How long did you bleed for?

I have started many previous posts. I am having issues with retained products. I have been bleeding for 7 weeks now, had pessary for medical management last week and just so want to move on from this. I am going back for another rescan on Tuesday. I just want to move on from this and get back to normal.

Has anybody else experienced similar?

I haven't but 7 wks is a long time to bleed for.
Would your hospital do a surgical management of miscarriage to remove any remaining products.
I just had this and was scared as its a ga but in retrospect was the best thing as I had lost a lot of blood.
Look after yourself and push them to do what's right for you xxx

Is it proper blood or just spotting ? I didn't really stop bleeding after my op until after like my 2nd period maybe was v odd

Can you ask for an ERPC (surgical management of miscarriage) - I had one 3 days after finding out about mmc and only had minimal bleeding for a week after. I would push them to sort it out as you don't want to get an infection from the retained products ?

Hi Mostlyjustaluker I had retained products after giving birth in December last year. I do sympathize with you, I had bleeding for two weeks only though and was hoping to go for the medical management but the hospital recommended the ERPC as not a lot of tissue was being expelled. I was really scared about it. However I felt so much better after, not worried about bleeding anymore which with a small baby was really scary considering I had a massive hemorrhage over Xmas.
As I was really nervous about it I asked the doctors to g
explain the procedure in detail more than once and was reassured when they said it would have been scan guided as worried about any possible damage to the lining. The procedure was done in 15 minutes and I went home after 2hours and had only little blood for 10 days after.
It is a very personal decision, what made me go for ERPC was that I just wanted to regain my energy and look after baby without worrying about having to run to A&E.

It took two lots of pessaries for me and still it was incomplete. I had surgical evac nearly two weeks ago and am stills spotting. I was told with the medical that I would bleed a lot - a tena lady sized towel an hour plus clots and this would continue for 6-8 hours. They said that if I thought I hadn't bled as much as I should have, to go back. I did, and had a second lot of pessaries - I bled again but this time a lot, lot more. I went back after a week for a checkup scan and was still incomplete 6cm of tissue still left.

It was a horrific, painful and protracted experience and I wouldn't want to go through it again. The medical management was much easier to deal with for me - no pain and it was over with in half a day - with the medical I had 72 hours of intense pain.

If they offer you a second medical or the option of a surgical - please don't be scared for choosing the surgical option. You may, like me end up having it anyway.

Getting away from the gore - I am here with you. It's a horrible thing to go through and I just want to send you my sympathies xxx

I have been told that the amount of retained product is too small for surgery. I would have happily have opted for surgery at the very start of all this.

After speaking to a friend at work and listening to her recent experience it sounds as if my hospital are not doing a great job, eg lack of information, don't doing appropriate checks and long scan pics ect.

How far along are you? If the miscarriage has missed, then they have to offer a surgical alternative even if as in my case what is left is only 6cm. There is a risk of infection. Do you have an alternative centre you could go to? If you try again, try and change your care provider :(

I was only 6 weeks. Bleeding seemed to have slowed yesterday. I have decided if I am unhappy with outcome today I will make appointment at Gp to be referred to another epc. My epc is closing down at the end of May.

Did you have 'a lot' of bleeding for a few hours and then just a bit for the rest of the time? If you haven't had a proper bleed you may not have passed everything. I hope everything is ok at your appointment today. I will be thinking of you

Sorry for your loss, I had a missed miscarriage and medical management in dec 2010, had retained tissue which was only recognised after a scan as I was still bleeding and passing clots 4 weeks later, was given the option to wait it out or erpc by that point had enough of hospitals and decided to wait it out, finally passed it end of jan! Incidentally feel pregnant with my son straight away!

fruitlovingmonkey · 21/04/2015 11:32

Sorry to hear you are still bleeding and how terrible that you weren't given all of the options. I was and I chose medical management, but I still have light bleeding over 3 weeks later. Thankfully I haven't had any pain for over a week now. Tbh if I'd known how painful and traumatic it would be and how long it would drag on, I would've chosen surgery. I really hope I don't have to have eprc to finish it off though, having already done all this. Good luck for your scan.

AuntieDee · 21/04/2015 11:44

Fruitlovinonkey - that's exactly how I felt and ended up needing surgery anyway. If only they would give all the options fully and tell you just how bad it can be :(

fruitlovingmonkey · 23/04/2015 14:38

I agree Auntiedee, my doctor seemed surprised when I told her how long I bled for initially. I'm wondering if perhaps medical management isn't suitable past a certain number of weeks. I wouldn't choose it again although of course I hope none of us here ever have to make that decision again.

jassS · 23/04/2015 20:05

Demand the surgery. I it has lasted so long something is stuck and no amount of bleeding with med management will get it out. Some people just retain and need the surgery to get things over. Am one of them, never had any luck with natural or med mc, always needed a surgical (5 tomes or so).
