Surgical management - what's it really like?

Hello, I'm back on this topic once again!

I had a laparoscopy a few weeks ago for a suspected ectopic that wasn't there, a few weeks later my gestational sac was empty so I had medical management for a miscarriage 2 weeks ago.

I'm still passing a lot of clots and a scan yesterday showed my womb lining is still very thick and there is some fluid in there so I've been advised to have surgical management in a couple of days.

Realistically, what is it like? I found the medical management really awful, I had to go back to hospital because of the bleeding and I was in a lot of pain. Will it be simar after the operation or will most of the blood come out during? How long does it take to recover?

Thank you

Hi really sorry you are going through such a horrible time.

I had surgery 2 and a half weeks ago as my first option so don’t know what medical management is like. After the surgery the bleeding wasn’t too heavy and lasted about 2 weeks. The cramping the first night wasn’t great but think that was also as the general anaesthetic wore off. A couple of days with a hot water bottle as my new best friend but physically I don’t feel it took too long to recover.

I hope it all goes ok for you and you can start to heal both physically and mentally soon. xx

@GoldLeafTree
Sorry you've had to go through this. I managed my first two naturally and decided in September when I was faced with my 3rd to opt for surgical. I don't cope very well in hospital situations but I found surgical management ok. The worst part of it really is just the anaesthetic. Made me a little dizzy coming around and for two days I felt very sleepy.

In terms of bleeding I had very very little after. And the main source of pain was just the day I had the surgery. Like bad Period pains and feeling a little tender.

The hospital staff were very caring. If you are wondering about anything specific please just ask because there will be many people on here including myself that could hopefully answer anything you need to know. You'll need someone to be with you after surgery overnight.

Recovery from the surgery was much quicker I thought than natural. I went back to work a week after surgery. Mentally it might have been quite soon but physically I was ok apart from feeling a little weak.

Hope your doing ok. It's not easy.
Xx

Surgical management was the best option for me, though I was terrified before it happened. I bled for two weeks and had some cramping for a few days after but I was generally okay. The emotional recovery was harder than the physical.

I had surgical management. Found it a bit scary because of the GA and it feels like a 'big deal' being part of the operating theatre part of the hospital but the recovery was fine. Sore with some cramps the first day but very little bleeding after. I was too worried about the amount of blood from medical to go for that option.

I had this 3 times. It's not pleasant, but nothing to be scared of really. You have a general anaesthetic, you wake up with bad period pain. I honestly don't remember whether I bled after, but definitely not worse than a normal period. Then when they are happy you're over the anaesthetic you go home. No after effects that I remember, and you know everything is done and dusted. I think you are supposed to wait for your next period before ttc again. The worst thing by far was the fact I lost the babies, the actual mechanics of it wasn't so bad.
