What was this large grey 'ball' I passed?

Apologies in advance this post may be bit rather disjointed, my head is all over the place.

Started bleeding on Thursday, scanned at EPAS on Friday and confirmed mmc. Sonographer said looked like embryo had died a few weeks earlier shortly after previous scan.

Had very heavy bleeding on Sun, gushing like a tap, kept soaking maternity pads within a few minutes and passed four or five clots the size of my whole hand. Went to A&E where the Dr said he thought I had something stuck in my cervix which was causing all the bleeding. Had constant horrendous cramps whilst they were preparing a room for me. Dr then manually removed everything stuck in my vagina and said my cervix was closed and that he thought I still had the worst to go. But took the 'contents' away and when he sluiced them through he said they found the sac which was about 6cmx4cm (I didn't see the sac, in hindsight I wish I'd asked to) and that should settle down to just light bleeding now.

Had fairly regular regular but manageable cramps yesterday (Mon) and then this morning (Tue) had really strong cramps again. When I went to the loo I passed a dense grey mass of tissue with some dark clots within it, was about the size and shape of a goose egg, about 8x4cm. I rang EPAS and the nurse said it sounded like the placenta but it didn't look like any of the images I have found when I searched. Do you think it could have been the sac and the A&E Dr was mistaken on Sun?

At my scan 3 weeks ago I was expecting to be a minimum of 9wks (due to when I found out was pregnant, still bf my DD so didn't have lmp to go on) but unsure of max weeks, hence scan. But sonographer dated it at 6 wks (with heartbeat) and EPAS scan also dated it at 6wks with no heartbeat, so not really sure on the dates.

Apologies for complete brain dump, just hoping someone can help me make a little sense of it all. Am the kind of person who likes to understand things properly and feel like I am so confused at the mo over something so important to me. Such a horrible time Sad

I am so so sorry you are going through this. It sounds horrific.
I experienced a miscarriage earlier this year and was lucky enough (I say that very lightly) to pass everything rather quickly and in one go. The EPU had dated the pregnancy at about 6 weeks (should have been much more) and what I passed was about the size of my palm, grey tissue with a small nub. Nothing else but clots after that. Could you speak to your doctor and explain what has happened since? It sounds like an awful lot of tissue to lose after the pregnancy, but then again I am no expert and only have my own experience to draw upon. I think in your shoes I would be just as worried.
Please be kind to yourself. You are in my thoughts x

I had something similar after my mmc at 14 weeks. I had him in hospital but the waters were 'frayed' apparently.

About 3 days later I got horrific cramps, went to the loo and a huge grey mass dropped out. They said it was just a bit of tissue. Still, not nice though.

I'm sorry you are going through this.

Thank you both for taking the time to reply. It's just such horrible place to be, one minute I'm absolutely fine and the next it's floods of tears. Hormones as much as anything I suppose.
I wish they'd given me more info when I left EPAS after the scan, the paperwork they gave me basically described it as like a heavy period. Utter bulllshit. It makes me feel patronised that so little info is provided, most that I found was through MN. And yet if you ask they tell it's all common, so why try and gloss over, we don't need patronising.

Have another scan in ten days to check all clear so will ask then, maybe they will be able to shed more light.

Thank you both once again Flowers

My DD had a similar experience. The hospital asked them to fish it out of the loo and take it in for them to look at. Not pleasant. She has gone on to have several other children normally, so please take heart.Flowers

Firstly, I'm so sorry you've had to go through this too Flowers

I had something similar after my mmc. I passed the sac with some pain and lots of bleeding which was confirmed with a scan the day after. Around a week (maybe a little less) later I got the familiar feeling of pressure and dashed to the loo to pass a small ish lump of grey/clotted material. It was pretty hard and I couldn't break it down with my fingers so I presume it was the last of the pregnancy tissue- it was definitely not just a clot or anything like the sac. I think because it was so long after things stopped developing that it had sort of shrunk and became totally incomparable to everything I googled.

Hope you are feeling back to normal soon (normal!! Hah!!)
