Miscarriage; Natural, medical or surgical?

I am currently going through my first miscarriage. So far I have experienced mild cramping and moderate bleeding. I am waiting for the pain to increase in order to pass the baby. U fortunately I am unsure as to how long this will take, I'm aware everyone is different. As this seems to be taking its time (started on thirsday evening, it now being monday) i'm now wondering about medical or surgical alternatives. I'm going back to see the Dr tommorow where I will query this but I just wondered about other people's experiences. Has anyone had a medical or surgical miscarriage? What did it involve? Would you recommend them or is it best to wait and let nature take its course? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Yoshirabbit- hope things work out well and you get slotted in quickly. Try not to worry about pain etc in the meantime - i know everyone's different but at 5 weeks it was just like a bad period for me, and even when I had a later m/c which was much more painful, it got worse over a few hours so I got warning iykwim.

Looby - I was told I could have an erpc under local anaesthetic if that would be a better option for you

Just an update. Today is the 5th day from first the first signs of my miscarriage. This evening the pain has increased and it looks like things are passing naturally. Not really sure what I'm looking for and don't really want to look! Still not feeling the need for pain relief though. Hoping I'll be able to opt for a medical procedure anyway to make sure everything has gone.

I'm sorry to read this. If everything comes out naturally you may not even need a d&c. I had 2 miscarriages (and several healthy DCs). The first was 8 weeks but looked like a tadpole so probably hadn't developed even to that point. After that one I felt a bit weepy (sudden hormone drop even if one is actually emotionally okay about it) but physically fine and went on to conceive again quickly. I had another MC several years later again 8 weeks which was more uncomfortable and I saw a small sac. With this one though the pain worsened as I had an infection and had to have an emergency D&C though I had one more child after that. I think you still
have a GA for D&C (I'm out of date) so you don't really want one if it's unnecessary. Thinking of you and hand holding, like all the other MNs who have been through this.

By the way, I had no pain with the first MC and no infection so that may be a good sign. Good luck tomorrow.

So I thought I'd write an update. Went to hospital to check blood levels and they had dropped. Had another scan to show sac had collapsed. Luckily Dr was there and said she was happy to allow me to have a procedure straight away rather than wait 2 weeks. I've therefore just had MVA (manual vacuum aspiration). This involved suction without anaesthetic. It was pretty painful but the pain died down after 10mins and there is now mild cramping. The actual procedure only lasted 10 mins. Pleased it is finally over and done with. Dr said I can begin trying again whenever I feel ready.

Glad you're feeling able to move forward and are physically feeling more comfortable yoshirabbit

I also had my surgery today under GA. Feeling groggy and have a mild period-like cramps but other than that, no scary symptoms. Also pleased that we can move forward once we get a BFN (not used to hoping for one of those!).

I wish anyone else faced with this decision the best of luck and reassurance that it is manageable. In terms of emotional recovery, I'll have to get back to you but feeling ok so far.

Hi OP, hi emvy,

Glad you're 'done' on the physical side at least. I found that really helped me in December. Please please rest for the next few days - it will help no end. If you can get signed off work for a bit, all the better. I went back to work after a few days and it was too soon.

💐💐

emvy · 07/03/2017 18:45

Thanks for the advice brio. I have been signed off for 2 weeks but asked them to write that if I felt up to it, I could go back sooner, allowing me some flexibility. I didn't want to be stuck at home if I felt well and just wanted to get back to normal but also didn't want to be going back too soon, like you say. Hopefully that will cover all angles!

Yoshirabbit · 07/03/2017 18:58

I'm pleased everything went well EMVY . A horrible time but it's onwards and upwards from here. I'm going to have a good rest for 4 weeks. Eat healthy and get my body back to normal. briolover thank you for the advice. I've taken tomorrow off and will.probably stay off the rest of the week. I'm. Looking g forward to getting back to normality but don't want to push my body too far.

Hi emvy, I lurked on the antenatal thread until my mmc last week, so was following your story. So sorry it wasn't better news but glad you've managed to have the surgery quickly and can start to move on.

Glad you also managed to get the treatment you needed without more waiting OP. You are very brave to have gone with an MVA.

I also had my surgery yesterday. Two back to back pregnancies and mmcs at 10 weeks have taken it out of me, I feel so grotty and out of shape, so I'm also going to have a healthy four weeks and we're going to book a relaxing holiday at the start of April.

I'm back to work today from home and then back in properly from next week. I didn't find being home alone after my last mc very good for me, and as I've been at home for 2.5 weeks due to my sch and heavy bleeding, I'm just so ready to be with people again and I miss my colleagues! I'm lucky in that I do 2-3 days at home a week anyway so I can balance it well if I need time out.

I hope that this is just a one off for you all and you are lucky again. I tracked ovulation after my first period post mc and got pregnant again straight away (after taking years to get pregnant the first time) so would definitely recommend trying again soon after, when you are ready.

emvy · 08/03/2017 08:39

Thank you tigerdog, I'm sorry you have had to go through this all twice consecutively, it must be so incredibly difficult. I'm not surprised you're feeling out of shape and like you need some normality back in your life, bless you. Booking a holiday and having a small break sounds like just what you need and I really hope that you're next pregnancy is more sticky! Enjoy your holiday! I have a plan to book a holiday abroad in August last minute if I'm not pregnant again by then. Small things to focus on that aren't baby related are the way forward I think, regardless of when we all fall again, if that's what we decide to do.

Hi Tortycat, yes I will be asking that very question when I speak with the hospital again. Thank you
