MMC - no medical advice

Hi

I was meant to be 12 weeks+3days on Saturday, however I had a private scan, as I wasn’t feeling right and had light spotting and my nhs scan wasn’t for another 5 days.

At the scan I was told the baby was only showing as 6 weeks and 5 days and the sac was 8 weeks and 3 days. Therefore a mmc.

As it was the weekend, the only option for help was calling 111, which after an 11 hour wait they phoned back and said don’t worry you are having a miscarriage, you will have a heavy period.

I have now had proper bleeding, sometimes light sometimes heavy.

So yesterday, I phoned epu, as thought perhaps I need a scan to check everything is coming out correctly and I am doing best I can be, however the receptionist on the phone was just rude saying I wasn’t a patient and nothing to do with them. I phoned gp up and he confirmed by phone that yes it’s a miscarriage and it will sort it self out.

Is this all correct that there is no support or follow up for mmc, as I feel like medically there is something missing.

Sorry for my rant, just really confused.

Hi @stephS1984 Sorry you are in this situation too. I had a MMC in November also picked up at a private scan when I should have been almost 10 weeks. The advice I was given was to go straight to my gp for a referral to epu as they won't see you without gp referring.

I was seen by epu the next day who confirmed there was no heartbeat and went through my options with me. As my baby had just stopped developing a few days before my body hadn't recognised anything at that point and there were no signs of me starting to miscarry naturally so I opted for surgery which I had a week later (and still no signs at all of the miscarriage starting to happen). I think as things have already happened for you with the bleeding that is possibly why they don't feel they need to see you.

The only follow up advice I was given was if the bleeding lasted more than 3 weeks, was really heavy or I was passing a lot of clots I needed to return as it may indicate retained tissue. I was also told to do a pregnancy test after 3 weeks as if it was positive this could also indicate retained tissue. Mine was still showing as a faint positive after 4 weeks so epu did do a blood test which showed I still had some hcg in my system but 5 days later my period arrived anyway.

I hope that helps a little. If you're worried or concerned definitely go back to your GP.

Definitley not right lovely, I had the same and a private scan confirmed a probably MMC and I was similar time along than you and it was not just a heavy period.....I ended up needing emergency surgery from the bleeding.

You need to ask your GP to refer you to your EPU to check that the miscarriage is complete.

I am so sorry for you loss and so sorry that you havent been treated in a good way :(

Hi @GoldenBauble and @Anny27

Thanks for your responses. So I had a scan booked for yesterday and the midwife said to go to it. Unfortunately I wasn’t scanned, as I use a university teaching/ research hospital, I had booked a scan to be part of research and therefore they couldn’t scan me for anything but the research.

However, they were amazing and got me an appointment for today and I had an internal scan, which showed that everything is still there despite of my bleeding, I am being given the medication on Monday if it hasn’t passed by then xx

@StephS1984 having just been through this myself I opted for an erpc. I couldn't stand the waiting around and the pain at home, being scared to go to the toilet etc. Is somebody with you? I think they're being too blase about this

Hi @toomanyleggings

I’m currently at home, my husband is only 15 mins away if I need him. The waiting is annoying and frustrating- I’m a kinda lets get on with it kinda girl. I have loads of support from amazing family and friends.

The mental side of it, I’ve processed it quite well and I found writing all my thoughts and feelings down from the past week have really helped.

I know when it finally happens it’s going to be scary and shocking, but have been preparing myself as best that I can so I am ready and got supplies in.

Going for walks in my village is helping, it’s close to home, gets me out and fresh air and also brings on more bleeding than just sitting around.

I would push for a scan with your EPU just to make sure there’s no left over tissue from your miscarriage. I had a scan 10 days after my natural miscarriage just to make sure there was nothing left as it could cause infections.
I’m so sorry you’re going though this, the support from the doctors sound shocking too.

Sending lots of love.

I felt something wrong last Saturday as well. Continuous spotting. I went to A&E, waited four hours to be checked by a doctor. He booked a scan with the Emergency Gynaelogy unit on Monday but I had natural miscarriage after I came home on early Sunday morning. The scan only shows I have thick lining and I was booked for another check up scan two weeks later. The sonographer reassured me they will help me and make sure I am clear. I read from the information sheet on their wall that this is not a walk in service and you need to be referred by GP or A&E. My original 12 weeks scan was scheduled on 14th January and the reception told me it is for 'pregnant women' only and have to cancel mine.
