Missed miscarriage

Hello, I've had a miscarriage at 10 weeks. It's so hard and horrible. I've just had a scan to confirm if everything has passed but still have a small 2cm piece that needs to come out. I'm waiting to pass it naturally as I'm still bleeding. Just wondering if anyone has looked into the possibility of low or not so great progesterone can be to blame? I've heard it can play a big part and I found out today that mine was 27.9 at 7 weeks. I am shocked and angry that they haven't picked this up earlier as my babies (twins) would still be here in my belly!! I was told that you can actually get some progesterone tablets or injections if the levels aren't right during pregnancy!

Sadly the NHS aren’t approved to prescribe it it is very frustrating because it is so cheap and Tommy’s Miscarriage trust have just issued a piece of research proving it can save SOME failing pregnancies.

I have had three miscarriages. The NHS consultant at the recurrent miscarriage clinic told me they will only follow the guidelines of this document ESHRE miscarriage guideline (google it) but it basically tells you everything NHS will and won’t do for you - probably due to funding.

I went to see a private consultant and she happily prescribed me progesterone but only after I was a patient under her and had paid almost £2000 in testing. With progesterone my last pregnancy made it to 12 weeks but sadly I miscarried and the baby had stopped growing at 8 weeks so they seem to think the progesterone delayed my miscarriage for 4 weeks!!

It’s hit and miss really. Sometimes sadly a pregnancy is destined to miscarry from the start and in some it can help.

Given you have just miscarried twins and your progesterone was that low I would scream blue murder for Cyclogest as soon as you get your next bfp.

Good luck and take care of yourself x

@Holly19 thanks for your in depth response, it's very helpful! I've heard of progesterone can help before Tommy's research and it reminded me yesterday when I've read their study. It's sad that due to NHS funds being limited it's a very reactive service. Have you had Cyclogest before?
I wish you good luck as well!

Sorry for your loss OP
I'm the same as previous poster - 4 miscarriages. This last one (last month) even though it was a naturally conceived BFP my IVF clinic (I had a failed cycle in March and was due to do a transfer this month) prescribed me progesterone and it didn't make a difference so I really think it's only in specific situations that taking it can help. Please try not to get worked up about what might have helped - I did and the disappointment was even more crushing this time around as we had all this extra help (blood thinners and steroids as well as progesterone) and it didn't make a difference x

@itwasalovelydreamwhileitlasted sorry I've only just seen this. I'm sorry for your loss! You are right, we can search for the why's forever but it won't make a difference. I've read a quote which really helped me "You can answer all your questions but be careful once you've learn the answers you can never unlearn them"
Onwards and upwards my ladies, magic does exist! Smile

@baby that's a really really good saying and I wish I'd read that before my last pregnancy. I googled myself into the worst anxiety of my life. Everything ended up fine.

Fwiw I had two miscarriages before DD and no reason was ever found. I was lucky enough to take part in the Tommy's trial for progesterone but sadly didn't get pregnant while the trial lasted, so no luck to me personally.

I'm really sorry for your loss. It's such an awful time and really, unless you've been there, it's hard to describe the hurt.

The consultant I spoke to said it's often chromosome problems sadly which can't be helped but that doesn't really make the actual situation any better.

@Starlive23 it's really good isn't it? We all have the tendency to google everything and worry about nothing. I think with the next one I'm going to ban myself from google and will just try to relax. I'm now just waiting for the bleeding to stop (well it's more just brown spotting really). I've done a test yesterday but it still shows positive but ever so slightly.
My heart goes out to you too! There are no words that can make us feel better about what has happened but I know that time will help and things will get better! X
