Still spotting more than two weeks on

I had a miscarriage 16 days ago and was told to go back to the hospital if I was still bleeding after two weeks. I am not full-on bleeding, and I keep thinking it has stopped, as there's nothing there for the best part of a day, and then I get a tiny bit of spotting. A pregnancy test this morning showed a faint but definite positive.

I was really, really hoping this was over done with so that we could start to look to the future again. The thought of having to have an ERPC at this point is pretty upsetting. Is it worth giving it a couple more days? Or do I need to face facts and get another scan?

I'm sorry for your loss and that things are still ongoing. I think it is definitely worth ringing your EPU and seeing what they say. I had some retained products with my last miscarriage. I had serial blood tests and a couple of scans. It was just a small piece of tissue and on the second scan it had come away by itself so it doesn't definitely have to mean an ERPC.

Thanks, I'll give them a ring in the morning. It's reassuring to hear that it might yet clear on its own. I suppose I am just impatient to get it all over with and be that bit closer to being able to try again.

With my 2nd MC I had a piece of retained tissue visible on scan, I didn't want another ERPoC so as long I was well (no temp) they were happy to wait. It passed with my first period and I just had one more scan after to check all was clear.

It took me four weeks after miscarrying to get a negative test result, and spotting only stopped post ovulation for my second period.

Definitely seek some advice if you're worried I went to the docs for some reassurance. Look after yourself x

I called the EPU, but apparently they don't take self-referrals, so I need a GP referral, which is a pain. The person I spoke to on the phone didn't seem to think there was too much to be concerned about if it was just spotting, but I booked myself a GP appointment for this afternoon. I did have some thicker blood/clots yesterday, so it's probably as well to get checked out.

I was feeling a lot more positive last weekend, and had some of my energy levels back, but this week has been harder again. It's been three weeks now and I'm so impatient for my body to go back to normal!

keeponrunning85, can I ask what the last bit of material looked like when you passed it? Ie, could you tell that you had passed it, or did you just find out it was gone later when you had the scan?

I didn't notice it to be honest. When I went for a follow up scan they couldn't see the tissue anymore but there was some fluid around my cervix. They said it was likely in there and would come away with my next period. It was only a mm or 2 so very tiny.

How did you get on at the GP?

I'm still getting a positive test at the moment, so I imagine it would be a while before I get my natural period back, but it's good to know that a tiny bit of retained material wouldn't stop it from coming back eventually.

Well, it's been a week since the GP referred me and I've still not been contacted about a follow up scan! I haven't had any spotting for the last few days, so I was getting hopeful that I wouldn't need the scan, but I've just tested again and it's still fricking positive.

It's four weeks tomorrow since the miscarriage and I can't stand how long it's all taking. I just want my body to go back to normal!

So sorry to hear that Jane. Did you have scans through your EPU initially? I'd try ringing them directly first if I were you and explain that your GP has referred you. If that doesn't work try ringing your GP and asking to speak to a doctor, rather than booking another appointment. I hope things get sorted soon.

No, when I started bleeding, I was at work, so I went to the nearest hospital and had the emergency scan there. I'm trying to get the follow-up scan at my local EPU but when I rang them they said they don't take walk-ins and I needed a GP referral. With hindsight, I wish I'd just gone back to the other hospital near work, as I'd probably have had the scan by now!

Could you try ringing that hospital now?

I'm not sure whether they'd think it was justified now that I'm not bleeding any longer.

I'm sorely tempted, though, because I'm having an immensely frustrating time with the GP. I just rang up to chase my referral (the GP actually told me to do this if I hadn't heard by the end of the week), and the receptionist seemed really confused as to what I was asking her. She went away to check with the GP and then rang back and left me a voicemail confirming that the GP had referred me - er, thanks, but that doesn't really help answer when I'm going to actually get a scan!!

You are definitely justified if you are still testing positive 4 weeks down the line. With all my miscarriages I was told to do a test after 2 weeks and if it was still positive then to get in touch as I'd need another scan.

Aww, thanks for checking in. Yes, there has been progress, thank goodness. I couldn't stand waiting all that time for the booked scan so I did go back to the other hospital to try and get a walk-in. However, they did a urine test and it was finally a BFN!

I certainly timed it right, as I'd got a positive on a home test two days before. The last bit of retained material must have finally come away on its own.

I'm so relieved to have it all over and done with. Now I'm just waiting for my next period - hopefully it won't be too long.
