2nd loss at 5-6 weeks - anyone had tissue tested?

Firstly sorry everyone for their losses. Who knew this pregnancy lark could be so damn hard!?

This week I experienced a second early miscarriage at six weeks, in just two months - first one at 5 weeks (2nd Jan).

Nothing seen in internal scan other than thickened lining, suffered period like pain and bleed. Drs on both occasions confirmed it was a PUL then early miscarriage following low hormone and progesterone in blood tests.

Yesterday, I appear to have passed in my sanitary towel, a pink matter no bigger than a grain of rice, solid/rubbery (sorry if that’s TMI) - I cannot find any information whatsoever and being Sunday, no surgeries open to call. Could this be the embryo?

I’m deeply saddened and confused - I understand the risk of miscarriage is pretty great in the first trimester but can’t help think that two in a row might be more than bad luck. I understand NHS don’t investigate until a 3rd miscarriage happens but I’m not sure I want to go through it if there’s a chance I don’t have to.

I’m 34 years old, no children. Scans apparently showed normal looking uterus, cervix etc but I’m wondering if it’s worth hormones, thyroids being checked etc and is there anywhere that would test the embryo (what I think is an embryo anyhow)?

Hugs and prayers to all - hoping we all get our little bundles of joy very soon xxx

Hi wwicked85,

I am sorry you've had to go through this. I just had my third miscarriage last week via medical management as it was a delayed miscarriage so my baby diedbat six weeks and I found out at nine weeks at a private scan (I kind of knew something wasn't right.) So the memories are still pretty fresh in terms of what I had passed. It was fairly long and it was grey ish.. definitely looked different to my blood clots that I had passed earlier on. Did you retain everything you had passed or do you have early pregnancy units nearby? My EPU would test what I've retained but as long as you've kept it in a container of some sort and keep it cool then it should not deteriorate.. they were willing to test on my first and second embryo but I didn't manage to retain the embryo but I did this time. I am referred to the recurrent miscarriage clinic now and won't see them till near the end of July. Hugs to you Flowers

Also, I was told that I won't find out the results of the testing of the embryo until my appointment.

So sorry to hear of your experience too - interesting the EPU would do the tests. I will call them tomorrow. I wouldn’t say it was very long and grey - more pink, solid/rubbery mass no bigger than a grain of rice. I miscarried at home after they told me I had likely already passed it when I first started to bleed at the hospital (obviously that wasn’t the case). Now you’re being checked out hopefully they’ll be able to pin point any issues and help you onto a healthy full termer- lots of positive stories out there of people in our situation so I’m sure our time will come. Big hug and do keep me posted xxx

And I’ve retained what I think is the embryo and keeping it cool. I thought it would freak me out but for some reason I feel a bit relieved to know it wasnt just absorbed in my body as some drs have suggested and that it did actually exist. Am I weird for thinking this way?

Mochiface · 26/02/2019 14:39

Hi Lindyloolou,

I'm assuming you are wwicked85. Did you manage to get in touch with your EPU and did they offer to test? Yeah, I was surprised and I thought I was being weird wanting to catch and test tbh, but apparently it's okay to do so. No, not weird at all.. i found with my first two miscarriages, it was a struggle because I never saw the pregnancy anywhere apart from having my hormone levels monitored.. and it was hard because at times, I was thinking did they even exist, am I just in crazy town? Yeah, hopefully I'll have some answers, not sure what I would want to hear.. my biggest fear would be that I'll never get to have children after they've checked.

Hi sorry been a bit up and down these past couple of weeks. They wouldn’t test. Brushed me off as ‘it has ONLY been two miscarriages’. A week later I get a call from the same hospital who confirmed my miscarriage asking for my preferred dates for my antenatal appointments?!? I’m a huge fan of the NHS but on this occasion, never have I felt so let down, helpless and sad to be completely honest. So I have taken matters into my own hands and have booked a private appointment at The Lister Clinic for tests. I don’t think I can go through a third pregnancy without having tried to decipher whether something is up with me first. 2 losses in 2 months has really taken its toll so I’m concentrating on getting myself together, avoiding pregnancy for a couple of months and keeping healthy whilst going through the motions/tests etc. I’m sure we will all eventually have a healthy pregnancy, just some of us have to work a little harder than others sadly - but we will appreciate the little humans a hell of a lot more. Thoughts are with you 🤞xx

@Lindyloolou and @Mochiface really sorry for your losses and all that you are going through during this terrible time. I apologize for jumping on your thread like this, but just wondering if with your first mc the NHS tested the results? My situation is slightly different, as I had a D&C for mmc at 12 weeks, but they just told me they tested the "tissue" and the results were abnormal. Do you know what routine testing the NHS does on this kind of thing - it is only for molar pregnancies? I am certain I will go back on Wednesday and they will tell me it's a partial molar. Sorry, I know it's a different situation but I am desperate for answers about NHS testing and it doesn't sound like they do more than the "routine" molar testing after only one mc.

Hi really sorry to hear of your loss. I had a ‘natural’ miscarriage and so they didn’t do any tests on both occasions. The second where I passed the embryo at home was over the weekend so couldn’t test anything I’d retrieved by the time Monday arrived. They did say they would only be able to say whether it was the tissue of the embryo or not - no further tests would be done. Secondly, unless you have three recurrants, they won’t do anything - mortifying! I’m paying for private testing to rule out any underlying issues... told me 85% of miscarriages are apparently an embryo issue whether chromosomal issue (very likely when you think about the merging of two lots of chromosomes etc), poor egg/sperm quality... 15% environmental as in uturus, hormones etc. We have since realised that my DH has a vericocele which, whilst conceiving isn’t been affected in our case, there is a link to dna fragmentation in the sperm so we are having tests for this privately. I guess we all forget it takes two to tango! If you have had the one miscarriage, your chances of a healthy pregnancy next time is still very high - always easier said eh?! Good luck x
