Late "early" miscarriage - does anyone have experience/knowledge?

Hi all, I had a miscarriage a couple of weeks ago, MMC discovered at the 12 week scan, baby stopped developing at 11 weeks 1 day. Prior to the surgical management the sonographer did another scan and confirmed that as far as she could tell everything looked "normal". They will send the "product of conception" off for tests to determine whether it was a molar pregnancy but from what I've read I doubt that was the case and they won't test for anything else.

I've obviously been desperately trying to figure out what went wrong so that I can do anything necessary to prevent it from happening again. I keep being given the figure that 25% of pregancies miscarry in the first 12 weeks however I understand that once the pregnancy reaches 11 weeks the risk drops to 2-2.5% so I am struggling to believe that it was just "random", especially since the foetus looked so normal on the scan.

Does anyone have any idea of what could cause a miscarriage at this stage? I understand a chromosomal problem is a possibility but haven't found any research giving % probability of a chromosomal issue being the cause a the miscarriage X weeks.

Is it worth trying to pursuade the NHS to test me for blood clotting problems? Or going private for tests? Or asking them to have a look at my cervix? I haven't been offered a follow up at the EPU so guessing it will all have to be through the GP.

Any knowledge/advice or recommended reading (books or research papers) would be appreciated.

Thanks you.

I am so sorry for your loss. I also lost my first baby at the 12 week scan, hb stopped at 9 weeks. Baby looked fine on the scan, just a bit small. Like you, I thought the chance of miscarriage at that stage was really low (and the chance of it being a partial molar pregnancy even lower). However, it was in fact a partial molar and I couldn't believe how bad my luck must be to be in the less than 1% of women who go through it. I'm fine now, but I just wanted to tell you that I think the statistics aren't correct - I know a lot of women who have had an mmc after 10 weeks. It's still most likely to be a chromosomal issue before 12 weeks, no matter how far along it is. And unfortunately nothing can be done to prevent that from happening, which can be very hard to accept (I know). I will never believe statistics again and never have hope until the next baby is safe in my arms.

Thank you for sharing your experience sadtoday21. I'm really sorry you've been through it too, it's horrible. It's interesting (sorry, I know that sounds cold) that yours did turn out to be a partial molar pregnancy. Fingers crossed for us both in the future Flowers
