Anyone had a failed MVA?

Hi,
I went in for surgical management of a MMC today, but they weren’t able to complete it. They removed some but weren’t able to get the sac itself. They tried twice then had to stop.

They offered to book me in to repeat it under general anaesthetic, wait and see, or have misoprostal for tomorrow morning if nothing has happened by then. I’ve gone for this last option.

Has anyone had a similar experience? Apparently it’s very unusual for it to fail (very experienced senior consultant and I’m the first it’s ever happened with for her).
What happened next with you?!

Sorry to hear about your MMC Flowers

I had an ERPC (under general) which failed - although they didn’t realise at the time it had failed as the sac came away, it was a bit of placenta which was left.

I didn’t want to go for the expectant management they suggested as it had been dragging on for ages by then. I requested surgery and the Consultant said they wouldn’t do a second ‘blind’ procedure so would use either a camera (which I think is normally used for removing fibroids) or some kind of ultrasound guidance.

I had the repeat ERPC (again under general) which the Consultant did with the camera in the end. This was semi-successful, although they couldn’t get all the tissue without perforating my womb. My Hcg levels were still high afterwards but dropped after 3-4 weeks and my period started a few days after that.

All the best, it really isn’t fun Sad

Hi Violindilemma, thank you very much for taking the time to reply. I wondered how they’d make sure that it would all come away if they repeat it, that makes sense that they’d use a camera.

I’m so sorry to hear you went through that experience. And to end up with damage as well. Not nice at all. Today was pretty grim, so I would have chosen a general for next time even if they’d given me the choice (which they haven’t). We’ll see what happens with the tablets I guess. I’m not having any bleeding really now so my womb is obviously holding on tightly to that last bit!

Thank you again for replying.

Yep, but then I had loads of problems with my miscarriages. None started spontaneously, all picked up on other scans, failed medical management, failed MVA, failed 8 weeks of watchful waiting, and each one ended up needed hysteroscopic removal (which we were trying to avoid as my miscarriages were originally caused by Asherman’s syndrome - there’s obviously something funny about how embryos implant in my endometrium).

Oh and my MVAs were all done under ultrasound guidance - that wasn’t the issue, they could see the sac but it just wouldn’t come away and they didn’t want to be too aggressive given my history.

Gosh, Sashkin, that sounds very difficult for you.

I ended up with a haemorrhage after the medical management, once that was sorted I thought it was all over. Unfortunately I had another two episodes of passing more tissue and blood clots which I then found quite frightening - went back for a check and they said there was still more. Offered to repeat MVA or do hysteroscopy under GA but said there was so little left that they recommended another go with misoprostal. Also said I had an infection started, which really kicked in yesterday. They’d started me on antibiotics on Monday evening though so I do feel a lot better today and very hopeful that it’s all finished with now.

It’s been grim and I feel so bad for anyone else who has been through similar! I also seem I have a very tender cervix now which meant I literally couldn’t let them do a proper vaginal exam with the speculum, so I’m hoping that will settle down soon..!

Thanks for your replies.

Hello with my second mmc I opted for a erpc as it was very close to Christmas I had general and woke up in recovery bleeding thinking it was all over but my consultant some hours later informed me he had punctured my womb and was unable to complete the procedure. I had to face Christmas still pregnant knowing the baby had stopped growing I then had the medical management once my epu was open again it was awful I lost alot of blood and the clots were massive I was pretty traumatised by the whole thing. I'm pregnant again but sadly I think I may be having another mmc 😔 big hugs hun it's a terrible thing to go through x
