I've had no bleeding at all since the surgery. My hormone levels returned to normal in Dec. I still haven't had a period, instead every 4 weeks (starting just before Xmas) I've been experiencing 2 weeks of intense pain that can take my breath away. I have been told that it can take some people 6 months to get periods back and that I need to wait but this pain is making it difficult to work, regular pain relief doesn't do much. I have a doctors appointment this week but I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced this?

I'm sorry for your MC. Are you sure you don't have an infection? Two weeks of intense pain sounds unusual. I've had 4 mcs and never experienced this. Talking to a doctor sounds an excellent idea.

Thank you for your reply. I have no other signs of infection, no discharge just pain. Should I be looking out for anything else?

@lyn84 I'm sorry you're going through this. I too had surgery for a MMC in December. My periods returned 4.5 weeks post surgery even when hcg was still detected in my system.

What you're experiencing does not sound right. I don't want to frighten you but it might be worth talking to your GP about ashermans. It's scarring of the uterus which causes symptoms similar to what you're experiencing - lack of periods but pain around the time you would normally expect your period. It might be nothing to worry about at all and your body may just be taking some time to settle back down but from what I know about ashermans (and I'm not an expert or have any experience myself I just did some research) the sooner it's caught, the easier it is to treat quickly so it might be worth mentioning as a precaution. However, it is reportedly a very rare complication from surgery so please don't panic.

Hope that helps a little. Thanks

Thank you @GoldenBauble. I have had a look at this and it does sound similar. My appointment is in the morning so I'll make sure to mention it. Thank you for your help and I'm so sorry we're all going through this, it's horrendous

I hope you get sorted @Lyn84. How did your gp appointment go?

Lyn84 · 30/01/2020 10:09

@GoldenBauble the GP was helpful, booked me in for a gynae appointment which I had this morning . They have taken a swab to check for any infection and have requested an ultrasound. In the meantime I've been given stronger pain relief. Fingers crossed some progress can be made. Thank you for your help
