Pregnancy scan are they ever wrong?

Just been for an internal scan, the midwife said eventhough I should not say they because of how early you are. It does look like you will miscary soon.
She said she seen alot of blood behind baby. Baby was in a sack but could not see yolk. Then said but it could be there. The baby was too high up in the cervix too, and she was unable to see a heartbeat due to size.

Am I clutching at straws here?

I'm a sonographer. How many weeks are you? The yolk sac develops around 5/6 weeks first, then fetal pole by 6/7. The heartbeat should be seen very clearly from 6-8 weeks gestation.
If she saw a fetus then there should be a yolk sac - that is what feeds the baby until the placenta develops.
Was this an nhs scan or private?
A midwife shouldn't be doing and internal ultrasound unless she is an obstetric midwife sonographer. She should not be telling you you are likely to have a miscarriage until that time comes, there is no way of knowing that information until then.
The sac should be high up in your uterus. The sac shouldn't be in the cervix. The cervix is unable to be viewed on ultrasound anyway so there is no way she could have seen this.
Many women bleed or have blood in their uterus during pregnancy. If you are very early this could be implantation bleeding which causes a small bruise to your uterus wall.

I'm 10 weeks 5 days. NHS not sure if she was trained she disnt say just told me her name she had a different outfit on than others. The baby was tiny she said shes unable to see a heartbeat coz it was small. I could see the baby and cord? If that's the right word which looked like it was attached to grey (womb). She said she cant see a yolk but it could be up there ( meaning behind baby) she could see my scar from c section and she said this is bad scaring and all this is blood which is behind baby. Then this is why she said it looks like you will miscary. Oh really. She did say its high in your cervix, to which I said oh right it wont attach then.

I have never known of yolk and all this I have only ever known of a sac and baby.

I really think she was wrong to say what she did to you. I honestly would just keep positive and the first proper scan will be in a couple weeks, in the meantime go in if you have any bleeding. Better to be check than not.

I had a bleed at 6/7 weeks in my current pregnancy and they scanned me sometime in the 7th week and you could see baby with a heartbeat flickering away even though he was right at the top. So the presence of a baby is good, it's just whether he/she has a heartbeat.

Guest1233 · 21/08/2019 16:07

The baby was really clear like it had legs with a slight curve in the spine still. If you get me? I have been having bad pains since home though. I will keep positive though you never know the baby might be a little fighter.

I'm sorry this has happened OP.

Why were you having an internal scan at 10+ weeks?

Guest1233 · 21/08/2019 16:25

They said it would be an Internal scan so ne need for a full bladder. So I went to the toilet when I got there, she tried for an ultrasound and I explained what was said on the phone she said we can do an ultrasound from 9 weeks plus. I explained I had been to the toilet to. She still tried which ment pushing harder that what I remember from previous ultrasounds. She also said I was full of wind. Yes I have been for awhile. That's when she said when you are full of wind it makes everything dark. I was thinking that and coz my bladder isnt full!

Does the yolk have fluid in it? I first started with pink fluid when going to the toilet. This happened twice then Brown fluid/discharge. Would the yolk sac just come out as tissue in strips or a sac shape. Sorry for all these questions I'm just trying to understand the yolk sac. In the past all my scans have been from 12 weeks plus so never seen or of it

Why did you have a scan? Did you go to EPAU? Did they give you a follow up appointment for a week/10 days time?

Everyone is full of wind. The bowels are full of wind so ignore that comment please. She sounds like a buffoon to be honest and it doesn't sound like she did a very thorough scan. You have lots of information missing. Did you see a nurse after the scan?
Women come for ultrasounds in EPAU any time from 4+ weeks. The blood isn't behind the baby. It will be in your uterus. If there is a baby there will be a yolk sac! It isn't behind the baby, it's jsut in a different position and she should have positioned the probe differently to be able to view all areas of the sac.

The yolk sac is inside the gestation sac. I can't tell you how/what will come out as everyone is different.
I am sorry to say that if you are very sure of dates then there really would be a heartbeat seen at almost 11 weeks. Did the baby measure at 10 weeks or is that just from your dates?

Guest1233 · 21/08/2019 18:54

I went coz I have spotting they said for reassurance they would give me an internal scan. I have just lost loads of brown tissue. She didnt give me measurements just going off date of last scan. She wanted me to go back on the 30th for a rescan depending what happens in the mean time.
No nurse spoke to me.

Sorry I ment the dates I'm going off are from the first day of my last period

You need to ring your local Early pregnancy assessment unit because none of this is making sense. You shouldn't just go for an early pregnancy scan without any consultation from a nurse before and afterwards. You have lots of questions that you need someone to answer and it isn't fair for them to make you wait 9 days for that! Please ring your GP, midwife or EPAU.

Guest1233 · 21/08/2019 20:26

It was the early pregnancy unit, who seen me just no communication before or after.
Well she did explain what she seen but clearly not clear as she should have. I have never been to somewere like that before. I have had all my babies at another hospital but that closed its maternity unit many years ago.
I am bleeding now deep red blood with sharp tummy pains so I guessing this is the miscarriage.
Would I still need to have the other internal scan on the 30th? Would that be o make sure everything has passed?

TheWildAndTheCurious · 21/08/2019 20:31

You should have a debrief from a qualified nurse or midwife after a scan in EPAU to talk through the results & options available to you. The sonographer doesn't do this in any trust I've ever worked at. What hospital are you at if you don't mind me asking?

Yes you would need the scan on the 30th still. If your pains/bleeding gets worse or you start to feel ill over the next few hours please call 111 or go into a&e. Get lots of rest and keep your fluid intake up!

Mishappening · 21/08/2019 20:36

I am sorry to hear this. Please make sure you get proper medical input.

Guest1233 · 21/08/2019 20:37

Can you private message on here? I will send the name of the hospital that why. If that's ok?

@Mishappening thank you. I feel so confused. I went there due to my worries and now I feel more worried and confused. My partner bless him is still hopeful but I'm not due to the change in colour and amount I am losing.

OP posts:
EarringsandLipstick · 21/08/2019 22:20

I'm really sorry OP. It does sound like you are miscarrying and the difference in size of baby vs dates is probably due to a missed miscarriage.

I know it does sound as tho the person (sonographer?) you met today was not clear enough; but I'm going to gently suggest it was possibly that you have misunderstood what she was saying.

If your symptoms worsen, please go to A&E, eg very severe pain or heavy bleeding. In any case, go to your appointment for confirmation of a complete miscarriage, given your dates.

I'm very sorry. Take care of yourself 💐

Guest1233 · 22/08/2019 06:04

I'm unsure it all seems like a blur now. Not really passing much blood like my towel just has afew dots but wiping theres more on the tissue. I do have pains that have woke me up since 3am. Which where ever 30 mins to 45 mins. But now coming every few mins. Are they classed as bad pains? I have a fairly high pain threshold.

OP posts:
EarringsandLipstick · 22/08/2019 16:58

It's only blood loss that would lead you to need to go to A&E.

The pains are part of the process of miscarriage - it's your cervix dilating, like in labour. Take paracetamol for the pain.

It seems a little unusual not to have more blood loss with pains like that - please do follow up with a medical check-up.

Sorry this is happening.

Guest1233 · 23/08/2019 07:44

Hello yes I did. Had to have an op as some tissue and placenta was stuck.

Feel much better now though but it has been so difficult to deal with
