Trying for a baby after a missed miscarriage with a small amount of retaining pregnancy

Hi, this will be a couple of questions in one so if anyone could please help I’d really appreciate it ❤️

On Wednesday 10th July I went for my scan at 10.5 weeks and found out I’d had a mmc and our baby had died the week before I was absolutely heartbroken as this was my first pregnancy (planned with my partner for 4 years) and eventhough we managed to get pregnant within the first month I was devastated. On Saturday 13th July I had the pills inserted to onset the miscarriage and stayed overnight where I passed the baby, and then went on to pass the placenta 3 days later and haven’t had much bleeding since then and absolutely nothing these past few days.

I had my follow up scan on Thursday 25th where I was told I still had a tiny bit of remaining pregnancy tissue (they said between 4-8mm and considering I was measuring 27mm they said they were confident that this remaining would come out in my next period since it’s only a tiny amount). We are 100% ready to start trying again so please no comments on being ready etc as we are.

My questions are:

  • When will I start my period again? It says 4-6 weeks but when do I count that from? The day I had the tablets inserted or the day I passed the placenta?
  • If I got pregnant before my first period, would the baby be affected since I’ve got this tiny bit of retaining pregnancy? They said it’ll come out in my next period but what if I got pregnant before that, would it be harmful?

Thank you for reading this super long thread, any help will be very appreciated ❤️

Hi, I've had 3 missed miscarriages so understand how keen you are to start trying again but I would wait until you have passed what's left. Any left pregnancy tissue could potentially cause an infection if left in you too long. Such a small amount should pass on it own with next period and so not cause you any problems, however if you get pregnant and don't have a period this would end up staying in you for next 9 months. This could cause an infection which wouldn't be good for you or baby. I wouldn't risk it.
The 4-6 weeks starts from when your body no longer thinks it's pregnant, so I would say this is from when you passed the placenta.

Absolutely too dangerous to try before passing the rest of this pregnancy due to infection - would most likely cause another miscarriage so not worth risking it?

I have had several MMC - I count the day I pass the gestational sac as cycle day 1 and usually get cycle back in 4-6 weeks - I would wait until you ovulate after this next cycle before ttc so you know lining thickness etc will have recovered

Thankyou! I will definitely use protection until my period then - just hope it comes soon it’s such an agonising wait especially when it feels like everyone around me is announcing their pregnancies! ❤️

@Chlosavxox very sorry for your loss! I could have written your OP, we found out the baby had died at the 10 week scan (baby was 9 weeks). Only difference is that I had a D&C and not medical management.

I was scanned 2 weeks after to check for retained products and they said I had a small clot left and that it would come out with my period. I ovulated 2 weeks later and really wanted to try again so went for another scan (I had been spotting and was hoping the clot was out), but it was still there. The OBGYN said to not try that cycle, and to wait for the clot to come out. Infection risk is too high and just not worth it!

Unfortunately my clot never came out with the period and I had to have another light suction/d&c one week ago, but I wasn't invasive and we have the green light to start again in a week 😄

You will get there x

Hey SunStruck - do you think it’s worth me trying to get another scan after my period then to see if it’s came out? I just couldn’t think of anything worse than getting pregnant after my period and then something terrible happening because of the retained product! 😩

@Chlosavxox definitely worth it IMO. I live in a country where we all have private healthcare though so it's cheap, I know it might not be the same in the UK. But for peace of mind I would! You want the Dr's green light to try again, and then they can also have a look at your lining etc.

I'm a member of another thread with ladies TTC after miscarriage, and a lot of them had chemical pregnancies straight after and they think this could be the reason (trying to soon after, and not knowing if they have any products retained as this could make a difference). If this happens you'd have to wait even longer to start again so not worth it!

Sorry to hear about your mmc :(
Iv now had two mc. I no the feeling of being desperate to try again. And it feels like forever :(
I would 100% recommend having a period first before you try again. Just to get all the old pregnancy out. You wouldn't want to risk an infection with a new pregnancy and it Would probably be worth taking a test also just to make sure it's negative.
I found my periods are all over the place since my miscarriage so I used ovulation tests for the second pregnancy which worked first time as I struggled to figure out when I was ovulating and was getting really upset that I wasn't conceiving but it was just that I was ovulating really late.
Good luck xx

Thankyou so much for all your support ❤️ The wait is agonising but it’s defiantly worth it to get rid of the retaining product, fingers crossed it just comes out in my period so it’s all over and done soon! :)
