Multiple miscarriages and tests

Hello I am wondering If anyone has ever been tested after having a miscarriage. And if so what did they test for?

I have read up but can only find they will only investigate after 3 miscarriages.

The nhs will not test after 1 miscarriage as it is so common and most women will have a successful 2nd pregnancy.
Tests are offered after 3 miscarriages as it is then more likely that something is wrong. Unfortunately they still only offer limited tests.
If you want testing before 3 or more comprehensive tests you will probably need to go private.

Do you know what they test for though? And what happens if the tests come back that there is a problem?

There was a scan to check the shape of my uterus, the thickness of lining and if the ovaries look ok.
There were blood tests to check for a blood clotting issue and just general health issues.
And as I had surgery for the last mmc they were able to test the baby for chromosome issues.
I didn't have any issues so don't know how most of it would be 'fixed'. But I know the blood clotting can be easily resolved with medication.
I have read that if you have private testing you will get offered more than that.

Ok thank you. I had my second miscarriage a week ago at 10 weeks. My partner and I both have children from previous relationships and I am struggling to understand why I miscary.

He was speaking with his work colleague the other day and he had mentioned that he and his wife went through the same. They had blood tests and found they both carried the same antibodies and that what was causing the miscarriages. My partner couldn't remember if he said they had treated but they do now have a child.

It's hard isnt it, sometimes not knowing makes me wonder and knowing but not being able to do anything is worse.

I'm ready to start trying again when we are allowed, I have to have the surgical removal. But my partner doesn't want me to go through all that again. But I also dont want to become obsessed with trying.

@Guest1233 I'm very sorry to hear about your losses. I had one back in April, and because of my mums lupus have managed to get my gp to run auto immune blood tests. Neither me or him expected them to be positive but they were. There is a link between auto immune issues and miscarriage. They, upon fining the positive results did some further tests and I see a rheumatologist tomorrow. I'll never know if the miscarriage was caused by what they think is lupus or Sjögren's syndrome.

It's worth seeing if there are any issue like that in the family even if it rules that out as an issue

I've had recurrent miscarriage testing but I've had 5 - they tend to do lots of different blood clotting ones (including lupus), thyroid and maybe vitamin D

To be honest mine all came back fine and it felt like they were just going through the motions of testing (this with a supposed specialist) - they didn't test for progesterone levels or NK cells (have to go private for NK)

Send you away with a call when you get pregnant next and we'll scan you at 6 weeks by which time it's usually too late to do anything

@Kayjay2018 it's awful to go through a miscarriage isnt it. So will you be trying again depending on the appointment you have?
My partner have an auto immunedeficiency.

Within both families their has never been a problem with carrying a child no known miscarriages he only has a sister and she has 4 children. All my siblings have children to. My sisters son is having a child now also.

@itwasalovelydreamwhileitlasted im sorry to hear you have been through this 5 times. Do you feel you gained nothing from the testing?

I was on the depo injection which if I have researched correctly has progesterone in. I was on this for 6 years without breaks. I have always thought it will cause problems but at the time I have broke from my ex I never wanted to have a boyfriend nevermind another child. But I do regret going on that now.

I even have this idea I can not carry boys. All my children are girls and my partner is from a male dominated family, that gos back afew afew generations and he has a son. There is also only 3 boys which my sister had and my other siblings had girls to.

I'm probs over thinking it to find answers but like you said you have both said will never really know.

They said after the operation there was some placenta and tissue but I highly doubt they would have tested that.

I would recommend the book "miscarriage what every woman should know" by Lesley Regan. It's a bit heavy/technical in places but covers pretty much all the most common medical reasons.

@itwasalovelydreamwhileitlasted I agree that it felt like it was just something they had to do but had no interest in.
I was sent to see a specialist who told me what tests I would be having and then I never saw her again. The results were sent to me by letter from her secretary and it basically was just go away and keep trying. After 3 mmc (each needing surgical treatment) it's not as easy as just keep trying! There was no caring or talking about options or anything, almost wish I hadn't bothered as it was such a waste of time.
None of the pregnancies made it passed 6 weeks but I was told the same, we will scan you at 6 weeks. Well thanks!!
Thankfully I did manage to have a successful pregnancy but that was just luck!

@Guest1233
The only real thing I gained was a list of things that were confirmed as not being the issue. Every time I go back in with another mc I ask if there are additional tests - I'm told no just call when you next get a BFP 🤷‍♀️

I also have a history of ectopic pregnancies - even though I ruptured and nearly died last year and lost my left tube they refused to scan my remaining tube for blockages etc as they said it "looked fine" during surgery. Went on to have another ruptured ectopic a couple of months ago and had to have my last tube removed

I now go privately for IVF where at least they are open and willing to try different things - progesterone support, steroids for potential NK cells, blood thinners, DNA fragmentation testing on DH, scans to check for hydrosalpinx (when I had tubes)

@plixy that sounds horrible why do they treat people like that. I am glad you hear you had a successful pregnancy to.

@itwasalovelydreamwhileitlasted omg really I bet that was really difficult to go through. I am glad you are getting the support you deserve and my fingers crossed for you, good luck
