2nd miscarriage in 5 months - looking for answers.

I have had two miscarriages since May. First one at 5 1/2 weeks and the 2nd one (confirmed yesterday) at 7 1/2 weeks. For the first one I have no idea what went wrong, this time I managed to get an early scan at 7 weeks. A heartbeat was found, but the fetal pole was measuring way to small for 7 weeks (1mm). So I was prepared for the miscarriage to happen. And it did, spotting started Monday and yesterday I had a scan confirming it. Sad

My cycles are short @ 24-25 days. Since May I have tracked my ovulation, and this happens at 15-16 days. So the time from ovulation until the start of my period is very short. My doctor seems to think that's fine, as I have no problems falling pregnant (just retaining it). But I am wondering whether I could have a hormone imbalance, ie not producing enough progesterone? Could this be the reason for poor growth and ultimately miscarriages?

I have two children already. My son is 16 and my daughter is 16 months. I have had no pregnancies in between. Both miscarriages were after the birth of my daughter. I am 44 years old, so time is ticking for me. We really want another child.

Thanks for any advice & ideas (and hugs)

So sorry for your losses annanas. I'm afraid I can't answer your question about the possibility of hormone imbalance, but perhaps it's worth another chat with your GP if you're concerned? I've had two miscarriages in 6 months (one at 5 weeks, then a blighted ovum identified at 11 and a half weeks) and it seems cruel that two miscarriages isn't bad enough to start any investigations, but I suppose the rationale is understandable.

I really hope you've just been dreadfully unlucky rather than there being an underlying problem, and that next time you will have a smooth, healthy pregnancy. Take care of yourself Flowers

Sorry for your losses annanas. I would speak to your gp again and see if you can be referred to your local recurrent mc clinic/unit. The standard referral takes place after 2 mc but you may be referred now due to your age. Could you ask your gp to check your hormones despite them saying they're fine.... For peace of mind? Or Alteratively do you have any private medical insurance that you could use?

Your chances of a successful pregnancy next time outweigh the chances of another mc despite how hopeless it can feel.

You'd be welcome on the rmc thread where ladies might be able to suggest some other ideas.

Thanks for your responses. I have made a Dr appointment for next Wednesday, fingers crossed she agrees to refer me. I DO have private medical insurance, I had never thought about they would help with these 'kind of problems'? It's something to look at.

When I went to a&e Tuesday, they took 100s of blood samples. For 'hormone levels' they said. I asked for the results the following day, they gave me printouts....and there were just blood counts etc. Not what I expected. But maybe the hormone tests take a bit longer to complete? Anyway, not sure they would tell me anything about an imbalance or why I miscarried....

Back on the horse I suppose.....

I was I a similar situation, with two early mcs fairly close together, after having fallen pregnant easily with dc1 and dc2.

I was 38-39, and the midwife said it was nothing I had done, but very likely - given my age and history - simply ageing ovaries. 3rd time stuck and I went on to have dc3, but I also went on to start menopause a year or two later. So I guess the midwife was probably right.

Glad to hear the 3rd one stuck for you Smile It's encouraging to hear how many women have a successful pregnancy after two miscarriages. I hope I am going to be part of that statistic.

I am painfully aware of my age....had a perfect daughter age (just) 43 without any problems conceiving and a trouble free pregnancy and birth. So just felt I wasn't really 'old' at all yet. Hmm

I didn't feel 'old' either, and didn't like being told that, especially as my mum started meno in her late 50s.

Hope you get a sticky one soon Wink

3rd one stuck for me, although did have progesterone after bleeding around 7 weeks. Best wishes xx

There we go Smile another 3rd one lucky! I have got my ovu sticks ready. Just need the bleeding to stop and my pregnancy test to be negative (still + but fading....slowly)
