Side-effects post miscarriage (Warning: TMI)

After my 12 week scan last Wednesday, we were told that I had had an incomplete miscarriage. We were totally devasted (first pregnancy) and I decided to manage it medically, which was horrible, but made it more real.

Emotionally, I'm all over the place, but I'm now starting to worry about the physical side of things too. I've been bleeding since Wednesday, which the GP says is totally normal, but then this afternoon I felt a really large black clot just fall out. It was totally unexpected and thre was no warning. It felt just like the actual miscarriage, but without the cramping and pain. Is this normal? I suppose it's good that my body is clearing everything out, but I'm worried about how much more stuff is still left in my uterus. I'm a secondary teacher and the idea of going back to school and having the same thing happen again is absolutely terrifying.

Has anyone had anything similar?

Hi, so sorry you are going through this, it’s not easy on so many different levels.

I had a mc in September, was told at scan that there was no heartbeat and had a natural mc. My EPU were really good with me and offered a follow on scan after the heavy bleeding had stopped. Can you call your EPU at ask for one? The scan was really helpful as although they said my mc was complete they could see a larger clot still waiting. They said it would pass on it’s own and mostl likely during my first period which was the case as during the night of my first period post mc I got woken up by it and had to run to the toilet and it popped out. It’s amazing what they can tell from a scan so I would ask for one, think I had mine about 10 days after my mc.

You are not even a week post mc yet so everything will no doubt be very raw emotionally and physically and you will need time. I had three and a half weeks signed off work as felt physically drained for about a week and a half and emotionally I wasn’t fit for work for longer. I still have bad days but things get easier. Can you get signed off for a couple of weeks if that would help?

Take care x

Thank you so much, this has definitely helped me to stop panicking! A scan sounds like a really good idea. There's so much I didn't know about miscarriage and it's hard to cope with both the gory bodily details as well as the crushing sense of emotional loss. Everyone has been so kind, but there's never a moment when you can just add 'btw, there's still loads of stuff popping out of me, am I going to be ok?' Your message has really helped.

I'm fortunate as work have been brilliant; I'm signed off till next Thursday and they said I can have longer if I need it.

I'm so sorry this happened to you too - be kind to yourself xx

Hi- just to say I am currently going through it and large fleshy type (sorry tmi) stuff keeps plopping out. It’s really horrible but I believe completely normal. I am going to be scanned in two weeks to check everything is gone. Big hugs x
