When to try again after miscarriage?

I had a missed miscarriage at almost 12 weeks, which started last October and completed in January. It felt like forever at the time, but my husband and I adjusted to it all, and the EPAU staff were all amazing!

Since then I've had some tests done and found I have elevated thyroid antibodies (thyroid autoimmune disease - hashimoto's) and very low vitamin d levels.

Both of these might have contributed to the miscarriage, or it might just have been one of those things. Either way, I've been actively trying to get myself in the best of health to start trying again, and am feeling much better! I'm just not sure when to start trying again as I'm so scared of going through another drawn out miscarriage, but I don't want to leave it longer than we need to either.

Has anyone else had a similar experience? How do you know when it's the right time? Do you just know?

Hi, so sorry for your loss, it’s horrible isnt it?
I went to my 12 week scan and found the baby had died days before, after a private scan we had. Was absolutely awful, especially as i thought everything was ok...i dont know why my baby died, and might never know. I find that hard to bear and also worry about future pregnancies and how im going to cope with the anxiety...
I think we have decided to try again after 1 period ( sorry if tmi..i. e a good clear out again and go from there) if we want another child, we’re just going to have to keep going. But my immediate thought in the hospital was never again...i have come round to the idea now and want to get back to normal although the idea of being pregnant again makes me feel a bit sick...
it’s so difficult, and only you will know when is the right time.
I would go after the medical side of things to give you a bit of reassurance for future pregnancies xx good luck xx

Sorry for late replies, I was travelling and then poorly Blush
I'm sorry for your loss @Ithinkthatsenough It feels so cruel that we never know what's happened or exactly why, but I guess sometimes we just can't get the answers we need. And I know exactly what you mean about the thought of being pregnant again.
I think you're right, that we'll just know, and so if I'm not feeling ready yet then I probably need a little longer. I truly hope you feel ready again soon, and enjoy your future pregnancy(ies). Fingers crossed for you, and best wishes x

So sorry for your losses everyone Sad
I lost a baby at 13 weeks, almost 2 years ago now. All looked perfect, just stopped growing a day or so before.
I wanted to try straight away, was the grief talking but I'm glad we did as I got pregnant with my daughter.

There is hope at the end of this dark tunnel, and it does get easier in time Flowers

@Suji66 I'm so sorry to hear you've been going through this too.

My GP hasn't offered me any thyroid medication, just told me that it won't affect my fertility (not what the British medical journal says, but it would obviously be preferable news), and that one day my thyroid will just give up.
Like many others, my thyroid panel is 'normal' but I have lots of hypothyroid symptoms that got much worse since the pregnancy.

I'm researching changes to my diet which are recommended for those with hashimoto's (going gluten free, and focusing on gut healing) that are helping to ease the hypothyroid symptoms, and hopefully reverse the hashimoto's.

I'm also taking folate this time round, as the folic acid tablets make me REALLY ill, so guessing I can't convert the folic acid to folate (some people can't).

There's some information about thyroid medication, and specifically T4 only (levothyroxine) or T3 and T4 (desiccated thyroid) on the Thyroid UK site.
There's a lot of conflicting information about diet advice for hashimoto's, and each person has different dietary needs. If you're interested to know which resources I've been looking into please PM me.

Best of luck to you both, and I wish you a happy and healthy pregnancy soon.

It's always good to hear that things have worked out so beautifully, and that there's hope for all of us.
