4.5 weeks pregnant after recurrent miscarriage and spotting

bfairbairn · 10/05/2017 17:18

I have had two pregnancies in six months that have started failing at 4.5 weeks. The first was missed (not even a foetal pole found at 10 weeks). I found out I was pregnant a few days ago and yesterday the same pinkish cervical music has started, accompanied by mild cramping. Last time I spotted for ten days before a swift and fairly painless miscarriage. Is it over for this pregnancy? I cannot carry on doing this. I feel completely alone, desperate and confused! What is happening??

Sorry wasn't offered

TheGrumpySquirrel · 19/05/2017 17:46

@K8tieh123 sorry to be blunt here but there is no way I would go on holiday without having the surgery first (can you take sedation / Valium while they do a local anaesthetic - I assume this would be an epidural type thing?). I'm speaking from the position of being left to naturally miscarry my baby which was measuring 8 weeks, it took 3 days to complete and was physically traumatic including a hospital admission as tissue got stuck in the cervix, heavy bleeding and feeling sick and shaky. They might say it is only x cm but there is a lot of other stuff around it (mine was supposedly "only" a 2cm sac with 1.6cm embryo.. no there was a lot more than that). I started spotting a week ago (Friday), found out on sat morning that there was no heartbeat, I was supposed to be 10wks. I was meant to have surgery on Wednesday but the main part happened on Tuesday morning and completed by Wednesday night. Sorry for your loss x

@bfairbairn sorry to hear of your losses - hope that the private clinic can give you some answers Flowers

K8tieh123 · 19/05/2017 17:54

TheGrumbySquirrel thank you for your honesty think this is what I'm needing at the moment as partner wants me to do it all naturally so it doesn't risk any chances of quick conception next time, my worry is what will I face havin the op day before I go, bleeding, infection, pain?? And I may sound silly but maybe I might not have any syotoms or signs of passing and making it back in time, I'm currently having no bleeding or spotting and this has now been like that for a week today, thank you for words x

TheGrumpySquirrel · 19/05/2017 18:20

I haven't had the op so I can't speak for those who have. However I've heard that you stop bleeding quicker if you have the surgery as it removes everything. I'm still bleeding and have been told I'll bleed for another 2 weeks. Infection risk is the same natural or surgery. I wanted surgery as like you I wanted to try again asap unfortunately that option was taken away from me.

I can't tell you how quickly it will take for you to start miscarrying - for me it was just under 2 weeks from the embryo dying (8 weeks when it died, to 9+5 start of spotting, to 10+2 miscarriage completed).

TheGrumpySquirrel · 19/05/2017 18:21

I'm not sure about post op pain. I have very little pain but am bleeding like a heavy period. If they have to dilate your cervix in the surgery I imagine you could be in some pain afterwards but I'm not sure.

TheGrumpySquirrel · 19/05/2017 18:25

Much more risky travelling with an incomplete miscarriage IMO.. if you can't face the surgery can you cancel the holiday and claim on travel insurance?

bfairbairn · 19/05/2017 18:29

A D&C is the most simple of ops. You're under for about twenty minutes and just need to take it easy the next day. I had a termination in my early twenties (I got pregnant with a coil fitted and was not in the right place to be a Mum... you can imagine how this sits now I cannot seem to hold a pregnancy). I had virtually no bleeding after the surgery and went on holiday that week. The only thing is, you should avoid sex for a few weeks while you heal (although I have two friends who have got pregnant within a month of a D&C due miscarriage).

Ok thank you, It's the whole idea of being awake as unable to be put under, I can have two tablets before pain killers and apparently gas and air that's all I can have being so close to the holiday, regarding the travel insurance we booked holiday before being pregnant and intended to then get travel insurance which now I can't get, i am so sorry to hear about everyone else really is terrible time for everyone, please could I ask one other thing of advice, apparently when I had a scan they said they could see the sac and no baby, will I have passed the baby already? Sorry again if I sound thick just things I forgot to ask when being told the news xx

TheGrumpySquirrel · 19/05/2017 20:34

@K8tieh123 I don't know that sounds odd as they said you were measuring 7 weeks. It's possibly the embryo never developed properly. You would have noticed if you had already passed it. Best of luck.

K8tieh123 · 19/05/2017 20:42

Thank you TheGrumpySquirrel

usedtorun · 19/05/2017 21:58

@bfairbairn yeah I'm ok thank you. I've had this week off work and have just sat at home, watching trashy films, eating rubbish and just taking some me time. It sound maudlin, but it's been quite therapeutic, I'm very good at putting on a brave face and not really allowing myself to grieve, but this week I have taken a bit of time. Obviously still had to be in Mum mode when my DD has been around, but it's been a relief to send her to her childminders and then allow the day to myself.

I'm sorry you are feeling the worst and I really hope that you are wrong and everything is ok with that dear little bean. I wish you all the luck for Tuesday, you've waited a long time to see the EPU, I hope you are rewarded with good news.

@TheGrumpySquirrel sorry to hear what you've gone through Flowers

bfairbairn · 20/05/2017 05:07

@K8tieh123 Your body has probably absorbed the foetus. It's unlikely that it developed at all beyond implantation.

@bfairbairn ok thank you just wonder why I'm measuring at 7 plus weeks unless that's the sac... god knows, good luck to you all and take care

bfairbairn · 22/05/2017 15:07

Just to let you know that after a heavier bleed I went to hospital expecting the worst only to find a baby with a heartbeat. It measured 5w 2d which I thought sounded small but the nurse said that it was the perfect size for conception and nothing to worry about. Have another scan in two weeks. Totally shocked!

@bfairbairn omg so happy for you!! Really hope everything is smooth sailing from here x

mummabearfoyrbabybears · 23/05/2017 21:52

I had cervical erosion bought on by pregnancy hormones and had a lot of early bleeding in the early days. It was scary but I have four healthy children and no MC. Good luck to you OP

TheGrumpySquirrel · 23/05/2017 21:55

@bfairbairn how are you doing?

bfairbairn · 24/05/2017 05:35

Very much the same but pregnancy symptoms seem to be stronger. I am completely exhausted and unable to function properly which I guess is a good sign! Taking it one day at a time. Spotting continues to be brown cervical mucus which is scary. I just want it to stop!

OP posts:
TheGrumpySquirrel · 24/05/2017 06:40

That's a great sign - the stronger symptoms. Hope the brown stuff clears up. All the best x

bfairbairn · 06/06/2017 05:23

Anyone who comes across this post, I'm now 8w 3d with another strong heartbeat and bleeding has subsided. Still taking each day at a time. Goes to show you just cannot predict where spotting will go!

mellongoose · 06/06/2017 08:02

This is lovely. Wishing you all the best xxx

WithCheesePlease · 07/06/2017 21:48

Ah that's great news, glad it's going well so far! One day at a time.

bfairbairn · 29/08/2017 02:49

Again, anyone who is reading this post with spotting, I'm now 21 weeks pregnant with a baby boy 💙💙💙. Spotting is not the end of the road!
